2012 Sierra 6.2 engine oil disappeared, no warranty?

Was the filter loose? Or was the filter itself leaking? If the filter itself is the problem then your are going to go back on the mfg. of the filter if you have engine damage. Just because there was no oil on the dipstick mean there was no oil left in the engine. Should have gotten a warning light. Did the oil pressure go all the way to zero? I think somebody is jerking your chain on this. Keep us posted on this.

Filter was tight and dry... No oil on the dipstick.. Pressure dropped quickly so pulled over and turned it off. Not at zero but lowest I've ever seen it..

You posted while I was. What are they saying as far as engine damage?

Figures more top end.. Cam/lifters/rods but he's not sure yet either

It's not uncommon for it to run out of oil without any lights. We had it happen on a combine a couple summers back, it was shut off as soon as the light came on. Did some research on the switch and found that it wouldn't trip until 15 psi, which isn't enough for a loaded motor IMO. Motor was junk basically.

How much oil did it take to fill it back up to full?

So my truck is 'fixed'.. They still couldn't find any leaks and no engine noise(we'll see about that). Would love to know where it leaked from.

If they're signing off as it being good I'll drive it.. Not trusting it tho. Definitely getting AMA before the weekend now. Just in case

The truck isn't fixed..... if you saw the pressure drop off the bearings are garbage.... so wait until it spins one now.

Edson is a bunch of retards just like the dealer out here in Bonnyville....... they service the oilfield company fleet stuff and couldn't give a damn about you because you are just a waste of their time.

Now it was -30 C and once last winter on a -32 C day my trucks breather line from the valve cover to the intake manifold froze off..... It pressured up my crankcase and in my case blew the dipstick up out of the tube and puked oil out everywhere. I only lost about a litre...... but since the oil is on the passenger side maybe even look at where the dipstick tube seats into the block. The o-ring may have let go and blew it out there. Let it sit inside and thaw out.... voila blockage gone as the ice melts and then who knows about the o-ring. They could have reseated the dipstick tube and not even noticed lol... or bothered to tell you. Or it could be from somewhere else..... but being on the passenger side that would be my guess.

Crummy situation all around. GM's warranty is a joke especially when the dealer sucks.......

If the stealership didn't do anything besides refill the oil, it is NOT fixed in any way shape or form.

As far as the oil pressure being low, I'm not sure how much damage that would have caused. A good oil would have protected it for a period of time, and even at 15psi, you still do have oil flowing. In fact, IIRC GM says their engines "Normal" PSI at idle would be something like 20psi or less. I've never had a GM engine go below 40PSI at idle, so I think they are just CYA in case stuff wears more than normal. (Chrapsler oil pressure switches on some cars don't shut the engine off until they read 6PSI or less. Has a Cirrus like that. Never again)

I'm with the others in not knowing Canadian law but here in the US, it is illegal to not warranty a vehicle because OEM parts were not used. In fact it used to even say that in user manuals. (not sure about new cars now) I suspect canada also has similar consumer protections in place though.

Truck has 38xxx km... Was headed out to Jasper, AB to go snowboarding this weekend. I checked the oil before i left too, made sure it was full. Prob 3k since last oil change.

4 of us loaded up headed there in -30*C. Truck started making ticking noises between Edson and Hinton, which got louder(within 2mins) as i slowly watched the oil pressure drop. Pulled over, and shut the truck off. Smelled burnt oil as soon as i hopped out... I popped the hood and checked the oil, none left. Whole bottom of my truck was covered in oil. Ended up getting towed to a dealership in Edson, AB. Bannister GM. They looked at it today. I talked to their service rep and she said they couldn't find where the oil exploded from. But then said they ran a dye test and the filter had a small leak? I looked underneath while waiting in the freezing cold for the tow truck, and the filter was completely dry, as was the drain plug. So how does all my oil leak out of the filter??? She then proceeded to tell me there is definite engine damage and since I didn't use an AC Delco oil filter that any work would NOT be under warranty. WTF

I change the oil myself every 5000-6000km(even though it's said synthetic will last over 10000km). I've used all dexos approved oil, either Mobil 1 or Castrol syntec full synthetic. I've used AC Delco, K&N, fram synthetic filters. Everything is documented in my owners manual and have reciepts at home. Truck has never burned any oil either. Every oil change the level on the dipstick is the same as when I put fresh stuff in. I take pride in knowing how to do maintainence on a damn vehicle, have been my whole life. Easy stuff like oil changes, air filters, plugs, wires, etc... to pulling engines, swapping trannies, transfer cases, clutches, all that shit. But blaming an oil filter that's been fine for over 3000kms prior... REALLY GM?

She asked if the service manager can call me as he wants to talk. I said yes, i want to talk to him as well! I'm still waiting for a phone call....

Anyone have any thoughts here? Not impressed right now!

You gave them the out if you had any other filter than the AC Delco installed on your vehicle. It is a little know fact that after market oil filters (even though some are superior) void the warrenty (if one is in effect).

The dealer will use this as the excuse, instead of REALLY fixing what is wrong with the vehicle.

I purchase the AC Delco PF48 @ Wal-Mart for $3.78 per filter, that way the dealer (incase something like you describe goes wrong) can "kiss my @*s".

This is 100% false. I hope you were being sarcastic.

The ONLY time a filter will void warranty is if it is the incorrect fit or completely the incorrect filter for the engine.

Bingo on that. They can't void for non OEM parts like oil and air filters as long as they meet or exceed manufacturer requirements. That's like telling you that you have to use a particular brand of oil or gasoline... sorry doesn't work that way.

Doesnt matter anyhow... the breather froze and it has nothing to do with the oil filter. And he dealt with a terrible oilfield trash town dealership that couldn't care less what they do or don't do..... that's what happens when you get to deal with nameless faceless companies and fleet programs all day and make money hand over fist because of it.
