I don't get the hoopla over super cruise.  Hoping some people here can enlighten me.  The commercial shows that I can tap along with the music with 2 hands, but that doesn't seem like a big deal to me.  I just don't get in what situation I would ever use it.  Perhaps I could starting smoking, eating, texting, and drinking in my vehicle.  I know how to pass with a trailer (rarely happens, since I'm driving slow).  Some examples of how super cruise will make the driving experience better would be appreciated.  Also, any thoughts on future software updates possibly enhancing super cruise (so I can take a nap while driving, which would be really sweet).

Personally, I think the tech is pretty cool. But this is just the next incremental step to fully autonomous driving imo.

No thanks, I like driving not being chauffeured around.  In the past 20 years I have used cruise control maybe 10 times.  Those were mostly situations when my butt or leg went to sleep from being in one position for too long.

I am still pissed that I cannot change my own gears or even spin the tires without turning off traction control.  I would be glad to pay a few grand to trade autostop and cruise control for a 6 speed manual transmission and a tailgate with a real handle.

I used to drive back and forth to Vegas, but I hate the long drive. The company wants me to return. The pay is incredible but I will not consider driving back and forth to Vegas anymore. The Supercruise just may make it possible for me to seriously reconsider that.

After Supercruise (which only works on mapped highways) they are releasing 'Ultra Cruise'.

Presumably there will be different/additional hardware.

It's still expected to have situations where the driver needs to take over.

Maybe someday there will be one that will let you sleep -- but sounds like UltraCruise isn't it either.

WARREN, Mich. – Today, General Motors unveiled Ultra Cruise, an all-new, advanced driver-assistance technology and significant next step in the company's journey to enable its goal of zero crashes, zero emissions and zero congestion. Designed to ultimately enable hands-free driving in 95 percent of all driving scenarios, Ultra Cruise eventually can be used on every paved road in the U.S. and Canada.

Ultra Cruise will cover more than 2 million miles of roads at launch in the United States and Canada, with the capacity to grow up to more than 3.4 million miles. Customers will be able to travel truly hands free with Ultra Cruise across nearly every road including city streets, subdivision streets and paved rural roads, in addition to highways.

“Ultra Cruise is not just a game changer in terms of what it enables − a door-to-door hands-free driving experience − but a technological one as well," said Doug Parks, GM executive vice president of Global Product Development, Purchasing and Supply Chain. “It's been developed completely in-house.”

GM’s two hands-free advanced driver-assist systems will coexist in the company’s lineup with Super Cruise available on more mainstream vehicles and Ultra Cruise reserved for premium entries.

“The combination of Ultra Cruise for premium offerings and Super Cruise for lower-cost products will enable us to offer driver-assist technology across price points and segments,” said Parks.

System capabilities

Ultra Cruise is powered by a 5-nanometer, scalable compute architecture future-proofed through the Ultifi software platform and Vehicle Intelligence Platform. Ultra Cruise can add features, functions and services over time through frequent over-the-air updates.

Ultra Cruise builds on the capabilities of Super Cruise with new automated driving features intended to:

  • Provide users with information based on their experience with the system through an all-new dynamic display
  • React to permanent traffic control devices
  • Follow internal navigation routes
  • Maintain headway; follow speed limits
  • Support automatic and on-demand lane change
  • Support left and right-hand turns
  • Support close object avoidance
  • Support parking in residential driveways

The system also features full 360-degree perception around the vehicle.

Smart diagnostic and learning systems automatically identify scenarios where Ultra Cruise needs upgrading, triggering data recordings in vehicles equipped with the service. These recordings will then be processed through GM’s back office data ecosystem for continuous improvement of the system.

Ultra Cruise components

Ultra Cruise works through a combination of cameras, radars and LiDAR, developing accurate, 360-degree, three-dimensional statistical representations of the environment surrounding vehicles with redundancies in critical areas. Ultra Cruise also incorporates an integrated LiDAR behind the windshield.

“We believe that the combination of different sensors, or sensor fusion, leads to the most robust hands-free driver-assist system for our customers,” said Parks.

