High oil?

Did you check to see if you were on level ground?

It's normal. Mine was a tad high on the stick on day one from the dealer. I too did an early change at 1350 miles from my experience w. several new GM motors. I used part of the 8.5 quarts to fill my filter adding the rest to the motor. It;s still a tad high, it's no big deal I'm certain your fine. When I do my Zo6 it takes 10.5 quarts but hits the line perfectly. I used 0/20 Mobil 1 meeting the dexos spec and a PF63.I plan on every 5-6K changes going forward if they fix my damn vibration!!!

Back in the days I've learned to add 75-80% of the new oil. Or at least 'til it shows at minimum on the dip stick.

Then leave the engine running to fill all "holes" like the filter and such.

Let it sit for 30 min an then add one by one until just below the max-mark on the stick.

I never drain the oil and dump the whole amount of new oil in just because it says so in the manual.

There can always be some leftovers from the old oil.

I just had my old changed by the dealer. I then took a 800 mile drive to VA from NJ and back. Decide to check the oil the next day, found it to be over the fill line, almost a quart over. I thought that was peculiar.

Do to time constraints, the dealers and other shops may not be allowing time for ALL the old oil to drain. Resulting in over fill. I take oil to my dealer and ask for a full drain and a level fill. If I do not remind them, mine will/may be a little over...say 1/2 qt...Mine is an 09 but same principle... I have the same issue with Honda/Acura on our cars....Had them drain some once just for principle after I had been specific on the level fill.

8.5 quarts is a lot of oil, yes I'll go by the manual. I'm under 1000 ,miles, so it's a ways off. One time I did over fill. I didn't account for the hill I was on, backed down. I drained some out right after.

This was helpful, guys.

I just signed up on this site and am really appreciative that there aren't a slew of smart ass remarks on this thread.

Some folks just have simple questions because they don't know.

Its good to hear sincere input.

Everytime i see this, it makes me wonder why...

Since we can assume 8.5qts was actually correct...that indicates that the dipstick or the dipstick tube was wrong and this was a no-cost way for GM to address the complaints.

So are you in fact driving around 0.5qt low now because GM didn't want to foot the bill for a new dipstick?

Hmmm....

8 qts puts mine right on the full mark on the dipstick.   1/2 qt high or 1/2 low is inconsequential.

I always do 8.5 of the Mobil 1 Full Synthetic and change it every 6,000 miles. It does show above the fill like ever so slightly, however it doesn't stay there for long. Mine burns about 1.5 to 2qrt every 3,000 miles so I am happy to start with it above the full line.

Wow, mine doesn't burn a noticeable amount on the stick in 7500 miles. I know every MFG has engines that use and engines that don't. My Ram burnt about a quart per 5000 miles on the factory fill oil. I swapped out to a full synthetic a local company blends meeting Chrysler specs and that virtually stopped any oil usage. I use the same brand synthetic in this 5.3 truck but formulated for Dexos spec.

I think the real issue is the misunderstanding of what over filling does to the engine.
Putting a half quart too much does absolutely no harm to the engine. It cannot cause a leak, cannot alter oil pressure, cannot cause the crank to beat the oil to a froth and most definitely cannot blow seals.
Remember that you are checking oil level with engine not running, as soon as the engine starts to crank over the oil level in the pan drops, and will stay lower while engine runs. GM likely changed the spec to reduce complaints, and warranty claims from customers complaining. As previously posted, it was the cheapest way out.
I wonder why they increased capacity in the first place. Could it be they simply increased the volume to account for increased oil consumption on the displacement on demand system(sorry, I'm old and cannot recall GMs name for it)? By having it overflow according to the stick, the average consumer would see it as being still full when they check the oil a thousand miles later.
