Transmissions Issues/Problems

First post. Thought I might be the only one having trouble after hearing what service department was telling me. I just bought a 2016 Silverado LTZ with an eight speed and it shifts horrible. Love the truck but not fun to drive while taking off and stopping. Truck has 1500 miles on it now because according to service department I have to get my truck to learn my driving habits. I am either a bad driver or have a truck with a learning disability. When truck sits over night or going home from work it always jerks a couple times taking off. Never fails. When I first bought a few weeks ago every time I would stop it would do something that felt like it was still shifting down when I should be stopped and actually feel like a double stop or surge forward. May sound crazy but really is the only way I can explain. There have been a couple times when I pulled into a parking spot to where it felt like I hit a curb because of the way it would stop. I have never experienced anything like this with any vehicle I have ever owned. Seems like the computer is not in sync with the transmission at all. I will make turns and vehicle don’t seem to downshift when it should. I truly feel like I am driving a manual shift truck without using clutch. Love the truck and hope enough people speak up so this problem can be fixed. According to my service department vehicle runs as it should. If this is the case I wish I would have kept my perfect running 2013 Ford F-150 4×4.

It is programmed for maximum fuel economy, not for maximum enjoyment.

I have a 2016 silverado high country 4x4 with the 6.2. I am also having some weird transmission problems and it seems to be more confused than when i first bought it. After it sits over night and I drive it the next morning I feel the same thing you are talking about. Its like my transmission is shifting from 2nd gear to 6th gear to 8th gear very quickly and its lunges forwards. Even my wife who doesnt know anything about vehicles said, "what was that." So I think if it doesnt improve by 5,000 miles I will be taking mine into the dealer. I think I also read somewhere that there is a service bullentin for these 8 speed transmissions. It was something to do with the transmission control module having to be relocated because it was causing harsh transmission conditions. If anyone else is having these problems or knows anything about this, please let me know. Its very aggravating when I pay so much for a vehicle and #GeneralMotors cant get there transmissions and engines in sync.

I have a 2016 Silverado Lt with 4,602 miles and this thing has a mind of its own it hard shifts in 1st and 2nd gears and jerks like it's trying to find what it's supposed to be doing next!

I'm really frustrated with the dealer telling me its normal, or can't get it to duplicate what you are feeling. Command answer I say.

The 1st and 2nd gears are always searching for what it should be doing next and at driving speeds 30-45 mph it jerks so bad I thought I left the transmission behind.

Can anybody help.

I absolutely Love Chevy trucks. Chevy is doing wonderful with its new line of trucks I would love to be a Chevy spokesman for there brand! Because people needs to see and hear more from the Chevy brand! Good job GM.

It's a awesome looking truck.

I hope this jerking, shifting, and sometimes feels like the 5.3 engine is powerless would just get fixed.

I spoke with two dealerships service centers and they told me its normal, I said really. Wow Help, please help.

The easiest way for a dealer to avoid fighting with gm or doing work they only get marginal amounts of money out of... is say it's "normal". The 6 liter in my 09 2500HD being noisy as hell beyond some acceptable LS clacking was "normal" too... and it grenaded on warranty and they put a long block in it. It's 6 speed slipped and clunked and if it's still on the road somewhere.... probably still is lol

First Post,

Just Bought 2015 GMC Sierra Double Cab 4x4 3.42 rear end.

With just over 1250 miles- I have a real issue with the 6 speed transmission trying to shift up constantly only to have to shift down 2 gears on a small hill.

I have tried driving in both manual mode and tow/haul both improve the situation. Aetting the manual mode to m4 or m5 helps but tow haul really works.

I drive both highway and hilly backroads every day and until I starting playing with manual tow haul I thought the truck was defective.

Question: Does GM have a new flash for the transmision for 2016- or can they flash for lack of better terms a sport mode which is say 20% reduced shifts point of tow haul mode?

IF I go to an aftermarket tuner does it void the warranty....?

I know my dealership will say it is normal operation-- I will bring it up on my first service though.

I am trying GM after 18 years of Toyota (which had issues but were addressed and fixed with no hassle) and I am both impressed and disappointed.- If not for this tranny seeming lost I would be happy with my new purchase.

GM doesn't offer transmission software updates to change the shift points. You'll have to get an aftermarket tune if you want the shift points changed. That's what led me to get my Blackbear Tune. Your powertrain warranty will be voided.

