Adding AUX reverse light to truck under bumper

Recommended Posts

I am wanting to add a reverse light under my rear bumper to give me a little more light when backing up. It doesn't have to be some HID type light, just something brighter. I want them to come on when I put the truck in reverse, so what wire do I need to tap in to? Something in the taillight harness or the 7-pin connector for a trailer?

I will probably just get a light from Autozone or something to use.

I am new on this board. So admins can delete this.

I did add a reverse alarm to my fathers 2007 express 3500. It was an orange wire on that, if memory serves . It was hot 12 volt in reverse.

What vehicle is this? You might have it in a tow harness. I don't suggest the vampire slices. It Worth the time taken to use a soldering iorn.

It is very easy to add auxiliary back up lights. Get whatever set of lights you want to add to your truck. I'm pretty sure you can find a better set than the ones at Autozone. The ones at Autozone are fine, but they might look ugly after a few years. Next, pick up a 12 volt replay with wiring harness. If you can't find a harness, make sure you have some connectors to add to your wires.

Wiring:

-Connect a 12 volt constant power source (usually the battery) to the relay (#30).

-Connect your ground (#85)

-Splice into your stock back up lights power (+) wire. You may be able to do this at the trailer harness (#86)

-Connect the auxiliary back up light power cabe to the remaining wire (#87).

Note: If you run the power straight from the battery, be sure to add an inline fuse. If you get the 12 volt constant from another source, then is should already have a fuse, but it doesn't hurt to add one. I believe you can get all your power from the trailer power out (7-pin setup), so if your truck came with it, the wiring will be much easier.

That is it.

Good luck.
