Towing Maximum

I recently purchased a 2017 2500 diesel GMC Sierra Denali. I also own a 40 ft 5th wheel with a dry weight of 12,700. The truck has a recommeded maximum towing of 13,500. Once we load up our truck and 5th wheel, we will be over the towing maximum. What type of damages could I be facing to the truck?

How's your pin weight %, and how does that weight compare to payload remaining after loading the truck?

iirc, usually for 5th wheel it's recommended that pin weight be 15 to 25% of total.

15% of 14,000 = 2100

25% of 14,000 = 3500

 

4x4 Dmax 2500 Denali payload - 2513 lb (passengers and cargo reduce this amount)

4x4 Dmax 3500 Denali 6.5' payload - 3927 lb; 17,200 towing

The 4x4 version will be  4930 pay and 22,700 towing;

 

Probably you'll also be asked how far, how fast and how often -- and what type of terrain.

I have an older 2500 that has a max tow of 14,9.  funny how newer ones have less.  Anyway, my 40' toyhauler says 12,3 dry and I've had it to 15,9 fully loaded with fuel tank, water, etc.  I was over the max tow, right on max of truck payload, and not over GCWR.  I would not have felt comfortable if I didn't have an exhaust brake for hills but otherwise it pulled just fine.  When I've had to go across mountain pass then I would drain the fuel/water to get closer to max.  If I was pulling often then I might reconsider but we're fair weather summer campers so the amount of time has been minimal.

Did your numbers for the DMax Denali 2500 come off of a door tag? What cab/bed configuration? My 2018 2500 AllTerrain HD crew cab, regular bed diesel has a payload of only 1,984lb. I can’t imagine a Denali being any higher; the 2017 I looked at sure wasn’t.

What, wait, your diesel can only put just under 2,000 lbs in the bed? Wow, I’m good for 3,000 in my DC gasser.

Those are from the charts in the 'fleet order guide' numbers.

Options will reduce /change the numbers, but they are from the Denali specific chart. (since that is what OP was asking about and it also makes 15/25/35 comparisons e easier) 

 

Mine is 10,000 GVWR with 2138 lb on door sticker. 

It has LT265/70R18ES tires (optional on 2500 Denali, with has standard 20" wheel/tire

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling. 
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built. 
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
