Tricky to fill up with gas?

I've had it happen occasionally on my other vehicles, mostly with newer nozzles that have the vapor recovery covers. But this happens 5 to 10 times now at each fill up. It's hard to find an angle or setting where it won't happen. Once or twice wouldn't be an issue, but 10 times gets frustrating - especially when it's cold and I want to be inside my vehicle.

Usually jumping in and out of the vehicle isn't safe either. Lot of service stations in the area have the "you must be in attendance while filling" signs. a.) incase the nozzle falls out and it on autofill, it's not stopping and b.) the static cause between jumping in and out of the truck.

Just my .02.

I have had the same problem with my last three vehicles, (Tacoma, Crown Vic and Sierra). What I have learned is if the fuel flow is very fast it will shut off many times throughout the fill up. I like to fill up at Murphy's Express because you can set the pump to a very low flow and it will not stop during the entire fill up until its full.

I had that issue on my 2012. Seemed to do it more when it was cold out, for whatever reason. No issue with it yet on the 2014

I have the same exact problem with my brand new 14.. I asked my buddy who owns the Chevron I fuel up at (I only go to one gas station, a Chevron, and use 91) and he said this has been a problem with all new vehicles in the last few years. All of his nozzles are brand new too.

My 2014 is a lot worse than the 2011 I traded. Just as others stated, you have to slide the pump back to the point it might fall out to use auto fill.

I have only had this happen when I was below 1/4 tank. I think it has to do with the air volume in the tank trying to escape. The vent line is much smaller than the fill so when the fuel is displacing the air it kicks back and cuts the pump off. As others have stated if you leave the nozzle out a little allowing more air to escape and start slow it does not do it... On mine anyway.

I have a problem. I live in NJ where your not allowed to pump your own gas. The a-holes at the gas station always feel the need to top off the tank and then rip the nozzle out, 99¢ of gas all over the side of the truck. Some days they even think your car or truck is their own personal arm rest. One day, I will be getting into a fight at this gas station.

Other then that when I'm in PA pumping my own I have no issues.

I had the same issue for my 09 Sierra. Its happened a couple of times on the 14 as well. I usually start slow (1/4 squeeze?) and then after its gone for 30 seconds or so I set it on full blast. Seems to work.

Had this problem on my 2010 but not the 2014. Found that on the 2010 if I rolled back the rubber splash cap that's on the nozzle so the tank could breath I didn't have the issue so bad. I would have thought pulling the nozzle out a bit would do it but I think doing so changed the angle enough that it continued to shut off. Rolling back the splash cap\cover seemed to make it work just fine 90% of the time.

Really? Heck I get mad at myself, much less some disinterested person, if I spill some on the truck. I would have to move. Really. LOL

I usually use the same gas station each time I fill up, whne possible. The nozzle at the Chevron I use does not have the black rubber condom on it. Of the 5 or so fill ups at this Cehveron, no issues. This morning, I stopped at an Exxon for gas as I was at a 1/4 fo a tank. The Exxon had the black vapor condom on the nozzles. Wouldn't you know it, I had the fill up issue described here. Maybe it is the nozzle with the rubber clean air protectors on them that is causing the issue, not the filler neck. It would make sense. With the rubber piece covering the inlet tube, the air being displaced by the incoming fuel cannot escape. Hell, what do I know? Just sharing my experience.

What are the build dates for the vehicles that are having this issue? Mine is 12-11-13 and it has never shut off prematurely i have over 3k miles now so several tanks. I had a 09 that would occasionally have a hiccup at certain pumps and I was just thinking the other day how well this 2014 fills up by comparison to the 09. Maybe the early build 2014s have an issue and GM needs to send out a TSB?????
