The filter clogs at 3K?

I don't buy it.

Maybe earlier depending on where and how you drive and how old your engine is. Yesterday I replaced the filter in my 2007 Cobalt with 5000 Kms ( 3000 miles ) on the clock, oil monitor read 54% and that filter weighed a ton and I'm sure it must have been plugged tight. It had a nice tar finish on the fins so I know no oil was going through that filter. Installed a new filter and topped off the oil and should be good till I change it around 10%.

You'll have to post some proof. I find it hard to believe that my mobil 1 full synthetic that's rated for 15k miles and it's matching oil filter only last 3k. The only reason we have this 3k oil change thing now days is because of the quick oil change stores. They manufactured the idea to grow thier business and the car companies bought in because it helped thier pockets too. But hell almost any newer vehicle now comes with full synthetic or a mix and a 7-10k oil change schedule.

3k mile oil changes were common practice long before anyone ever heard of the term "quick lube shop". In the days before synthetics it was just good practice to get the most miles out of your engine.

 

These days with government breathing down the necks of auto manufacturers, they design engines that would grenade in just a few miles running on the oil of the 70's and back. I've heard of a few Toyotas plugging up the oil system in less than 5k miles in the past - I don't doubt it could happen to any one of the hundreds of models of motor vehicles out there today.

 

Using crap components is another issue - my Silverado's engine, for example, has been bathed in synthetic oil since it hit 2k miles. Been running Amsoil Signature Series since it had 40k on the clock. Last 2 oil analysis showed high levels of iron and aluminum ( rings and pistons ). I'm using the best oil on the market, with the best filters, and changing it FAR under the recommended interval for synthetic oil, yet, the pistons and rings are wearing at an alarming rate. That's just the result of another GM cheapout.

 

Wouldn't surprise me in the least if some corner was cut on the Cobalt engine that's causing a sludge issue ...

Oil sludge is a real issue for some engines. In years past, Toyota, Honda, and Dodge/Chrysler have had major issues. Just do an internet search. In these situations, 3000k mile oil changes was strongly recommended, even with full synthetic and a premium filter.

I change the oil on my Cadillac every 3k miles. I know it's gross overkill, but she runs like a BEAST, doesn't burn a drop of oil, and the valvetrain is quiet.

 

Now on my Chevrolet, I'll be going with 5K intervals. I've generally been able to hit that, and it will get better now that i will be doing it myself. It will be interesting to see what the filter looks like.

Longest I've gone on Amsoil was just over 9,500 miles. Oil itself was fine, as the TBN indicates, but the iron and aluminum were getting up there ...

 

After I switched to 10w-30, things got ALOT better:

Part of that was crappy filters (Honda, combined with people literally thinking hondas don't need maintenance)and poor engine design(Toyota, oil passages were too small, people literally thinking Toyotas don't need maintenance). Honda filters have VERY low capture efficiency (and everyone now has long oil change intervals to lower cost of ownership for the initial surveys on new cars). Lots of Honda fanboys can't see the forest from the trees and don't correlate that with VTECH part failure due to sludge because "Honda is the largest Engine manufacturer in the world, their requirements can't be wrong.

 

 

Yes, they are reliable, but there is usually one major component failure linked to any given generation. 8th gen Accords: VTECH failure, 6th gen Accords: transmission failure. Guess what maintenance intervals were extended on the given generation from previous years?

 

On my 9th, after reading up on the 50% rating on the A01 and A02 filters, and signs of the same VTECH issues as the 8th(may just be your usually lemon parts, but too early to tell), I decided to use synthetic rated high efficiency filters. Can't hurt, IMO.

 

One thing though, when I finally had a serious buyer look at my wife's Corolla, a Toyota with Maintenance records is an easy sell.
