So I currently have about 1300 miles on my AT4 3 weeks into ownership and somehow, based on the brake pad sensors in the truck, I have gone through 20% of the pads life (I have not checked this by other methods yet) . I don't brake hard, haven't towed yet and haven't been in stop and go traffic at all. Is anyone else running into this? Not sure if anyone else is experiencing this or if they are hitting a point where the pads are not losing mass so quickly due grooving with the rotors.

The dealer is supposed to reset all of those monitors when you purchase the truck, just reset it and start from there.

It was at 100% with 10 miles on it when purchases. You think it should be reset and could just be an error?

Ahhh..., I didn't realize that part, Hmmm...., Well, I do a lot of stop and go traffic driving, some hard stops at times (as per the My Chevrolet App) and I've got 5200 miles on it and mine shows 85% pad life left.

I would guess it's all software. I doubt they have a sensor to monitor brake pads. Do yourself a favor and just turn off that page in the DIC and check your brakes at 30k miles.

My loaner truck which I got at 6 miles had 300 miles on it and had already "used" 4% of the brake pads and I drive mostly highway

It’s one of those things that was never checked maybe during break in the pads wear more. We lived for years without it, personally I will monitor mine but not freak out it’s kinda like the OLM nice to have but is it accurate.

Case in point on my Camaro in 976 miles on the current oil change my OLM was at 29% this spring when I did the oil change. Head scratcher as the oil looked real good still visually (car only has 1400 miles total). No idea why it dropped so much but I’m not worried about it

Most likely set by GM for running to 0% at specified operation etc. with everything figured in....those who tow, those who drive cities, mountains etc.  So they basically want you checking the pads etc. at specified intervals instead of waiting for the "NOISE" etc.

Unless they’ve changed the pads they should last a long long time. My ‘14 has 88k miles and I just recently replaced rear pads and front pads are still original

There IS a sensor on these, it’s not just calculated by driving style. They use resistance wires built into pads that the truck reads. I have heard others saying the system doesn’t seem to be all that accurate so take it with a grain of salt.

 

There is an option to turn the monitor off, beyond just hiding the page, which is necessary if you run aftermarket pads that don’t have the sensors in them.

yup, a complex solution to a simple item (metal tabs on the brakes that rub when low)....ignore it for the most part, just check your pads when ya rotate.  BTW 600 Mi, 99% for mine.

Any chance you smell the brake burning when you park? Many years ago, I had one brake stuck.. but that was 30 years ago.

You got me going outside to check.. I have 1,900 miles and I'm showing 99%. Pretty much in line wit what I'd expect since I treat my brakes like kryptonite.. I only hit it when I have to. I'm a dedicated hypermiler, I drive carefully to maximize my gas mileage. Been able to get 24 lately, not bad for an RST with a V8, but that's all highway.

I’m at 7800 miles, with a good bit of stop n go driving an I have 79% in the front and 88% in the rear. I too have not checked this by any other method. 

 

Id say 20% in 1300 miles is a bit off.

Wow. A sensor? I stand corrected. That is crazy. Maybe that is why the calipers are bigger on the T1s? I am sure everything will be twice as expensive to replace.

I would rather have adjustable brake pedals than engineering spent on a brake sensor that doesn't work

    • are there any codes? with lots of rust, perhaps disconnect/clean both sides of the connection/examine cable ends (the wires) for corrosion going into the sheath & replace if necessary/reconnect ALL the power AND ground cables between the battery, engine, frame, cab, fuse box and starter charm.li (website) has a no-start diagnostic procedure you can work through to get it working.
    • Its no wonder you've gravitated to the oil types and brands you have in later years after trying certain brands and one being a specialty oil or at least very hard to come by up here and the other would have been a commonly found oil of the era and the vastly different outcomes as a result to using the vehicles in question the same distance for an OCI . It shows what marketing hype can do without actually having the product to back up the claims and that is no different now with the insane claims that are written on the side of a bottle of oil from some of the off the shelf oils.    What has surprised me and I was already finding this out before I bought my truck with the GDI engine, that this newer fancy technology that seemingly would suggest better fuel economy/emissions with this high pressure spray of fuel is not in reality kind at all to the engine or at least the oils life. Yet they insist on claiming long OCI with this technology just like they did with the port or similar type fuel injection systems when in reality its a step back in oil life to have a GDI system.    I think the mistake your making Grumpy is that your not sending your samples to Blackstone and getting the feel good glowing report that you can run it another 1000 or more miles and then send another sample where they say run it yet another 1000 miles and on and on it goes until your sending in something that looks a lot like road tar and then they may suggest you change your oil within the next 1000 miles 😆
    • I am guessing that engines of that design back then had a better ability to be abused and survive longer than a new design engine with the long timing chain and the overhead cams and phasers etc. But I would never guess that an engine could go that far and not fail spectacularly or at least die a slow death. 
    • In the 80's 90's I'd run Honda's 7,500 miles between changes using Red Line HP 5W20 and do it for hundreds of thousands of miles with issues. Back in the day it was an SAE 20 with the HTHS of a SAE 30 and SN add load. It was also very polar. Oxidation VOA was over 120. Besides those motors were SPFI and lean burn tech. I could have likely run it longer but never did.    We had a Toyota bought new I ran on Pennzoil's latest and greatest synthetic of the day with "Penthane". A made up word for a very low dose of PAO. Tried 7,500 mile OCI's in that Group III/VI chemistry and the rings tapped out at 90K. Rocker box wasn't as bad as the one Punch put up but it wasn't good either. Also a SPFI motor.    I'm around 3,750 across the board on these GDI monsters and the oil it tapped out by then usually on TBN/TAN crossover and color. Red Line HP Euro.    The AMSOIL SS brochures tell you to follow the OEM values for the service class but that it can be run up to 25K if monitored. I can't imagine what motor could go that distance and not tap out. I've never owned one.    Yes, I know. Lot's of people do. I'm just not going to be one of them. 
    • I knew a guy in the early 80's that bought a new Monte Carlo and ran it a 100,000 miles without ever changing the filter or the oil. Just kept adding. It looked like that inside.
