Is GM being honest to put a “4x4” sticker on 4wd single transfer case trucks?   Should they put a “AWD” sticker instead?

Not a serious issue.  Just having some fun on “Blue Monday.”

I thought the same when gm eliminated the floor shifter.?

Actually a fair question. But “AWD” wouldn’t really seem right either. The single speed transfer case is kinda in between the two, maybe?

I like having 4 low, although I admit I hardly use it and could probably live without it.

I did take a look at a ‘20 and realized that it was a single speed... transfer case. There is no room in my garage for a single sp transfer case... Agreed only needed once in a blue moon - i used mine last may to help guide a large tree to the ground.. i think usually when i use it is for control - like backing up to my trailer to creeping a tight turn with it.

My 2108 SLT is just fine... i think the de-content on the new trucks is there... you just have to study so you know what features you might miss.. i mean we all can’t afford a Denali...

I didn't even realize this was a thing until I had a Custom for a loaner.  As OnTheReel said, I wouldn't call it AWD either.  It's sort of the worst of both worlds IMHO?

I haven't used 4 low since my K5 in the 90s but I do plan on taking this off road a bit more in coming months, so it "might" get used.

Single speed transfer case is still 4wd.

AWD normally refers to a system that is always driving all 4 wheels.

And, for along time, even with the floor shifter for the transfer case, there was still the electric actuator on the front axle.

The shortest I've owned a car was for 4 hours because it didn't have 4x4.

2001 Isuzu Trooper. I was so mad, I had a 1991 then a 1995. 4x4 was standard. I made the mistake of walking in the dealership and pointed at the 2001 in the lot. I never drove it and assumed 4x4 was still standard.

It wasn't so I had to do the paperwork all over again since it was already a "used" vehicle and I lost a lot of money, but, hey, I had to have 4x4 on that ranch! My Cheyenne is an RST with a two-speed transfer case, I am glad I had it. When I got it brand new, I was stuck in a very awkward situation, a car parked inches away from my back bumper, the front tires were leaning against a curb and the front bumper was about two feet away from a brick fence. So glad I had 4L, I could get myself out of the mess that way.

It’s worse than that. They put well known 4WD stickers on trucks that are 2WD. My brother in law bought a Toyota that had all the 4WD stickers and badges but wasn’t. He made it clear when he arrived he was shopping for one. Even the salesman was fooled. They gladly took his money when he swap out for an identical looking real 4WD. I bought my son a Avalanche in 07 that had Z71 badges all over it that was 2WD. I only realized it when I used it while mine was in the shop. Reminds me way back when GM put SS badges on 6cyls.

If you want the 2 speed transfer case opt for the Z71or the X31 option package.

No because it has an actual 4HI mode in addition to AUTO making it a true "lock it in to 4x4" system.  AUTO mode makes a GM basically an AWD truck as the power to the front is sent on demand.

In that instance, anything with the AutoTrak system, when in auto is a selectable AWD vehicle.

GM did actually make 2 wheel drive Z71s however.  This was a legitimate option 2007-2015.  It got you the suspension from a 4x4 Z71 but in a 2wd truck.

They stopped doing it on Silverado in 2015 but you can still get a Z71 Colorado in 2WD as Z71 is a trim level:

Here is a link to a Colorado that is legit a 2wd Z71:  2021 Chevrolet Colorado Z71 For Sale In Orange Park | Cars.com

Here is a legit 2wd Z71 2014 for sale:  2014 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2LT For Sale In Cullman | Cars.com

Here is a legit GMT-900 Z71 2wd:  2007 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 LT2 Crew Cab For Sale In Plano | Cars.com

And 2 Avalanche Z71 2wd just for giggles:  2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LTZ For Sale In Charleston | Cars.com

2007 Chevrolet Avalanche LT For Sale In San Antonio | Cars.com

I ran all the build sheets on them just to be 100%.  They are real 2wd Z71.  They are not a dealership sticker job (which sadly do exist) they are off the production line.

^^^This^^^

For a period of time,  Z71 was different shocks, skid plates, bigger air filter and badges/decals.

Probably most often added to 4wd's, but not always.

    • So I'm in the middle of a DOD AFM delete on my 6.2 L86 Sierra. I had a pick holding the tensioner but after I got the Cam phaser gear off I was cleaning off all the rtv and apparently I didn't have the pick seated far enough in. I bumped it and the tensioner sprang forward.  I think everything is good but I want a second opinion. The top of the tensioner is just a looped piece of plastic that rides in that channel right? There is no spring or anything is there? I got the gear and chain back on and it seems tight and everything looks right. I'm hoping nothing fell out.
    • My 2015 1500 LTZ Silverado suddenly won't go into 4 x 4 low. It will go into 4 x 4 high.
    • Yep, just a quick reference point.    My main point being I’d do a thousand other things before I’d pay 10k for a transmission.    Speaking in ignorance cause I don’t look at these trucks, what is it worth? 20k?
    • I think users are going to want to pick their monitored parameters, which parameters they want to see first.    It should probably start with baseline at a minimum and adjust to learned, but be able to overlay baseline for comparison.   A simple severity level would be able to determine what type of alerting is appropriate or user selectable.    Why not use the OBD port though?   I think a phone connection would be a good idea, push notifications type deal.   Number 1 issue is having data is useless if you don’t know what the data should be under normal conditions.
    • I thought I would use your thread and add to it as I just did my first longer drive with my truck in the last couple of days. I drove from the Grande Prairie area of Alberta down to Edmonton and most of where I drove in the city was the ring road so fairly free flowing but a bit of stop and go as well in the city. Stayed the night and returned home and not too many stops along the way each way but every restart and certainly every cold start sets it back for fuel mileage. Why I say that is I see some people will cherry pick a fuel mileage leg after the vehicle had been warmed up driveline wise before hand and its a forgiving ( easy rolling drive leg for example ) and call that their fuel mileage which can give a false perception of reality. I was not heavily loaded at all but never the less the flip bak cover, rubber bed mat, various tools etc and extra jerry cans of fuel all way up to a few hundred pounds of dead weight so its not an empty truck. The cold inflation tire pressures are set more near the freezing point so once they are warmed up driving I was showing 45 front and over 40 rear and realize high inflation pressures would help a little in fuel mileage but certainly not the ride on our crap sections of highway. The weather was good so was not raining as that can really drag mileage down, in fact I had a bit of a tail wind on average driving home. Most people on here would never have driven on that freeway to visualize it but its got a fair bit of rolling type of landscape with numerous river valleys. For the most part I had it on cruise set to 62 although kicking it off if I caught it in time before it started down shifting and self braking going down the grades. Most of the more substantial grades its shifting into 7th I believe as 8th just doesn't have it. Total distance round trip was 643 miles and my overall average and I did refuel three times in all, figured out to 17.65 miles per US gallon. My best fuel mileage section refuel within all of this figured out to 18.46 and these are all hand calculated figures. I find if anything that the trucks computer can be over optimistic, sometimes its pretty close but other times its stretching it. On paper persay in theory the truck would have just about made it on fumes for that whole drive without refueling once.    Which made me think of the topic thread of the wonder if these trucks could do 20 mpg and that is a good question, certainly would have to be on an easy going flat highway, no head wind, the right temperature, not packing around a bunch of dead weight and puttering along even slower than I was I would suspect and going steady and not stopping to smell the flowers or take a piss !. It probably is possible but not without effort to attain that with the wind resistance and weight of these trucks. Of course on my drive most people are passing me if they have the power as per loaded highway tractors, never mind a lot of speedy vehicles but the speed limit is 68 and most are at or well over that.
