Scared of the K2

I suggest buying a clean used Chevy or GMC , prior to the direct injection switch 2010-2014.... those older 6.0L port injection motors are simple and bulletproof.  lots of hotrodders yank out the LY6 motor at the junkyard and bolt in a big turbo to crank out over 1000hp with stock parts that have over 250,000 miles on them!!!

 

i'm not sure but i think the new 2019 trucks have even more drive by wire controls on board. something like electronic brakes, or that might be the 2020 model ...its all a nightmare  

 

I own a 2016 Silverado, i like it, and it's built better than the previous trucks the K2 has a very nice interior compared to the GMT800. i also own a 2500 HD Sierra 2012,  and i really like the power band of the older 6.0 motor more than the 5.3 truck.  the old 6.0L is so torque that its just relaxing to drive, the new 5.3 is very powerful but it has to rev higher, thus more strenuous in heavy traffic.

 

 

if i was to do it again I would buy a work truck version on the Silverado or Sierra, just because i don't need all the gadgets, and i like a stealth white paint job!

I have a '15 GMC Sierra SLE.  It is "beautiful" and is the most reliable, trouble free truck I've owned and I've owned many.  My first was a 2 year old '69 F100 and have had a 1/2 ton as my daily driver since then.  Lemons happen but follow the tips suggested by the other members and you will find a truck you will be proud to own.  My 4.3 also gets me to 45 in a hurry!

I re-read your post but what I missed was....the why.

Why do you want a truck? For what purpose, because that can drive your decision.

I have one for three reasons. Work use, boat hauling and I'm a truck guy period.

So...flyingfool is on point with his suggestions. Buying used is a science that can get you a good deal if you have the time, knowledge and money.

 

Time to look. No rush or need to purchase.

 

Knowledge of product. This includes knowing what you want the truck to do as well as all the things about the model you're looking to buy but with the realization you will be fixing stuff sooner than later. 

 

Money in hand either cash or finance. 

 

Nothing wrong with buying new either but it seems sticker shock has a detrimental effect on some members when new doesn't turn out to be perfect.

Thanks for all the feed back, deff easses my mind a little. Still lots of research to be done, and see what kind of deals I can find. If I could get into a 2019 for around 40-45k, I would do it....Love the larger back seat, and the tailgate.... but also seeing the price tag on a 2016-2018 SLT premium around 35k makes me smile too, and my kids won't know the difference in the back seat right?!?!?......Im the type of person the drives a vehicle into the ground, so I just want to make the right decision.

So they are out there for what you want to pay I’m sure these are “regional prices” so depending on where you are these prices will eventually get to you. If you want to be a Guinea pig for the new ones IMO I’d be more scared of that than the known issues on a K2. Don’t know your situation but I don’t put many miles on so I might lease my next truck if I ever upgrade again for two years if I can get a deal then buy it outright after the lease if I still like/want it and it ain’t a ?. It will cost me more but I figure it’s the easiest way to get out of it without losing my azz if need be?

The 2014-2018’s already proven drivetrains, 2019’s you’ll be a guinea pig testing them out for GM. I had the option and chose the GMC 1500 CC 6.2 specifically for that reason. I’m enjoying it so much that I’ve installed over $10K on a custom lift, coil overs, piggybacks, wheels, tires and lots of extras. Getting into a new redesigned vehicles lots of times brings new problems that will most likely be reengineered again in order to remedy existing issues, just how it works, your choice. Btw, I’ve owned lots of 5.3’s and 6.2’s, the 5.3 is a good motor but the 6.2 out tows and definitely out performs it, with better gas mileage. Draw back is spending a little extra at the pump requiring super. Buying a specific truck model for me is having the most capable power train available for that model. The good thing is that you’re looking at GM trucks.

Iv always owned a truck for work for 40 years. During that time I was envious of my wife see got to drive performance cars. Trucks have come a long ways and I have one for truck things.It happens to be high performance. If you need to have a truck, get one. For less money you can buy a car that is cheaper, faster, better gas mileage, doesn't move around when a semi goes by. I would rent different rides during the weekend, see if you really want a truck. Your on a site that's all about trucks, their going to say drive a truck, no shxt. The clowns on here are going to say buy a Denali. For that kind of money your in the real fancy car territory. Your in the certified pre owned exotic car territory.

You should be scared of any brand this day and age. Prices have skyrocketed and quality has gone downhill across the board.

Bottom line is follow your gut and let your conscious be your guide. Every truck brand out there has its fair share of issues and annoyances.

The difference is in finding one that has the fewest.

My '14 Sierra is not perfect. On the other hand I have never once wished I was in a different truck or brand since owning it.

No, the 5.3 is not a deal breaker. Unless you tow quite a bit or want to drag race stop light to stop light.

2018 is the best year of the K2 they got the bugs out by then which is true with the last year of any generation .

I have two 2018 Silverados and couldn't be happier.

OP, 2014-2018 trucks are going for huge discounts, buying a Denali or an SLT 6.2 at almost the same price as a 5.3 is a no brainer, you’d have to be an old idiot not to see it, well worth it especially on performance and resale. 6.2’s are hot commodities especially since the newly redesigned units have same HP but with a bit less torque. The accessories available for these 14-18 trucks are endless too. Btw, only the high end models on the 19’s get the synthetic 350 lbs lighter beds with mechanical tail gates.

Had a Spec sheet of what I wanted on truck.  Salesman had nothing on lot exactly to match found one 1,000 miles away.  1 week later it was shined up and ready for pickup?  Drove away 79K later the thing is absolute PEACH.  I really like the K2's and Ecotec engines! Simple,easy to fix/maintain and efficient too.

As others have said, test drive, get it out on the highway as well to make sure no shaking at higher speeds, check out the carfax and  you should be good to go!  I traded my 15 Ram Sport in a month ago for a lightly used  low miles 17 LTZ Z71 and love it so far!  Prior to the Ram I always had chevys/gmcs, so really wanted to get back in a chevy truck.  I did look at the F150s, they looked pretty cool but for some reason I just never felt comfortable in them, and one kinda random thing I didnt like on the f150 was, I ride with my arm on the window sill alot, and for some reason maybe the shape of their front window but my arm would kinda fall off and didn't feel natural while driving like chevy and ram.  I did look at the 19s and like them, was set on a double cab but ended up getting a crew cab when I saw my truck I was in love!   Good luck with the search, lots of great deals out there on new 18s as well as used 16-18 models.

My boss just purchased an '18 Silverado LTZ Z71 and he has the "chevy shake" between 70-80mph.

So looks like they are still out there.

Nothing bad he reports. 

My '14 had the same shake/vibration until I retorqued the leaf spring bolts to 80ft/lb.

Look at RAM and Ford forums. They also shake as well.

Yesterday you made a post about being augmented, so this is not that but a request for clarification. You stated the the 6.2 model SLT or Denali has a high resale value. Then you stated you can buy one for the same price as a 5.3. model. That would tell the op the opposite. Unless you mean a new 5.3. I’ve seen SLT loaded with the 5.3 new between 32K-34K. So are you advising the OP to buy a used truck just for the engine with no warranty or telling him somehow the 5.3 is actually worth more. Curiously lurking.

I often see this message on this forum but fortunately has not been my experience.  Hopefully others have positive experiences.  Truck prices have gone up over the years but my salary/ability to pay has increased at an equal or better rate.  I also have not experienced the out of warranty repairs on my 2000+ model year trucks like I did in the previous decades.  I know that comparing trucks of the past is not relevant to Op's concerns.  However, imo,  it is as good as a time or better than ever to buy a new or CPO truck.
