What is a 2015.5?

2015.5 HD (2500/3500) trucks are built after 08/14/2015

I think 2015.5 1500 trucks started coming out this spring.

There were changes made, options offered that only these trucks received. Apparently the hardware was a little bit different for mylink too.

Well I guess mine was not I bought the first week of June. Would it be possible to buy a 16 display and put it in a 15 to get android auto?

I think you are ok. The vehicles are known as 2015i, or interim, as GM added options and dropped some colors. Yours is probably a 2015.5 or "i" as only the first 2015's off the assembly line last fall were "early" models. Do you have the 4G hotspot with larger roof antenna? Was 6.2L with 8 speed transmission an option when you bought your truck. I'm betting the answer is yes, unless you bought one that had been sitting 6-9 months.

These guys chat about it here:

As I recall GM's official position is that Apple Car Play and Android Auto are not backward compatible. One of the reasons listed was that that a capacitive touchscreen is required to support these features while the "older" vehicles came equipped with resistive touchscreens. Not to say it wont work, just that the user experience may not be as good (pinch to zoom, more pressure on touchscreen, multi finger input, etc).

This article mentions the screen being different for 2016's:

TL;DR

There's no way to retrofit older cars. Existing GM owners can't update their cars to support CarPlay or Andoid Auto, even if they have a dashboard screen similar to the 2016 models.
"We can't offer the software back in time for older model years because it's not just the software," Fowle said. "We made some significant hardware changes for model year '16. The pinch and zoom ability is something new to that screen, so a 2015 car can't do that because it's an older, less-sophisticated screen."

Besides replacing the HMI module, I wonder if the screen could be replaced as well. I've been trying to locate a part #.

For a 2015, I found 23487121 - Display System. Radio Control Unit - but I'm not even sure if it is just the screen.

My 2015i has pinch to zoom and spread to pan out along with swipe functions on the screen. I did hear that the 2016's will have a more powerful processor.

There is way way way more to it than simply the screen, I've covered this in many posts (probably even this thread LOL) :)

At any rate the unlock works GREAT on the 2016 including removing the Car Play motion locks as well! :)

So based on this thread and videos posted, the upgrade to a 2016 system for 14/15 system sounds feasible, just costly. Looking forward to the seeing the pricing.

is it possible we will see android auto since it will be available on the GMC models?

Sent email to one of the development managers. He stated there will be no upgrades in respect to Android play/air for the 15, Since it was a hardware n software upgrade for the 16s

Mirroring is better as it allows all apps. Android Auto only has a few apps, maybe more will be added later.
