Hey guys, I got my new sierra a week ago. The 6.2 is amazing and so is the knowledge gained in these threads. First on the list is a K&N intake and a Magnaflow exhaust. After that a custom tune from Nelson this summer, because I can't get a response from BlackBear. Still in the break-in stage and still haven't really got on the gas :nono:

 

 

i got on the gas from day 1. i read about the hard break-in, and it makes sense to me, supposed to seal the rings better initially. Controversial but figured i would give it a shot. currently @2500k with no issues,

I don't think the crateenginedepot.com break in procedure is meant for production engines, I would bet the tolerances & clearances are way different in a crate motor. The 20W50 oil recommendation is not correct for production LS motors & AC Delco oil filters suck

Last night I was able to take my new truck (GMC Sierra SLT 6.2 3.73'S) on the interstate.. Speed limiter came on at 92 mph.. Is this normal????

yep the factory limiter is around 92-93. THis is based on the speed rating of your tires.

The Helm 2007 GMT/07-CKUV-2 manual states in volume 2, chapter 9, page 721, Engine Content Specification chart, that the L92 of that year, both first and second design, are not E85 capable (first design=AFM hardware, but AFM system inactive; second design=no AFM hardware).

 

92 speed limiter? Really!? That's WAY too low! Too easy to get into a 2 lane road/highway passing situation and not be able to complete it because of that, with possibly fatal consequences! I think of my kids' driving habits when I write this; they'll never remember until too late if I tell them. Looks like that'll be getting tuned out real soon! Next, I guess I'll be looking into the tire situation, as exceeding speed ratings carry consequences of their own.

 

My kids still think they're driving my old 'Vette when behind the wheel of the truck.

I don't plan on it, but the need to could arise unexpectedly, and I'd like the "headroom" to do it available.

My sentiments exactly...... if you need to exceed 92MPH to pass another vehicle, may you should consider giving yourself more distance before executing a pass, not more speed.

 

Assuming the person that you are passing is doing less than 80, you would be passing the person @ over 12MPH. @ 12MPH, it should take about 5 seconds to pass.

Whew, truck came with Goodyear Wranglers on it rated 112mph.. They made road noise, so at 42 miles, I changed to Michelin LTX's which are rated at 118mph.

 

Now, how do I get the limiter raised?? TIA

Mine certainly doesn't shut down at 92. More like 99 but not 92, for sure.

 

I used to have a Chrysler Concorde. The "check engine" light would come on @ 90MPH...... and stay on....... :smash:

About 10 years ago, in my '98 Silverado 5.7, I came up on a Cavalier doing ~65 on a long, straight, level 2 lane road in the middle of a clear, sunny day. Son and I saw headlights of an oncoming truck waaaaay off in the distance, and both agreed there was ample space and time, so I began my pass at 70. Our truck went to 98, when the limiter kicked in; meanwhile, that oncoming truck got real close real fast. Yeah, we made the pass in less than 5 seconds, but that didn't mean squat in light of the fact the oncoming vehicle was probably doing the average speed of 95 that all people do on that road (SR 198; Coalinga - Hanford). But we could not gauge that when the truck was so far away at the onset of the maneuver. See why I would like the extra fudge factor? It's not about me; it's about the speed of oncoming vehicles and the ability to accurately assess it from a great distance.

    • I have the same running boards on my truck and I do agree they are bulky. I also find myself stepping over them when getting in and out of the truck. Besides providing protection to the rocker panels, they aren't very useful.  I will be replacing them soon with the Amp Powersteps. 
    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.
    • 10 Ford and Chevy engines proven to reach 300,000 miles   You may note a common 3K OCI on this list of gas motors. I skipped over the diesels. Dh'O. 
    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
