The dilemma....

I've made the decision that I'm going to trade my 15 gasser on a new diesel. The hype of the new L5P with 900+ ft lbs of torque is hard to ignore. The dilemma is that in a 60 mile radius of my area there are roughly 30 2016 crew cab LML diesel on the lots right now at up to 20% off msrp. Not any 17's on any of the lots around me. I don't need to trade right away but when the 17's do show up will it be worth paying the price for the latest and greatest or so they say Duramax.

The '17s are just starting to hit the lots, so it'll be a bit before there are several to choose from.

But it sounds like you you've already made your decision...

How much are you willing to spend? Seems like you can get a great deal on a 2016. You will have to pay full price on a 2017 due to it just coming out and more than likely will be a hot item. Supply and demand. Unless you really need all that extra torque I think you will be happy with a LML.

Unless you are really pushing the towing weight, the '16 is just as capable. Just a bit cheaper. And it has the kinks worked out.

Purchased a 16 2500hd ltz duramax in Oct and recall the dealer telling me you will not regret this. They were/are 100% right, truck is amazing. 20% off a 60k truck is a lot of money to pass-up and you won't see that on a 17. Best of luck, Ski

The DEF tank on the new 17s is a big eyesore. GM didn't make things any better on an already crappy piece of engineering. Better not plan on doing any decent off roading. Might rip things right off. :(

I'm sure the L5P will need some things worked out, I'd wait a few years if you really wanted one. Meanwhile the LML's are a very solid engine PLUS 20% off, I know where my money would be going

Personally, I'd wait on the L5P. I'm intrigued, but I have a perfectly fine LML right now and I'd hate to trade that for potential first year problems.

Unless you need the extra pull, I'd wait and see what the engine does with some miles on it, and possibly trade for an 18. Or trade for a 16 now and be done with it.

I'd go for the 17, that thing will be a beast! I bought an early 2011 when the LML came out and had NO issues with it, was a great truck. If you personally don't care about the latest and greatest and just want capability then go for the 16, it will save you LOTS of money. Good luck with your choice, I don't think you can go wrong either way.

I love spending other peoples money. I want you to go buy the absolute highest optioned truck and absolute latest model and I want you to pay full MSRP plus throw in a big tip for the salesperson. Now you have permission go GitErDone

Great help guys thanks. I think like some said that the 17's will be at a premium for several months. I might go look tomorrow and see what they'll give me for trade on mine. I know I'm going to take a hit but they gotta be ready to move these 16's sitting on the lots. I want a black one and there is 4 at 1 of the dealers. 3 lTZ's and 1 LT. I don't really want to pay for a LTZ but they have the biggest discount it looks like.

I have sort of the same dilemma (keep or trade in) - currently in 16 LML Denali. Drove 17 last week. Signifiant seat-of-the-pants power improvement. Everything else is pretty much the same. Yes, there will be some first / second year new Duramax issues. It's a complicated machine, built by people, so it's fundamentally flawed. However, GM will stand behind the product. Go for the 17. If you choose 16 - it's amazing as well. Both model years are great choices.

Your choice: Is the performance worth the monetary different - only you can answer that question.

I got a 16 3500 drw with the duramax and am very happy with it. Its also my daily driver. On the w/e i pull a 35 ft winnebago toy hauler. it pulls it good in all conditions that I have ran across . I got 12k on it. Ive had it for about 6 months, before I had a 16 2500 cc with the duramax. I'm going to keep my 16 after the first of the year when I upgrade to a 5er. I cant justify the money looking at it right now. some advice would be if your not towing 15k and up you will be happy with either one. Have Fun at whatever decision you make for yourself, all the trucks are good.. To be honest and I don't like saying it but Dodge has crazy good numbers for pulling.

Coming from a gasser I know I'll be impressed either way. I know that the cost of a diesel isn't justified in my case but decided I want one. I pull a 30 tt on a couple trips and a 24' enclosed trailer for snowmobiling these trips are usually in the mountains and the gasser is a struggle at 10k' it's good to hear that most are very impressed with the LML. Last year was my first true experience with a diesel we took a friend's new cummins to the mountains and I never realized what I was missing for power until then.
