Question on EGR valve code on my '98

Recommended Posts

'98 Z71, 350 with the electric EGR. I have a ses light that comes on and stays on with a code saying "EGR flow". My question(s) is there a way to test the electronic EGR? What controls it, could that be bad? Or since it has 223,000 miles on it, the EGR is junk?

With that milage? :D Get a new EGR valve dude.

I got mine OEM NEW from e-bay for $76.- all incl. Part Number was 214-1080 and seller was aphindustries. They sell a lot of parts an are good people.

I am pretty sure the EGR valve listed above for the 99' truck is different then the one you need for your 98.

I have a 97 with the 350 and I have seen that same code 3 times. I pull the EGR valve clean it out real good with intake cleaner (not carb cleaner) while pushing the plunger in and out. Then re-install with a new gasket from autozone for $2.50 and it has done the trick every time so far. This fix seems to last about a year for me.

I didn't look on eBay, but the cheapest I could fine a new valve for my engine was about $125 bucks. I am a cheap bastard, so I am going to keep pulling it and cleaning it as long as I can.

I appertiate your input, but I have to somewhat disagree with you: the 98 and 99 Tahoe engines are the same. As far as e-bay you just have to look for a low price. That's why I even mentioned the e-bay merchant, part number and my good experience with them. What else can I say: I'm just trying to help.

Hey Andreas, your totally right. The EGR valve is exactly the same for both years. I miss-spoke.

The eBay price is real good. I just found that a cleaning can fix the problem before you actually need a whole new valve.

Thanks, for the correction!

The little plunger with the torx in it didn't move up or down. I did manage to get it cleaned enough to get movement out of it by pushing on it. But when it's plugged back in and the key turned on, it doesn't do anything. I guess it's time for a new one. I hate having to spend that kind of money on such a tiny part :D I'm also getting an O2 code. So between the EGR, and all 3 O2's, it's $270! What a rip!

With the info I got from here and some on another forum I decided the best bet was to choke the cost and get a new EGR. New ones in, along with a new after cat O2 sensor. No more annoying SES light! Thanks for the help!

I agree these parts are definately expensive. I'm not too happy about that eighter.

A friend of mine managed to blow all 4 oxigen sensors as he stopped the engine in a deep creek and water reached and messed up the sensors. What a pain: he blew $350.- at that moment. But I guess that would be an entirely different topic.

No worries,

As far as e-bay, I have to conceed that I had to look long time on e-bay to get that price. Also I tried to be smart and bought an EGR valve before the one on the truck actually failed. I tried the new one on the truck, it worked great, put the old one back on . So now I have a brand new EGR just in case and a wife who thinks I blew $76.- for nothing.

The only way the EGR pintle will move is to use a Tech 2 and command EGR. Just turning on the Ign. wont do anything.