It's been great. Best money I've spent on a truck in a long time. The trucks drives and shifts exactly how I want it to. Very easy process too.

In the same situation as the rest of you. Ive felt this strange shift pattern since day one on this truck. I brought it up to my service tech, who I'm getting to know well, now that Ive been into AutoNation Superstition Springs Chevrolet in Mesa AZ service department four times in the two months Ive owned my truck. I had a defect in my steering wheel, they replaced it, I had shifting in my drivers seat causing that infamous "clunk on turns, my Pandora just flat out working like garbage through my iPhone, which I basically don't even use that option since it simply doesn't work half the time. My service tech tells me "it's just Apple, you should get a Droid" lol. Thanks I'll go sell my iPhone and get another 700 dollar phone so my 40k trucks stereo will work correctly :nonod:

Anywho, on to the transmission. My last trip I received my second loaner Silverado. The first one I got from a previous service I noticed immediately that truck shifted better than mine, and thats when I brought this all up, but in the end, they tell me m truck is fine and there are no tranny issues. Fast forward to this week, and I bring the truck back because I can still hear my seat clunking. I get this second loaner, and this one as well, shifts WAAYY better than mine. I call my service tech and tell him "look, I need my tranny diagnosed, or some kind of explanation why these two Silverado loaners shift and run so much better than mine. He calls me later and asks to come in to take a ride with their tranny tech, to show him what I'm experiencing. So he hops in, we take a ride, I'm driving, and hes seeing this crazy shift pattern, telling me things like "yeah they tune these for MPG, it shifts down to 4th while going 20 mph" things like that. But the key word in the truck was "confused" or "retarded" he totally agreed with me, and said its a very common complaint.

We get back to the shop and he says he is going to talk to his manager, I'm thinking they will do something for me to try and remedy this. Nope, tranny tech is nowhere to be found after he walks off, and manager comes back and says "truck is fine, maybe its because your truck is a 4x4 and the ones we loaned you are 2wd" Great, got nowhere, and still frustrated as ever...

Have a 2015 GMC Sierra 5.3 6sp tranny. I too have had the shifting issues, ie acts confused (especially when you need it the most) and jolts back and forth when accelerating mildly out of a corner, etc, etc. I was hoping someone has had a good experience with Tuners/Programers. I'm not looking to cranking to hp & torque (although if it doesn't cost too much in mpg I'd go with it), I'm trying to get this truck to where I can let my wife use it. Right now it is NOT a safe vehicle...when you need the truck to act and it doesn't...that is damn scary! Any one out there with a positive experience with a Tuner, it would be much appreciated to know what you used and the settings you found best. As stated in one of the postings I've read "we're alone in this" and if it voids my warranty...so what?! Warranty isn't worth a damn if the service personnel think your nuts.

I plan on doing the Black Bear tune. I'm just gonna get their AutoCal tuner from them, get my stock logs, send them over to them and have them send back a tune that will help my shift patterns, recognize my K&N intake and probably turn off the v4. I'm over the way this granny feels.

I brought my transmission shift issues to my dealers attention multiple times since it was brand new. Last summer they confirmed the symptoms I was experiencing and told me a transmission update would be released in 2-4 weeks to address my issue. It has been almost a year and no transmission update is available. I just requested an updated from the service department on the transmission update and mentioned the service bulletin mentioned earlier in this thread. I received this reply "there is another bulletin and it is for a brake switch concern, what happens is the brake switch is a variable type switch that tells the computer how much the brakes are applied. They found out the switch sticks at about 11% on, not enough for the brake light to come on, but the computer thinks the brakes are applied, and ramps up the pressure on the trans causing up shifts and down shifts to be very firm and harsh. We are to replace the brake switch and to relearn the trans shift adapts." This actually makes sense to me and will hopefully be the resolution I/we have all been looking for.

Ekordas, Let me know how it goes with the variable brake switch replacement. There's usually a unique number associated with the service bulletin. I may need that next time I bring it in. Thanks.

I have the 8 speed in my 2015 LTZ with the 6.2... same shifting issue. My dealer did a software update per some TSB, and replaced the torque converter. Totally different behavior now. Much more like one would expect... no wandering around between gears when starting under light acceleration.

