Anyone know of any way to add wireless charging to the '19 RST or LT?  curious if maybe the module from the 16-18 would go under the cutout in the lid since there's no little shelf or whatever that is built into the center part where the wireless charging is on the ltz.

I did mine myself in center council of my 19 Trailboss. Went really well with a little work and some ingenuity! Cut apart a triple coil charger off eBay. Paid $12 for it a couple years ago and wasn't using it anymore. Opened up the bottom side of the lid, ground it out with a Dremel tool, glued the modified charger in place, ran a charging cable from the USB in the counsel to the charger thru the hinge, put it all back together and it works awesome. Radio has to have power to it for it to be on!

(I can only get 2 pics at a time to attach so it going to be a few post)

The factory chargers are weak and useless and unless in direct contact with the charger most will not charge through a rubber mat in a protective case.

No need to knock yourself out making modifications.

Easy peasy...under $30. ..Go to Amazon or EBay and get the full console or arm console insert tray and a wireless charger with USB pigtail. (Get a separate tray and charger...been there tried that, .the trays with a built-in charger are as crappy as the OEMs and need a sweet spot for charging and cannot charge through a protective case). Has an indicator light, but no need to even look when charging, a large sweet spot just throw the cell phone onto the tray pocket close the lid, leave it there and use the Bluetooth connection. In cae you forget to take it, it is in the console safe from prying eyes.

Was going with the before mentioned single coil disk.... But decided to step up my game to 5 coils!!!! ?

Will be installing tomorrow... Will report back.  Size is almost the exact same size as the phone tray in center console, so should work beautifully.  Going to tie the power into the rear 12v.

Here's the part I used:

Getting the cover off this larger one was infinity easier than the small disc one.

Great find, I put a 3 coil one in my center console, works well but wider coverage area for different sized phones would be perfect.   Looks like it will fit

Fit was perfect... Epoxy is drying now.  Then have to do the wiring.  Will post complete install pics later this evening.

This is how I decided to do it for now. Want to wire it in so I don't lose the USB port on the dash.

Some pics of the install today.  Epoxy isn't pretty, but can't see it at least.  Drimmel made short work of the plastic tabs.  Wired into 12v at rear.  Works good.  Size is perfect.

Looks good, The 3 coil is working but I’m glad I didn’t glue it in, because I’m going to switch to this 5 coil version!

Which wires did you hard wire too?

tapped into the 12v outlet wires, to get more power.  It's always hot, but shouldn't be drawing any power unless something is charging on it.

you 100% sure on that?

Even if there is any power draw, I'm pretty sure it would be minimal.  I mean it would just be keeping power supplied to the pad.  If nothing is on the pad drawing power, then I don't see how there would be any significant power draw.   I mean if you keep a car charger or radar detector plugged into the 12v 24/7 do you really think it's drawing enough power to affect anything?  The original guy in this thread did the same thing in September, he hasn't complained.  I guess time will tell, but I'm not worried.

It depends on the charging pad and the electronics it has.  And cheaper pads will have cheaper electronics...

With a charger that you plug in, it's fairly straightforward to tell if something is plugged in to it, and make it so it draws little to no power when nothing is plugged in.

With a wireless charging pad, it is not easy to determine that something is there to receive the wireless power.  And most of these installs put the charging pad underneath something else so it can't be seen, so they can't use a microswitch to tell if something is placed on the pad (it either doesn't get pressed, or is pressed all the time from whatever is between the phone and the pad).

Did you install the charger with the coils exposed or did you put it all back together and then install? Did the bottom of the console lid go back over top of the charger once you had it glued in or no? Sorry,.. really want to do this but also nervous about taking a dremel to my brand new truck.

Yes, I installed with coils exposed, and the cover went back on, just fine.  The area you drimmel out has nothing holding the cover in place, so doesn't effect anything.  Hardest part is epoxying the thing in place.

Since I guess it's been a couple of weeks now, have you noticed any drain on your battery that would be more than leaving a phone charging inside? I would like to run it hot and I hate that the USB won't charge my phone with the engine off.. which is a terrible design flaw if you ask me. I'd like to be able leave the phone on the console and have it charging while I'm at work.

    • That makes sense, and I think you are describing the real product problem. Capturing data is the easy part. If the owner or technician has to manually dig through five minutes of millisecond-level logs, the product has already failed. The device would be at the ECM harness, not at the OBD port, so I agree that data retrieval and event marking need to be thought through carefully. The way I am thinking about the architecture is: The recorder itself should not depend on a phone, app, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, or cloud connection to capture the event. It should always keep a local rolling buffer and lock the event locally. A button, phone app, or small cabin device would only act as an event marker. If the driver feels a stumble and presses the button 10–30 seconds later, the pre-buffer has to already contain the useful data. For data retrieval, the practical options would be a sealed service USB lead, Wi-Fi download, or a phone/cabin companion device. I would not expect the owner to remove the ECM-side module or work with raw files directly. The cloud or AI side would be for interpretation, not for capturing the event. The truck may have no connection when the issue happens, so the evidence has to be saved locally first. After that, cloud processing could help decode the data, compare it against baselines, and generate a readable report. For the first version, I would keep the automatic triggers conservative and objective: driver event marker bus-off error passive voltage drop / brownout device reset FIFO or queue overflow a normally periodic message disappearing side-to-side communication mismatch, if the topology supports that For “learning normal,” I agree with your point, but I would not want to overclaim it as automatic root-cause diagnosis at first. A realistic first step would be learned baseline comparison for that specific vehicle and operating condition. For example, a value would only be compared against similar conditions: RPM range load / MAP throttle position gear / vehicle speed coolant and oil temperature battery voltage AFM/DFM state, if decoded and validated Then the report could flag things like: this periodic message disappeared compared with its normal timing this value deviated from this vehicle’s normal range under similar conditions the same abnormal pattern repeated after the same type of event the anomaly occurred together with voltage, oil-pressure, misfire, or communication changes But I would still call that “abnormal pattern detected,” not “replace this part,” unless there is enough validated repair data behind it. So the intended product would not be “here is a huge log.” It would need to be an event package: what triggered the capture how much pre/post data was preserved what changed before and after the event whether the device itself reset, overflowed, or saw a bus error selected graphs around the event raw data only as supporting evidence From your perspective, what would make this kind of report useful instead of just another datalog? For example: What are the top 5 parameters or events you would want highlighted first? Would you trust a learned baseline for that specific vehicle, or would you prefer fixed thresholds? How much false-positive flagging would be acceptable before you stopped looking at the reports? What would a one-page report need to show for an independent shop to take it seriously? For misfire, AFM/DFM, oil pressure, or U-code complaints, what would you want the tool to flag automatically?
