The problem with slowing down the natural course of this virus is it’ll be back next year. Every one else in the world will lock down their boarders to keep us out. I vote we protect the sick, old and rock on. Like we did with H1-N1 and the flu every year. My elderly parents are more worried about the business they spent their lives building and the people who work for them. Than getting the bug. Their pretty good at self preservation.

Point, Set and Match

When you say 'and the people who work for them' the context isn't their life but their livelihood.

Now that we know the trade CAN be made the only thing left is the $$$$ figure

So, what is it? How much is life worth.

As far as break-in. If we keep the stick we measure with short enough it doesn't matter how you break it in. The OP asking the question tells a person he measures with a long stick. A million on a commercial diesel is a six inch ruler.

So I guess we can always go back to horses. If pita will let us. Driving is dangerous too. People can look up other pandemics to so what we did or didn’t do then. If you listen to what their saying is pretty much we will all get it eventually. Some will never know it. It would be easier to isolate the ones we need to. Than shut down everything. But of course the government can fix everything.[emoji106]

One thing the dealer most likely didn't do, is grease the front end.  You might want to take a grease gun with you, and grease the front end in the lot before driving off...

A persons beliefs are what they are.

So what explanation might you offer for the 25%+ increase in fuel usage between those two speeds?

Or the 40% difference between 70 mph and 85 mph?

I have not seen evidence that there is a 25% difference when the truck is unloaded.  Any difference there is, however, would mostly attributable to wind resistance, which is a real force, but not like the force imposed by the multi-thousand pounds the truck is rated to tow.

pretty sure most engines are run for awhile before being sold....even on my new mx bikes (high rpm engines) I wouldn't try to kill the engine but wouldn't baby it either....same as any new truck or vehicle

normal drive back to your house will be fine....brakes I can see but I don't imagine the types of guys who buy these trucks arent the types to do idiotic things anyway, lol

they are being sold to drive off the lot like a normal truck and warrantied as such....

should be no traffic. lol

Just food for thought but the average person drives the new vehicle they just purchased off the lot the same way they just drove in on their trade in.  The group of individuals on here is a very small percentage of what is out on the road.

I could do horse. :)

History is what tells us what happened. Nobody can tell us what will happen.

I’ll remind you next year when this hits us again. Otherwise have a good day.

Take the 2 lanes home, at least there is change of speeds.  I think the main concern for 500 miles is the rear gears running too hot the faster you go.  Bonus is the ride is a LOT more interesting on the 2 lane.

You ever try to move a sheet of plywood by hand in a 20 mph wind?

Would you like to try it in a 40 mph wind?

This is straight up physics. It's been studied to death.

The question was about the effect of speed on engine load.

Not on load imposed during a tow.

This is a break-in situation.

If you think an extra maybe 100 RPM heading down the road is going to impair your Duramax, feel free to drive 55.  I am not going to sweat it.

hey guys thanks for all the replies! I've been reading them throughout the day but definitely been one of those crazy busy work days!

I do think the varied speed is important for loading/unloading the engine in different manners. But given that I'll have 1000k+ miles of open road realistically I'm not going to be going from 15 to 55 and back down constantly for 500 miles haha. I will try to vary the speed randomly throughout the drive by slowing down and speeding up here an there.

I also agree that I'll get an oil change upon my return as I've always believed in an early oil change on any vehicle.

@Dunn - I would do similar things on my bikes, raced sport bikes for a few years when I was a little younger, not that I'm old now but still, younger. haha. We eventually did a lot of testing and would get great results breaking brand new 0 mile bikes in on a dyno. Controlled environment, can go as fast as you want, control the engine breaking, etc. an hour later you're good to go! These would then become full race bikes where you know they're getting pushed to their limits full time. Too each their own. However, bikes are different animals and each engine has their tolerances of what they like and don't like.

With that being said, I'm not going to go racing this thing down the highway haha but will try to vary the loading of the engine but not at any max's (no flooring it or slamming on the brakes etc).

I also enjoy photography so will bring the camera along and hope for some good scenery. That will force me to stop and vary the engine as well.

we were suppose to cycle the engine and all that but never did...….never had a problem either

you actually wanted some load to seat the piston/ rings I believe?,  was along time ago
