School me on exhaust..

I'm thinking about doing something with the stock system on my 18' 5.3.. but, I'll be completely honest, this is my first truck and I know absolutely nothing about exhaust. I thinking I want a sound just barely above oem. I actually like the sound of the oem exhaust during a cold start, but wouldn't mind something just a tick above. Not looking for anything droning or obnoxious by any means. I'm thinking maybe just going with a muffler would be the most economical route given my situation? I've heard good things about Magnaflow and Flowmaster, but feel free to add any help/suggestions! :)

My truck is bone stock also, the chevy's are single in single out so drone should be minimal with just doing a muffler. I did a muffler on my previous tundra (dual in single out) and it was gawd awful on the hwy. I think I'll go with a mangaflow, I just want a little rumble, nothing crazy.

I have exhaust which I like the sound, but if you like the sound at start up, I would suggest the resonator delete. It will be cheap to have done. Plus, you can swap the muffler out later if it isn’t enough.

Exhaust systems are for sound only on our trucks only. Save $500 plus and spend $30 to cut the muffler off and you'll get your sound.

There is a little more meat on the bone than just sound. Not a lot. But not nothing. A well thought out system even without headers can get you 10 to 15hp. The flapper is a choke point and so is the stock muffler.  Again not radical horsepower but open intake open exhaust and a tune change the truck quite a bit with the right combination of quality parts.

I agree about getting  a little gain with a system. I  think a 7-10 hp gain is attainable with a quality cat back setup. Probably not enough to notice seat of the pants but to say you get nothing but sound is not true at all.

The stock muffler and resonator has way more restriction then any aftermarket setup. Let's not forget about the flapper. WTF

Simple . Air in , air out. If the air can exit easier, more power.   Duh

BTW  8000 miles after installing a Borla S Type catback system on my 2018 5.3 my gas mileage increased by over 1 mpg.

With a Range AFM Disabler. That mileage didn't just come out of thin air.

He was just asking for something with a little more than stock sound aka tick. After all it is his 1st truck and looking for something economical. I gave a simple solution drawing upon my own experience using a name brand cat back system vs a muffler delete. However, if you want to go and do a full blown exhaust system with headers and tune and such... then yes it will do some improvement whether it be MPG, power or torque. That would also include how you tune it, driving habits, weather, hills, etc... to make gains.

Oh, on my 14 crew cab 5.3 after 8,000 miles on the stock motor and exhaust I gained over a MPG. And also my 18 CC 5.3 has done the same thing. Could it be the motor is just breaking in or loosening up?

I'm sure that the motor breaking in helped some but I noticed difference within a week or so.

On my other 2018  5.3 that is 100% stock I saw less of a difference from brand new after the motor broke in .

On my 18 5.3 with a Gibson cat back with range device and I get 24 to 25 on highway. Sound sucks if range comes off and it goes into v4 mode.

Three years worth of records show my truck has increased fuel efficiency right at 5% per year and now sits at 100K miles. My last 36 tank moving average is over 30 mpg. As you now an average is the middle and as it is still rising my current tank over tank numbers are closer to 31 mpg. (I rarely drive in town).

She still has the complete factory exhaust. One thing I've noticed over decades of driving stock is that the factory systems take quite some time to get mellow.

Are we saying I can expect another 1-1.5 mpg if I change exhaust?