Human-Machine Interface (HMI)

A key component of Ultra Cruise is its Human Machine Interface, through which the system presents information to the driver and communicates when they need to be in control of the vehicle. Building on the HMI currently used in Super Cruise, Ultra Cruise’s HMI also shows drivers that they and the system are seeing the same thing.

The primary HMI in Ultra Cruise-equipped vehicles, the Ultra Cruise Dynamic Display, is a freeform display directly in the driver’s line of sight. It’s designed to help drivers stay focused on the road.

Ultra Cruise’s HMI strategy also includes helping the driver to stay engaged behind the wheel, ready to take over if required. Super Cruise’s Driver Attention Camera system will be carried over to Ultra Cruise.

GM is also developing an Ultra Cruise app that will be viewable in the center display of Ultra Cruise-equipped vehicles only when the vehicle is parked. The app will provide more centrally located information, including driver’s statistics, trips and history.

Ultra Cruise will join GM’s lineup of hands-free advanced driver-assist systems on select models in 2023, with Cadillac being the first to introduce the technology.

Always pay attention while driving and when using Ultra Cruise and Super Cruise. Do not use a hand-held device. For Super Cruise, visit cadillac.com/supercruise for compatible roads and full details.  More details about Ultra Cruise will be available closer to launch.

Read the fine print "for compatible roads".  In order to operate Super Cruise, you must have an active and eligible GMC Connected Services plan. Super Cruise vehicles are also connected to OnStar® Emergency Services, so Emergency-Certified OnStar Advisors can assist drivers should they become nonresponsive while Super Cruise is active.

Screw all that fancy technology stuff when I get in my truck I want to drive it and not have a computer do things for me, all that crap is for is people can say "hey look what this truck can do" who gives a $hit. Like the GM commercial when the guy takes his hands off the wheel and start clapping playing handzees with himself and the woman next to him, you still have to watch were you're going so why not just have your hand on the damn steering wheel.

Our 2020 Equinox has that lane assist crap which I have turned off, I was playing with it one day going down the road and the road was straight it worked for a little then started over correcting like I was drunk driving, so I took over and re-engaged going straight same thing but then the road markings got light like worn out and the damn thing didn't see them and started going off the damn road.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of people who do not appreciate the freedom and responsibility of driving, and would prefer someone else, or a machine, do it for them. Or they think their time is worth more than paying attention on a monotonous drive.

I want absolutely nothing to do with it. Machines sometimes do things better than humans can, and I don't care. I prefer to drive my own vehicle.

I think it’s a very cool invention!  But like a few others have stated. I BUY a vehicle to DRIVE IT myself!  I love being in control of my life when I’m driving. I don’t feel as comfortable when I’m a passenger. Especially when I’m in an airplane!  Drives me crazy!!
GM should have invested more $$$ in supercharging their Trucks and SUVs. That’s what I would pay a little extra money for……more POWER, not this.

My wife’s CRV has lane keep, adaptive cruise. Among other electronic goodies. There’re  more of a pain than help. The adaptive cruise if there’s a turn lane it will cause sudden braking if a car hasn’t quite cleared the stripe. The extra electronics is just more stuff to cause problems.

I like the adaptive cruise on my girl's Corolla for when I am not in a hurry. It is nice because it helps me go a bit slower around town.

I just took my first road trip with that car and the adaptive cruise is awful for traveling down the highway fast. I don't want to get in the left lane too early but it basically forces you to.

Most people that get the super cruise option on there vehicle will probably not keep it past the trail period. It is going to require a subscription to use like Onstar. I don't know many people at all that still have onstar past the trail.

Old school. I will drive the vehicle, not the vehicle drive me. Cruise control is enough. Rarely get to use it now.

Thanks for voicing your thoughts everyone.  It appears members of this forum are generally not fans of super cruise.  I like the adaptive cruise control in our VW Golf.  But I drive 95% of the time on rural roads, with very little traffic.  I do think the technology is very cool, but not useful for me and not something I would pay for.
