2019 Four cylinder

Turbocharged engines aren’t peaky like NA engines. Their strength is a broad, flat torque curve.

 

The turbo 4 makes nearly as much torque as the 5.3, over a much broader range than even the 5.3.

 

I guarantee you that it will be faster, and more satisfying to drive, than the 4.3 V6

 

It still gets disappointing MPG ratings though...

The MPG numbers are in my sig for my 2014 5.3 2wd. Seems I am pretty close to the 4 banger MPG already. Wonder why they did not turbo the V6?

Why,  the size and ability for this engine to fit in Multiple configurations other than the T1's...Also, this engine coupled with GM's advanced electrification and ample ROOM under the HOOD even with the new architecture and structural safety enhancements that CRAMP the overall front engine BAY on T1's

It could be true that GM has plans to offer the 2.7 with some form of electrification, or offer the 2.7 in another vehicle.  But, presently, we have no evidence of that, so many are just scratching their head, wondering what GM is thinking.

If they wanted to do a Turbo Motor, they shoulda used the 3.0TT V6 from the Caddy CT6.

 

Woulda been fun to see that go against the 3.5L Ecoboost. 

 

Or even the 3.6TT V6 from the ATS-V.

I think the the biggest reason for the negativity is the number of cylinders. For many, only 4 doesn't get any respect.

What if you ordered your truck by horsepower without knowing how many cylinders?

You can get 285 hp (no extra charge) 22 mpg, 310 hp (no extra charge) 21 mpg, 355 hp ($1500 extra) 18 mg, and 420 hp ($3000 extra) 17 mpg. Again, no clue how many cylinders. Which way would you go?

Maybe part of the issue is GM has touted the v-8 in trucks and built a mindset on that premise. Now they have dropped a 4 turbo on the crowd. It may be like trying to sell ice to a eskimo .

Knowing nothing else about the engines, I'd be choosing between 310 hp and 355 hp, and leaning towards the 355hp, unless I could save more than the $1,500 difference by choosing the 310 hp.  $1,500 for 45 more hp sounds like a good deal to me.

Happy me I don't live in the world of buying 'pigs in a poke'. If not allowed to know what I'm buying....I'm not buying regardless the price or performance.

 

You can get the equivalent cylinder pressure to make 3000 hp. from 50 cubic inches with a stick of TNT in a soup can but it is a one trick pony.  Regardless of the method knock limits of the fuel put a lid on BMEP and the smaller the motor the tighter she needs to be wrung out to paint the target. For a given amount of useable power the smaller the motor and fewer the cylinders the higher the component stresses are and the faster they wear, the easier they break. The only people this benefits are the board of directors for whom were are reminded constantly are the only ones that do matter in a company. 

 

I believe they are currently thinking that people can be heard like cattle into no choice or an impossible one. Guess again. I need food, water, shelter, clothing and God. Everything else is a want. This I don't want......or need.

I’m not totally against new technology. I’ve bought many new model runs and new cars on the block. My first car was a 73 Mazda RX3, 5.7 diesel GMs, 73 diesel Fords, 91 diesel dodge, 94 new Ram 1-ton and a 05 Hyundai Elantra. We still have the last one I was impressed enough to buy 3 more. My wish for GM is to have one unmolested V-8 without cylinder deactivation in a half ton.

    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
    • Probably not their first rodeo, so it should go as planned most likely.  Typically the service manager or tech doing the swap will put some seat time to shake it down after they get it all put back together.  We usually put 50-100mi before we hand them back so if something happens, its not after you get it.  A coolant leaks, oil leaks, a ground left off or loose, vibration, etc.     The new engines so far have been good?  There's been a couple that have popped out there again (the replacement engine) but most have been okay.
