Trailer hitch recall for 14/15's with Z82

I work for the company that makes these hitches. First off, we inspect all 45 welds on the hitch. Every shift also preforms a destruct to make sure the welds are up to standard. They are mostly made in the us, here in michigan. Smaller portion comes from the Mexico plant. Reason for the recall? Gm wanted specs changed and wanted to complete with ford's f-150. So for the reinforcmenet components on the hitch are welded with .52 diameter wire. The rest is .45 wire. There you go. Right from the source.

Recalls are typically for potential safety issues, not spec change. I don't see any GM towing spec change for my 2014 after the hitch replacement. Im certain that's the information you were given, but somebody is blowing smoke!! Recall states some hitches were failing.

Check to see if it needs replacement? My dealer Service Manager read the recall to me over the phone. No need to inspect. If VIN matches, order part and replace. (He was surprised to see there is a core charge - which shows "0.00" on the invoice above). And then he said mine would be the first they fix when parts come in because they don't have the part in stock and can't order yet. They will get a batch of them in and schedule replacement. And then you get scheduled in right away, but it is to "check"?

 

The interesting part to me is how inconsistent these things are handled on a dealer by dealer basis.

Core charge is likely to try and prevent it from getting installed somewhere else.

My towing is NHT...so I assume that's not me?

Why "assume"? If you have the Z82 RPO, then check your VIN. No assumption needed. Although some are questioning whether their dealer installed hitch platform is included, but surely your NHT came with a trailering package? Question really is whether or not you have the Z82....

You'll have the Z82 as well as the NHT. Doubt you can get the NHT without the Z82.

 

Anyone in Canada involved in the recall? I keep checking but my VIN (build 3/15) shows no recall.

Z82 lists under my RPO codes (glove box silver label) as: Z82 - TRAILERING EQUIPMENT PKG

You can tell if you have it by looking at your RPO codes in the glove box.

 

To see if your VIN is included in the recall, go to my.chevrolet.com and input your VIN or you can call your dealer.

Just ran my 15 Crew Cab Z71, GM website shows no recalls on my truck. I think it's a 10/2014 build date.

 

Has intregated trailer brake control, and I'm pretty sure it has the towing package, so not sure why mine is not part of the recall?

Hello All, Just got my new 2014 and just joined here as well. Had it a few weeks now and love it. Just got this recall from GMC and have it set up for Wednesday to get it fixed. Hoping to learn a lot from everyone. Great site by the way.

They are separate options.

 

JL1 (brake controller) requires Z82 trailering equipment, but Z82 does not require JL1

 

Z82 Trailering equipment, includes trailer hitch, 7-pin and 4-pin connectors
On base - Includes (G80) locking rear differential.
On SLE - Includes (G80) locking rear differential on 2WD models. Included with (GAT) All Terrain Package, (NHT) Max Trailering Package, (PDA) Texas SLE Value Package or (PDU) SLE Value Package.
Std on SLT.
JL1 Trailer brake controller, integrated
On base - Requires (Z82) Trailering equipment. Available as a free flow option on Regular Cab when (ZW9) pickup box delete is ordered.
On SLE - Requires (Z82) Trailering equipment. Included with (NHT) Max Trailering Package. Available as a free flow option on Regular Cab when (ZW9) pickup box delete is ordered..
On SLT - Included with (NHT) Max Trailering Package.

I keep checking for my VIN (build 3/14) but nothing comes up.

 

Called the local dealer and they are aware of the program and tell me to bring my truck in for an inspection. If needed they will order the hitch and I go back to get it installed.

 

Maybe GM is doing things differently up here in Canada so may be best to call your local dealer.

When I called my service manager, he looked up my VIN and it showed up in their system. He printed off the recall and my info and gave it to their parts guy to order the part. No inspection needed. Your dealer should find it associated by VIN if it is needed. Otherwise, it most likely should not need it - remember, this is a selective recall by VIN.

Oil change coming up this month as well as I'll have them swap the tires, so I'll chat with them when I make that appointment.

Took mine in today and had it replaced. I also ask about the high beam issue and they checked and bingo. Mine was fixed. I have not tried it yet so not sure how much it will help. This is my 2nd truck I bought from Pinkerton Chevy in Lynchburg VA and have to say they have stood behind every issue I have had with both truck. Well worth the visit if you are looking for a vehicle. Ask for Matt Brink.

    • Common failure.  You need to replace the fuel door housing.   The painted cover transfers over to the new housing.  To remove the old one there is 4 spots where you poke the plastic to release it.  
    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?
