Short Box vs Regular Box

I at least need the standard bed since I use the bed more than I do the back seat. So for me a double cab made since for me since I don't have kids yet. Also when it comes to toolboxes that fit a short bed, they would be to narrow for what I need to put in it. So I need a full width box (dimension from behind cab towards the tailgate). Before they offered crew cab standard bed in the 1/2 tons, I would consider a 2500 just to get the standard bed with a crew (if I ever needed a crew).

Ya when I was looking at the '14s it was a good 4K more for a crew short bed over the double standard bed. I didn't see any crew cabs with standard beds at the time so I'm sure that would be an extra couple grand so $5-6K just to get an extra 6" (roughly) of cab.

I have the standard box and am very happy. I think it looks better and has more functionality.

Go long you can't go wrong

I agree with you, but to each his/her own. Individuals circumstance dictate choice, family, garage size, how much you want to spend, etc. I often use mine to haul stuff so I needed a good size bed so I chose the 6.5', over the shoe box.

So what do you like or dislike about your short box or regular box?

I'm looking at buying a 2015 crew cab and I want the regular box because of the additional length. I might want to haul a dirt bike or a golf cart. The crew cab regular box has a longer wheel base and an overall length of 20ft. I can only find double cabs with a regular box at the dealers. I don't think the double cab has enough back seat leg room.

Thanks for your comments.

When refering to box length GM doesn't call any of them "regular", I'm assuming you mean a long box (8')?

If so, thats the reason you cannot find the truck you are looking for. 1500 crew cabs only come in "short" (5'8") and "standard" (6'6").

If you move up to a 2500HD you can get a crew cab with the long (8') box

As for me I have the "standard" (6'6") - It's far superior to the short box IMO, it's a pickup lol

Grandpa is referring to the standard box. For this topic I believe standard, long, and regular box are all referring to the 6'6" bed.

Yes. Back in the day there was a long bed usually 8ft or so and a short bed/regular which was around 6ft or so. Now we have a long 8ft, regular/standard in the 6ft variety and then a short which is 5ish

Yes I was referring to the standard 6'6" box and not the 8' long box. I have edited the original post.

Thanks everyone for the comments. I have ordered a 2015 Silverado crew cab with the standard 6'6" box and the 6.2L V8.

I have the short box crew with a soft roll up tonneu. If I lived in the country, instead of houston, I might have considered the 6.5 ft box. But this thing is already a huge PITA for city maneuvering and parking. I have a 24' deep garage, so eitehr would have worked, but with the short box I have room to leave my trailer hitch on and still have plenty of forgiveness for parking.

I have not felt any real compromises with the short box. If I was going to add a toolbox, I would have gone with the 6.5. But ever since I had an Avalanche I have wanted my bed covered. It is almost mandatory to not worry about folks stealing your junk when in the city.

Back in the day regular meant 8'.

I worked for a tier one parts supplier when the crew with 5'8" was being developed.

We called it the 'short short box', until someone at GM decreed that going forward it would be called the short box, the 6.5 would be the standard (or regular) box and the 8' would be the long box.

It's been 10 years, and confusion still exists.

FWIW, before the crew cab shortbox was release, the biggest (by far) seller was the extended cab 6.6ft. I don't know relative volume numbers now (and it's been out for 10 years) but would bet that in 1500's the biggest volume is now in crew cab short.

I bought the Double Cab with the 6'6" box. Had to wait about 6 months longer than if I would have bought a Crew Cab, but worth it to me.

I have an empty nest, and would rather have the longer bed and shorter cab, while maintaining the same length as the Crew with short box.

I just need the back cab for my hunting gear, and occasional riders. There is just enough room for adults, and plenty for kids. I like the longer box, and it all fits nicely in my garage without pushing my deep freeze through the back wall like a Crew Cab with 6'6" box would.

Just enough cab, and just enough box.

The crew with the 6'6 box is too long for me. My next truck maybe the double cab with the 6'6 box. I occasionally have need for a longer bed. Kids will be at age where they won't be riding with me by that time.

I have a crew cab with a short box... plenty of space all around... a pain in the butt if you want to buy a cheap cap ( even one that is not color matched ) But overall happy with the space

My last truck was a CC 5 1/2 ft bed. No more short short beds for me.

I prefer a box that's not too big, but not too small. If the box is too big, things will just be flopping around in there with a lot of wasted space. But, trying to fit large things into a box that's too small isn't much fun either. Believe me, I've tried. It can be done if you take your time, but you may end up damaging the box or your cargo in the process. Wait a minute.........what were we taking about????
