Opening Headlight without Cutting?

Update: I very carefully ground the fused ends off of the tabs to separate the pieces. FedEx is bringing some new stuff for me today, I scuffed the chrome trim and painted it satin black. I'm excited to see the new look. Still undecided on whether or not to do the grill at the same time.

I have a '14 All Terrain crew, white.

How did you re-assemble the lenses to your newly painted trim after grinding down the tabs?

sorry to necro-bump, but MAN this looks awesome. I've got a feeling i'm going to be in way over my head but I'm ordering some new bulbs and am definitely going to get this started ASAP

At first I thought the glue was gonna be too hard to do it, but it does take a little persuasion and some force to get in there. Extremely happy with the result i think it looks so much better than with the chrome. Also very happy that I didn't have to cut them everything went together super easy and like a glove.

Let me know what you guys think, and ask away if you have any questions.

Yeah. What did you do/use to re-seal them when assembling the headlamp housings, i.e. sealant? I'd be concerned about condensation afterward if not properly sealed.

this thread really makes me wish I'd gotten an SLT just for the running lights alone . With the SLE's we've just got more chrome where your DRL's are, i'm trying to imagine it black but not sure if it will be too much or not

also, any recommendations on lighting upgrades while I'm down there? HID's? vled LMZ?

Correct me (anyone ) if im wrong I read on another thread a SLE owner upgrade to the SLT headlights and seem to work. Not sure if he ran to any major issues.

For those who have baked their headlights to open them, did you need any extra sealant? Ie would it be a good idea to order some OCI rubber butyl glue like what TRS sells so that I can make sure that the headlight gets resealed properly or should I be fine reusing the OEM stuff?

I found this on hidplanet a while back. Post #1643 and #1645. Lightwerkz uses the Koito butyl rubber sealant to seal them up. On the other hand, I've heard it's hard to work with too.

Fastheadlights Phil likes silicone.

I'm waiting on some switchback led strips that I ordered that I am going to mod into the upper and lower chrome areas and then paint everything black including the side marker lens. Will start a dedicated build thread with finished product.

I baked my headlights this weekend and now I understand why Phil at Fastheadlights cuts them open. It was a very tedious process to get the lenses off first. Then clearing the perma-seal is another story and I can't repeat the words I used. I lost count how many times I had to put the housing back in the oven to soften the perma-seal enough to scrape it out. I used the butyl from TRS to put the lights back together. It seems like some of the guys that have done this either just simply had lights that weren't as much trouble or they didn't let on that these lights kicked their buts.

The Retrofit itself was pretty simple, although the brackets are printed and crack easy. I need to send some pictures to Phil so he can see what I encountered. It was not a big deal, I mixed up some epoxy as an added measure to ensure the brackets would stay attached to the projector mount.
