It's not a matter of it will leak but when. They have been using lines that leak for decades now, what's new is some of them blowing out completely and causing the engine to be damaged.

Another one.  2019 GMC AT4, 36k miles. Truck was idle all day, left my house in the afternoon and temp was 55 degree's in Arkansas.  Drove about 1 mile, engine was hardly warm.  At a stop light, it turned green and as soon as started to move...Boom no oil pressure, turn off truck.  I was on busy road but was in right lane and able to pull into driveway within 15-20 yards and 15 seconds.  Killed engine and got out and notice a bucket of oil from where I just on the road.  Another batch about the same amount was under my truck in the spot i just parked.   Towed to dealership.  Oil Cooler line busted.  waited 1.5 weeks and got the call today.   line replaced, oiled up and cleaned....engine is locked up.  inspection tomorrow to determine if rebuild or new engine.  Told it will determine how much damage is done.   I am shocked that the engine is damaged.  Stopped almost instantly and it was still dropping oil well after the engine was off.  

 

Now how long will this take?

You shut engine off? Now it's locked up? Out of warranty? Sounds like it was driven into the shop bay to work on it.

engine was shut off in under 30 seconds. Dealership told me it is locked up.  still well under the 5 year, 60k  powertrain warranty. 

 

Surely the mechanics wouldn't start it.  I know for sure the tow truck guy did not. He also suck a note on the window that truck was out of oil, do not start.  We did this because it was taken in on a sunday night when nonone was there.  

I also called first thing Monday to advise them and they told me they would  push it in.

 

Do i have any way to know if they started it?

I don't know how a regular person could tell if it was started. 

 

Will warranty cover the engine? One of those things I worry about. Yes the line is under warranty, but the engine isn't because it failed because of the line.

 

I would hope service didn't start it, but one would never know.

False.  Engine is covered because the line is covered.  The line is not only the source of failure, but also falls under powertrain warranty.  If the dealership tries to claim what you just said a lawyer somewhere will be having a very good day.

Yeah, I forgot the question mark at the end. I was wondering if the gm warranty was like some of those aftermarket parts... "We will warranty this sh!tty part, but when it fails and destroys your vehicle, we aren't responsible."

 

Fan belts come to mind.

Fortunately, the GM warranty doesn't have more holes in it than swiss cheese.  I use to work for a parts supplier to dealerships.  The Hyundai dealership I supplied described their warranty this way.  I had Chevy, Toyota, Honda, and Nissan dealers in the vicinity and they never described their warranty this way.

Mark me down for another failure. I was on my way home from work and got a code: "add engine oil". Thankfully I was close to my dealer, so I called and drove directly there. When I pulled into their lot, the truck was leaking oil pretty badly. The tech said the crimp had failed, but I was lucky because the hose hadn't blown off entirely. Thankfully, he has the parts in stock and is going to replace the lines today.

Was this the second failure on the same vehicle?? If so I don't get a warm and fuzzy feeling about the replacement hoses. Mine blew  (catastrophically) at 6K miles. Thankfully I was able to get engine shut down within 5-6 seconds of line blowing, but still dumped 5 of the 8 quarts of oil in that time. New line has been good.....so far

My 2019 5.3 with 88k miles was driving on I 80 in dangerous area 70 mph had a cel light on and all of a sudden no oil pressure started smoking shut off truck on highway in dangerous area .  engine is blown up crimp failure oil completely blew out.

Okay all..thank God for the internet. 2019 TrailBoss 28k miles. Left home, turned the corner…light flashing and no oil pressure. Pulled into parking lot and shut off truck. Oil everywhere on drivers side. 11 days earlier, warranty expired. 3yr/36k miles. Hopefully this is covered.

Had the crimp on hose fail couple weeks ago. They replaced the line and put oil in told me it was good started making noise and 2 Quarts low. took back to dealer they checked it said ok. Took to my Mechanic he said low oil pressure and rattling in bottom of engine. Took it back to dealer contacted GM they had them pull the oil pan and take pictures. The crank is bad. Gm wont cover said it wasnt the engine fault it was starved for oil. No ****** your line broke and you warrantied that. only had 46000 miles on it. and they wont replace the engine.

PS they are trying to blame it on a Turkey that hit the grill and cracked it a month before this. is the reason the line crimp failed.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
