Ambient LED floor lighting

I'm looking to add ambient led floor lighting to my 2016 Silverado. Is it possible to tap into the dash board dimmer so the lights can be dimmed with that switch?

I was going to suggest tapping into the dome circuit... but you want them to dim. Hmmmm... Now you got me thinking here if there is a diode mod to perform where you can tap the dome circuit with a diode - into the interior Dimming circuit. With the stripe towards the Dimming circuit so that when you dim, it doesn't backfeed into the dome circuit.

No, you may not tap into the dash dimmer knob for your aftermarket LED foot well lights. Instead, you'll want to find some sort of aftermarket switch & dimmer knob that you can mount on the bottom dash trim piece.

The floor lighting is done off of the same circuit. It's all in that thread. Go to page 1 and work your way down.

Interested also! Can you use the same circuit as the existing ambient lighting in the overhead console and the front driver and passenger door handle openings?

I believe you can. The only issue is that it would be on all the time (at night). I'm adding footwell lighting this week and plan on tapping into the dome circuit.

What if you dont want them on all the time. I would like mine to only come on with the interior lights come on and would like the to dim off with the lights.

I'm thinking 2 different ideas , adding footwell lighting to existing dome circuit and

also adding mood lighting as well, similar to the pic below . I like the overhead/door handle mood light that

the truck has already and want to add it in a few more areas.

Indeed, but would tapping the existing dome circuit work for this. I dont want them on as mood lighting I just want them on as a convenience so I can see the floor better when I turn on the dome or open the doors but I want them to dim with the dome. Having them on all the time to me seems very 2003 honda civic type R lol

Agreed , I wouldn't want the bright floor lamps on all the time either, but a soft lamp is what is in the Caddys and higher end autos. Definitely not looking for the rice rocket look. Haha

There are two different ideas and two different circuits to deal with here.

 

If you want footwell lighting that works similar to the dome light in that it is on when the doors open, when you unlock truck, or hit the switch in the overhead then you need to tap dome light circuit.

 

If you want ambient light similar to the dome overhead light and the lights in the door handle you need to tap that circuit.

 

I am looking to do both a brighter set of footwell lights that operate with the dome light and then some dim lights that come on with the rest of the lights at night so I will need to tap both circuits.

 

There is a post here where someone showed the wire to tap that ties into the dash lighting and can use the dimmer, everyone knows dome light can be tapped in drivers side A pillar

There was a video I watched that showed someone installing Towing Mirrors and tapped into the door harness to light up his park/running lamps. It uses the same interior dimming control (same as the switch led indicators and dash lighting). Found the video. It was by @arth. The circuit is the LED Backlight Dimming Control (Circuit # 6817). According to Upfitter, there are many locations where this can be tapped. I am working on footwells tomorrow and will test this circuit out.