One way to get your dealer to take your powertrain complaints seriously is to have it stop functioning completely at 4000 miles. I had to have mine towed to the dealership last night, because I couldn't get the thing to move after I stopped at a busy intersection. Imagine how embarrassing it would be to have your brand new $50K truck rendered completely immobile in a busy intersection. I was able to push it across three lanes of traffic, and to my luck, the tow truck operator was a Ford guy; told me he "loves picking up these new Chevys."

I tried everything I could think to do - shifting to reverse, shifting into 4L, nothing. I was able to wiggle the negative post off the battery and kill all power. I let it sit for a minute, but when I fired it up it was the same deal. I'm not sure if I have a shift control solenoid issue or my whole tranny got ripped through in 4000 miles. I find the latter to be less likely, but either way, I'm currently waiting on the dealership's prognosis.

Just an FYI it is a 2016 LTZ Crew Cab Z71 with an 8-speed & 3.42 rear end.

    • Did the KYBs keep it the same height in the front? I was concerned that pre-assembled assembly would raise it up an inch to standard non-z60 height.. I guess which it would make the rake 1 inch instead of 2 inches.
    • Thank you for keeping the train on the tracks and for a thoughtful engagement. I enjoyed the reflection on a previous stance to refine and improve your position. I like that inquisitive flexibility about you Atlas.    No the process isn't sterile. Hundreds, perhaps thousands of miles of piping, vessels, pumps. Chevron, the people I worked for, were keenly aware that there is a market for what is known as their "ISOCLEAN" line of lubricants. These are lubricants that are the same as those sold bulk that are further processed by filtration to a level your particular application demands. They will filter and package and provide lab documentation as required. Do not kid yourself. Every gallon of oil that goes into a Chevron Turbine, reciprocating compressor, generator is prefiltered and tested before being charged. Lest wise it was when I was there in the plants I worked in.    There are requirements set by manufactures for the cleanliness of the oils used in their equipment. OTR such as CUMMINS has standards shared with customers on this. Commercial interest selling to Ma and Pa do, but don't share that information. Not even upon request but internally, they do exist.    The GM study sited, (Graph from Machinery Lubrication in previous post) only shows "relative" importance.  I find that fascinating. By constructing the graph like this they admit there are dozens of factors in engine life and via scientific method determined the effect of 'relative cleanliness' on engine life not in miles but in 'FACTORS'. This allows a certain amount of reverse engineering does it not?   They even provided some touchstones. Beta 75 as a reference point. Wonderful stuff!!   Smaller blenders CAN and some DO take the time and effort to do better than a refinery or large bulk blender, like Warren Oil, in improving the "in the can" cleanliness. No I don't have a list but testing could generate that information.    Again, but one of several levers we can pull to improve engine life. The simplest is keeping a clean work station while doing your own oil changes.
    • Thank you. I'll give it a try
    • I just spent the last 45K miles doing samples every oil change over more than a full year to get the data for seasons and break-in to broke in.    I found the same thing to be true. Something was always teetering on done or had stepped off the cliff long before the OLM was DOA. In fact, I found about a thousand mile difference between summer and winter. That is during the winter half the OLM was STILL too long. Even the severe schedule was to long in the winter.   Now having done the work I can say I was NOT DISAPOINTED. I saw nothing I didn't already know. Nothing my father hadn't already demonstrated in his 2K OCI's pushing dated iron on dated oils and weak filters to mileages well beyond 300K.   Building on his work through use of Lab testing it wasn't hard to find the correlation between 'sight/feel/odor, the things dad relied on, and test results. Use of current viscosity stable chemistries & filters has pushed that marker for my motors out to 3K summer, 4K winter.    So the early lies were 3K on conventional oil and the lie upon the lie was 7K+. turns out to be off by a factor of two.    So... it is true that modern chemistry has doubled the useful oil life. But the base milage that came from was off by double. It's how good lies work. Partly true, sometimes mostly true so that your meter isn't set off. It also means that non-shear-stable shelf oils are only now as good as the old oils were in their best case scenario.    So the question now is how do we improve on that? Thus the question into cleanliness among the other items listed in the post quoted below.    If this bores you, feel free not to participate.
    • Is it though?  Like LTZ, not a high take rate.  Current Sierra has AT4, Denali and Elevation as its main bread winners.  Each trim accounting for 25-35% of sales for Sierra.  SLT makes up about 10-15% at best.        Like others have predicted here for GMC, it will be:   - Pro (equal to WT Chevy)   - Elevation (replaces SLE and SLT)   - AT4 (and X)   - Denali (and Ultimate).
