Trailer hitch recall for 14/15's with Z82

Thanks to this forum for brining this recall to my attention. I stopped by the dealer today they have ordered a new hitch for me. It seemed wieid but he said they couldn't order the hitch without having a service appointment booked. He booked one far out just in case takes a while to get a hitch in. I'm in no big rush but it should be in next week.

I have a '14 with Z82, no NHT or JL1, no recall as of yet.

Oil change coming up this month as well as I'll have them swap the tires, so I'll chat with them when I make that appointment.

 

Went to the dealer and I'm not on the recall list - however they said to continue to check the recall site for the next while. This dealer has only seen 2015's that require the new hitch (based on VIN). They don't know why they haven't seen any 14's at their shop yet.

 

And don't forget to get the right seasonal air in the tires they put on!

My 2014 Double Cab built in August 2013 is on the list. Dealer ordered the replacement this week and said there was about 5 ahead of me. I guess they are trickling them in to dealers a few at a time. Said they would call when I'm up to bat.

My 14 was on the list. They ordered the part and had it in a few days. Took it in last week to get the hitch swapped out. I was in and out of the dealer in under 1.5 hours.

I work for the company that makes these hitches. First off, we inspect all 45 welds on the hitch. Every shift also preforms a destruct to make sure the welds are up to standard. They are mostly made in the us, here in michigan. Smaller portion comes from the Mexico plant. Reason for the recall? Gm wanted specs changed and wanted to complete with ford's f-150. So for the reinforcmenet components on the hitch are welded with .52 diameter wire. The rest is .45 wire. There you go. Right from the source.

 

Do the new/reworked hitches have the same rating/sticker on them?

Got my recall notice last week. GM rep said 2 week lead time on parts so book the appointment a couple weeks out.

 

Called the dealer today and they wanted me to come in for an inspection to confirm the recall. After some arguing I told them to have the parts ready for when I booked the visit.

 

This will be my first service and should get a free oil change. Dealer wanted me to spend $200 CAD on what appeared to be an oil change and tire rotation.

 

If this is what is to be expected going forward they will not be staying my dealer.

Got mine done. They said hours so I took wife to work and have a vehicle. They call me an hour later lol. I would of just waited

I have a 2015 Rally 2 Silverado and it was affected by the recall they have ordered the parts to do the recall just waiting on them to come in

Called my dealer service manager for status. I was in line for one of the replacement units in their bulk order. They received a few and immediately used them on their "in stock" units (he was a little embarrassed about this, and said not sure who made that decision when he has customers waiting - perhaps they don't want "new" customers to have to come back right after a sale...hmmm). So, he has now special ordered one for me (should be in within a week) and said I could wait for it to be installed. He will call me when it arrives. The service director told him yesterday that this recall affects 500,000+ trucks.

I'm afraid my dealer will screw something up. They have been doing oil changes on my wife's 2012 Cruze since new. Last oil change they charged her $29 for a new oil pan plug. Since they were the only ones to touch it they wrecked it and shouldn't have charged her for it. Needless to say I am doing the maintenance now. What could they screw up with the hitch? I might be safer with the factory unit that is on there recall or not.

Whether to trust them to do it right is always a consideration with these things. I guess you have to weigh it for yourself. A recall of 500,000+ trucks with a return core charge of $100 sounds pretty serious to me (and to my dealer service manager), so I'm having it done. But I haven't had those types of issues with my dealer service group and they have a good track record with me through several vehicles. Good luck...

$ 29 for a new oil plug? I have a 2013 Sonic with a 1.8 liter engine (same as one used in base Cruze) and a new drain plug costs me less than $ 8. This drain plug has a star hole, so if u one uses a wrong size star bit, it is easy to damage it. What you need to worry about more though is the aluminum oil pan threads. those will give long before you strip out the steel threads on the plug itself. The 1.4 liter turbo engine has a similar plug, but with a hex head.
