03 chevy 2500hd 4x4 6.0l engine problem

Hello new to the forum, so giving it a try. First off I have a 03 Chevy Silverado 2500hd 4x4 with the 6.0L in it. Has 180000 miles on it. Been having a faint whinning noise under the front of it in the morning right at the torque converter, goes away when warms up, but also been having a hard shift when going into Passover gear, when in a hard pull or pulling trailer up hill.
But only does it going into passover. On saying all this got to looking at trucks history on car fax found that Mr Transmission had replaced the torque converter. So called a buddy of mine who works at another transmission shop and told him everything and he said sounds like they used wrong torque converter for my truck. Said need check it, but have never got around to it, due to health issues. Just been not pulling with it and not running it hard.
Well went on for a year now and when got in my truck last week drove 30 miles that day came home parked it. Went back out that night go to town and started it made a loud clank sound (like a gear or chain breaking) from under truck right in same spot where been hearing whinning noise. Sounded like metal on metal grinding after that. I turned it straight off was ran for no more then 2 mins. When try start it again the lights just dimmed. So thought starter, to cold, it raining fix it tomorrow.
Well next morning same thing. Took starter off tested good. Came back home hooked chain to truck pulled up hill. Started looking over everything, put bar on crank and nothing wouldn't move motor locked up. Never had problem with truck oil pressure or nothing, have always serviced it, just that whinning. 
Question is does it sound like locked up motor or can the torque converter be locked up keeping it from turning? Any help or advise would be great.

Yea I am at a loss. Drained oil today, didn't see any metal in it. Started take off the cover plate between motor and trans. Had to stop due to exhaust having to come lose and it started to rain.

Well took all plugs out today and there all clean and no signs of anything. Left them out to try turn motor over again and started raining.

ideas:
- These tranny's are electronically controlled with the computer using input from the road speed, engine speed and tps angle. If any of these sensors are off, you could get a poor shift point
- the tc is supposed to lockup in upper road speed range. May have problem with tc lockup valve.

 Yea  somethings deffinelty got it locked or jammed good. I got the cover plate off yesterday and don't see anything outside torque converter. Can't get to all coverter bolts to remove them. So thought about losing bolts on transmission, like suggested to motor and sliding it back, but didn't know if could get it back far enough without having drop everything. So started dropping oil pan on truck to look for anything on bottom end of motor, needed to replace oil pan gasket anyway looks like been leaking. That and if found anything in there I would have my answer. Bad weather coming in so might be couple days.

Any luck?I would think you could get it to turn with enough leverage,is fluid level high on tranny dipstick? front bushing on trans walked out,pump shattered?

Sorry havent got work on it pass couple of days been snowing and cold, got another bad storm coming in this weekend. But had a 7ft pipe on it altogether and didn't move at all. Started dropping oil pan but far as I've got with motor.

Well it's official motor locked up on it. Just got start working on it again. Hard believe locked up idling and gave no signs. New motor going in tomorrow ?.

Sorry ant had much time to work on the truck. The new motor I purchased with 115000 on it is bad also want hold oil pressure over 20 psi even with two new oil pumps and a manual gauge. So its going have to come out. I started tearing old motor down yesterday. Staring taking rods loose and when got to six it free up. I could turn the crank. All rod bearings full oil and main bearings looked good to. Found that the number six piston is hitting the counter weight on crankshaft, which is causing it not to turn. Don't see how could happened or what is causing it. Only seen this in builds but never a motor with180,000 on it.

Some weird luck and a crazy random issue caused the rod to bend like that.

Lol I would agree with that, some luck I am having with this truck. So you think rod some how bent? Waiting on a new one to compare it to. But something some how only made one rod short enough to hit counter weight on crankshaft.

Well been awhile got motor rebuilt, guy at machine shop couldn't find anything that would caused it. He said may have been a foul injector, but wasn't sure. Said only thing wrong with motor was bent rod number 6 cylinder and worn cam bearings. But now got a new problem. I'm about over this chevy.  Had running couple of weeks now. But drove it to town yesterday shut it off. Now want start, ant the motor lol. Want crank and starter want click. Turn key all lights come on and nothing.

    • Thanks; I looked there a few minutes, and I think I can find something. I really never looked there, as I thought it was stuff like PTO/aftermarket bodies/accessories like snow plows.
    • This is a 1/2 ton thing ONLY.  All HDs 2020-2026 have the two speed transfer case, with Autotrac as an option.     1/2 tons 2019-2026, regular 4x4s come with a single speed case (no 4LO!), and trucks with Z71 ordered, or all Trail Boss trucks come with the 2 speed case.  2 speed case is also an option on WT, and is also standard on High Country.  
    • 2013 5.3 still to this day calls for the PF48 filter.  Which as a 15psi bypass pressure.     There is a TSB, 17-NA-157 that talks about the PF-63 and PF-64 filters which have a higher bypass rating of 22psi.    TSB HERE - temp.xml   "Beginning in 2012, the oil pumps began to regulate main gallery feedback instead of pump out pressure. This means that the oil pump now does not begin to regulate until pressure is built up to the main gallery. This change reduces the amount of time it takes to provide oil to the engine bearing and lifters during extreme cold start conditions.  Main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are present on the following engine families which use Spin-on oil filters: Small Gas Engine (SGE), Large Gas Engine (LGE), High Feature (HFV6) Gen2 and Small Block Gen5 gasoline engines. These engines with the main gallery feedback oil pump control systems are factory built with an ACDelco® oil filters"   It also calls out what engines use those filters.  The gen 4 small blocks were not on that list (LMG, LC9, L9H, L92, L94, L20, L96).  Gen 5 small blocks use the higher pressure filter.          That all said...   Your 7045 Napa filter is the PF63 equivalent, with 22psi bypass.  You are already using the higher bypass pressure filter.  You CAN keep using it, you don't technically have to use it though.  
    • Do you know WHY the filter relief setting was increased to 22 psig?    When the new system goes into the second stage the pump volume ramps up considerably. It was found that the 15 psi filter bypass setting put the filter in bypass on a warm engine when the second stage was activated. Raising the filter bypass setting forced the filter to do what it designed to do. Filter. Preventing debris from circulating during high load, high rpm operation.    So next question is how did GM find this out? VLOM/lifter failures and a deep dive by Melling Corp.    Last question. Is it required? Look at it like this; a motor may be equipped with a rev limiter. But it only works if the set point in reached. That 22 psig setting only matters if the pressure differential across the filter media exceeds 15 psig during normal warm operation. Second stage kicks in around 3000-3500 rpm.    I can't answer your question because I don't know you and how you use the truck. But I think there is enough information here to let you decide for yourself. 😉
