2012 Sierra 6.2 engine oil disappeared, no warranty?

Truck has 38xxx km... Was headed out to Jasper, AB to go snowboarding this weekend. I checked the oil before i left too, made sure it was full. Prob 3k since last oil change.

 

4 of us loaded up headed there in -30*C. Truck started making ticking noises between Edson and Hinton, which got louder(within 2mins) as i slowly watched the oil pressure drop. Pulled over, and shut the truck off. Smelled burnt oil as soon as i hopped out... I popped the hood and checked the oil, none left. Whole bottom of my truck was covered in oil. Ended up getting towed to a dealership in Edson, AB. Bannister GM. They looked at it today. I talked to their service rep and she said they couldn't find where the oil exploded from. But then said they ran a dye test and the filter had a small leak? I looked underneath while waiting in the freezing cold for the tow truck, and the filter was completely dry, as was the drain plug. So how does all my oil leak out of the filter??? She then proceeded to tell me there is definite engine damage and since I didn't use an AC Delco oil filter that any work would NOT be under warranty. WTF

 

I change the oil myself every 5000-6000km(even though it's said synthetic will last over 10000km). I've used all dexos approved oil, either Mobil 1 or Castrol syntec full synthetic. I've used AC Delco, K&N, fram synthetic filters. Everything is documented in my owners manual and have reciepts at home. Truck has never burned any oil either. Every oil change the level on the dipstick is the same as when I put fresh stuff in. I take pride in knowing how to do maintainence on a damn vehicle, have been my whole life. Easy stuff like oil changes, air filters, plugs, wires, etc... to pulling engines, swapping trannies, transfer cases, clutches, all that shit. But blaming an oil filter that's been fine for over 3000kms prior... REALLY GM?

 

She asked if the service manager can call me as he wants to talk. I said yes, i want to talk to him as well! I'm still waiting for a phone call....

 

Anyone have any thoughts here? Not impressed right now!

Sounds like they are giving you a line of bs. How can they not find the leak? Clean it all off fill it to the approximate level start and it see where it is leaking..lol

 

Ive seen oil filters come loose but that usually happens if it wasn't tight to begin with...you said you did all your own work yourself so I'm sure you had it on there tight.

 

If they won't cover it take it to another dealer, or if worse comes to worse you might have to take it to court. We have a 2012 chrysler 200 at are shop that heater core is clogged(getting no heat) with 38k factory warranty is 36k. Also they have an extended warranty that will not cover anything. A lot of these warrantys are a joke.

Ya the truck hasn't leaked anything ever. I changed the oil over 3000km ago. Level was the same when I checked before our trip. Can't believe they're tryin to blame the filter. Funny I still haven't got a phone call back either..

So the filter had a leak in it? Was it a Fram by any chance?

can't remember if K&N or Fram. have to check the book, which is at the dealership.

I'd definitely look at the filter closely. I saw a Fram blow out on the 2006 cummins, very small pinhole. The oil sprayed all over the engine bay, trailer, everything. I've always thought they were trash, that just kind of reinforced it.

 

Hopefully it isn't the filter. If it is you're probably SOL.

Yea just thought of this too... I never saw any warning lights in the dash.. Shouldn't I have seen a low oil level warning message before I noticed the pressure dropping?

Tgis is exactly why I rake mt trucks ti tge dealer for all oil changes. One you can't beat a 38 dollar dexos oil change with tire rotation and car wash. Dealers typically push full synthetic and dont list dexos oil price on their "display". I use to do all my own service, but on my 2008 mazda 3 when my door solenoids went out just past my warranty they rep told me if I have let the dealer do all my service they would have good willed the repair for me. Not to mention I do not feel like keeping all my reciepts if it ever comes to question if my trucks were properly maintained.

You were using a FRAM Ultra filter, which in my opinion, blows the ACdelco and many others out of the water. Yes, I agree, the cheap frams are worth their weight in dirt, but the ultras are one of the best filters on the market I have 250k on my burban and have always used them. That dealer is so full of sh**, the filter is bone dry. Call your regional GM reps, you should not pay for this out of pocket it is coming off the right side of the engine, as you can see the pass. side cat is wet. There is nothing over there that could be your fault. I'm not sure about Canada, but here in the US, it is illegal for an auto company to void a warranty for not using their maintenance products as long as the ones you use are up to spec, which was what yours were. I would tell that dealer to f*** off, the oil filter theory was to make money off of you. KEEP THESE PICTURES!!!

Very easy for GM or any brand to claim a filter doesn't meet specification. I don't know how Canadian laws work for this but if it's the same arbitration process we get you'll have a tough time winning, right or wrong.

when I bought the truck brand new i specifically asked at the dealership about oil changes since i like doing them myself. i was told as long as you document everything and keep receipts you're fine... what a smack in the face

They can't void a warranty just because its not a specific brand of filter LOL. They just hoping you will pay..

 

The guy who says he lets dealers do the work because of some fable about a goodwill repair... The money saved from doing your own repairs/service would have paid for those parts SMH

 

I used to let a dealer do oil change for life on my truck shortly after they realised I was doing all my own work on the other maintenance things that would have had me paying them actual money they started doing a bad job, F-Dealers IMO

 

I took my truck to a random dealer for a warranty repair they just kept going on about how I would have to pay probably, too bad I was smarter then the service rep and knew exactly what was wrong.

Talked to the service manager, gave him a rundown of what happened. Still says they can't find a point of failure so can't process a warranty claim... Figures the cold weather might have something to do with it since the truck is in the warm shop now. Hes asking GM canada what to do next... No mention of the brand of oil filter now. Which is good.. Fingers crossed

 

I still don't understand why I had no warnings or msg in the dash tho..
