8.1L mpg while towing 6,000+ lbs

OP you should get a 4.8, its really way more powerful then the 6.0, definatley way more powerful then the 8.1....and the 4L60 is so much better then the allison its not even funny.

The mileage on the 8.1 reminded me of when a friend borrowed my 73 Chev 3/4 with 454 years ago. I told him to run on main tank until empty then switch over to extra tank and run until that one was empty and then switch back to main. The reason was the return line was only plumbed to the main tank so when running on the extra tank, it was basically burning some fuel and transferring the rest to the main tank. I was too cheap at the time to put in a valve that switched the return line also.

 

He brought it back and said he was sorry, he could not keep up with how much fuel it used. The extra tank was partially full and the main tank was near full. He had been putting some gas in the extra tank, and it was transferring to the main... I had a good laugh (I had told him how it was working before he borrowed it, but he got the tanks mixed up).

 

 

Sometimes it does feel like you can see the gauge move... We went camping once (with a slide in pickup camper on that truck) and had to stop every 100 miles and get 20 gallons more (before I had extra tank and the main tank was only 20 gallons). We were driving into headwind and it was only getting slightly more than 5mpg.

 

Love my big block though! You will like the towing (just not the mileage).
