Air filter, cabin filter, fuel induction service needed???

So I take my 2018 truck in to the stealership for an oil change.  It's got 19K miles on it.  Service consultant comes and tells me of "recommended" services for my truck. 

 

Fuel induction service for $129.  

Replace Cabin filter for $44.99

Replace Air filter for $37.99

 

$212 for BS services needed at 19K miles.  Ah...……   NO...   Looks like I may go back to doing my own oil changes.

That’s why I didn’t take mine in for their “free” oil changes. Always an up sell on services not needed. You would be amazed how many people go for it. I remember the the time I was in another dealership before I got my tahoe and there was this woman with 2 kids and they did the laundry list to her. She went for it and spent about 700 bucks on “recommended” service. Crazy

Can't really fault them for doing their job and trying to make a buck though. Sometimes they may be looking at the age over miles or where you live for some things. You'd be surprised what 19k miles on some filters look like.

 

Parts store filters for under $40 for both and 10 min of your time if you really wanted them done.

I agree, whether they do it or you, change the filters at 20000 miles.

 

They both get pretty dirty in that time span.

The "recommended" service interval in the manual for cabin filter is 22,500mi. or 2 years whichever is first.

$45 to have someone change the cabin filter is a deal.  That's one simple job GM engineered to be a total PIA.  Followed closely to the air filter.  And the battery.   Just saying.

That's how much mine was last week at the dealer; I wished I would have known it was that much before I told them to do it. It's not too bad to change, just remove the glove box with 4 screws. Anyway; ever since they changed it I can hear the fan blowing now and it is driving me crazy. Has anyone else changed the cabin filter and then heard the fan blowing afterward. I took the filter out it seems fine, nothing unusual about it.

So you would rather pay money than get a free oil change and just say "NO" when they ask you? Are you unable to say that? I get my free stuff (nothing better than free) rather than pay and take their recommended list for later to see if I want to do any of it or it is needed on my own. I certainly wouldn't bypass something free (especially something that costs $50+ dollars) just because they try and up sell me...

I routinely get extra free services or parts from the dealers as a side benefit of buying a vehicle and/or parts from them.  On my X3, I received brand-new cabin and engine air filters at no charge a year after buying it, and a new key for less than half the price of a new one (key with chip, reverse cut and integrated fob).  For the truck, they opened up the fan's squirrel cage to pull out a nut, gave me a brand new spare tire, a new rear tailgate camera, and new rear pads/rotors all at no cost to me.  I do all my own work, even body work, and they know that, but service with a smile works both ways.

You got to wonder about corners cut. If you don't see a new filter being installed did you get one?

Depending on where you live to me changing out the cabin filter once a year might be needed.  At least here in the eastern part of NC.  The yellow pine pollen in the spring can clog that thing up fast when you are driving through clouds of it blowing off the pine trees.  My 2002 had 14k miles on the cabin filter in just over 2 years and it was nasty.  Plus if you are like some and you don't drive much I have seen people change them out and found a nice nest on it from mice.

I do the oil changes myself. $7 filter and I buy the oil when the rebates are out and stock up. Cost me around 11 bucks for 5 qts after rebate. Whole process done in about 20. Just easier for me to do at home and I know it’s done and done correctly.

I agree with the point that the cabin filter needs changed, possibly before you might think.  I changed the cabin filter in my Equinox and it was much dirtier than I though it would be.  It was easy to change.  I will be changing mine every year.

 

Interesting was the YouTube video that I watched showing how to change it.  In the video, there are acorns on top of the filter.  Obviously critter intrusion.  But the worse part was that the person said if the nuts fall into the system, past the filter, good luck getting them out.  Again, a good reason to stay up on this maintenance item.

I'll never go back for my next "free oil change", after what I went through with my first one. First I called a dealer, they said...we don't have a quick lube, you'll have to make an appointmentment and right now we're two weeks out. No thanks. Then I called another, they said based on my mileage I didn't need one...umm, I'm not into going 7,500 mikes on oil changes, can I just get one now? Well I gues you can, but we're two weeks out. Really? Then I finally found one that was "only" two days out, so I went there...I sat Inc that waiting room for two hours. Two. Fell asleep on a sofa - woke up with the service writer apologizing that it took so long - won't be back, I'll never go back.

 

as for an induction cleaning at 19,000 miles??? Lmao! If your truck needs an induction "cleaning" at 19,000 miles, time to trade in the truck and never buy that brand again. Laughable. And let me tell you how they'd perform that induction cleaning...the Tech would through the bottle of "induction cleaning solution" in his bottom tool box drawer...boom, you got your induction cleaning! Would you like a brake fluid flush?? It's only $110 bucks, were having a sale. And that would consist of the tech opening the hood, maybe turkey basting your master cylinder, then spraying the master cylinder cap off with brake clean (just to make it look like they did something).

ok so as a tech for a gmc dealership the issue with the cabin filters on the 14-18 model trucks/yukons is they get alot of a debris in them from the vent on top of the dash having larger then normal vent holes. i have changed cabin filters at 7k due to lots of debris in the filter. i highly recommend to do it ever 10k on these vehicles. the air filter typically around 20k-25k. fuel induction service is recommended about every 15-30k. 

 

they arent trying to rip you off. its maintenance, you have the right to say no. you also can change the filters yourself. 

 

but for $212 isnt bad considering thats parts and labor. also the tech... or at least where i work gets 0.2 to change an air filter 0.4 for a cabin filter. and 0.9 to do an induction service. so that tech is only getting 1.5 for doing the work. and if its a lube tech on flat rate who makes $14-$16 per hour. he is only making $21-$24 to do it.

    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."    
    • Looking for advice from this group. Took my flawless 2020 6.2 TB to an unnamed shop for routine rear brakes and oil change. Tech forgot to put oil back in after the full service and needles to say, destroyed my engine.  It’s all on their shop video so they are responsible.   I had my Chevy dealer do the analysis and they confirmed its compromised and said engine replacement. The manager said they only get GM reman engines from GM with full 3 yr warranty and the one they would put in is not same as what’s they are swapping out on 21-25 for recall.    I am looking for advice why that would be a different engine because obviously I had the good 6.2 year and replacing it has my concerns with that recall for 21-15   Also what’s the pros and cons of accepting the engine swap vs telling the shop that bricked the truck to pay up so I buy a new truck. I’m concerned about stigma resale eventually if I just decide to get rid of it after the swap or other issues showing up after the swap out.  
    • Just looked up my records.  I've never gone over 5000 miles between oil changes.  At 46K miles, I have 10 oil changes.  I hope that will help.  I also installed the disabler last year.  I've still had a few times when it didn't seem to engage (which I can tell because the start stop feature kicks in), but for the most part, I think it's working.  For some reason, GM did not include the number of cylinders running in the information screen like I had on other models.  In my Cadillac, it shows me when it's running on 4 cylinders on the fuel milage screen.  I can't find that on my '21 Denali.
