PF 48 Oil Filter Issues

basic frams have been garbage since they were first introduced. Now that being said, the mid and upper level frams are nothing to be ashamed of and are VERY good filters. But get what you want. I tend to stick with the NAPA Gold or Platnum since I like to do 5000-7000 mile oil changes without having to change the filter prior.

The regular PF48's are going quick. I had a tough time locating one to perform my 5k mile scheduled oil change. All of the GM dealers and Delco retailers are out, and only have the inferior E-core PF-48E. There was one PF48 left at the local Walmart, in the corner, in the dark. I did find a case of 12 of them at the local Ford dealer. I bought the whole thing. I will not use those E-cores on any of my vehicles.

They have been discontinued for roughly 6 months now. The classic PF48's are to be used until stock is depleted, then the PF48E's will be the only AC Delco filter available. Fortunately, they are several other filter brands out there that do a nice job. I have tried to keep my GM vehicle all GM, but with their offerings lately, they are making that tough to do.

I wouldn't be taking my truck back there any time soon. Just my humble opinion.

+1 on this, they should have a recall on the business that you went to.

Yeah, I heard that AC/Delco PF48's were going to be Ecore sourced. I have always been partial to the Donaldson and Wix (Napa Gold) lines of filters. I am presently using Fram Ultra's on my Silverado now. Got a very good deal on a six pack of them on Ebay several months ago. Anyway, keeping a vehicle all OEM is really spurious at best. Except for the body components, an OEM makes very little of what goes into a vehicle. Even bumpers on those bodies are totally outsourced. A large majority of what is put in a new production vehicle is outsourced. Even many of the individual internal components of an engine. Having hauled new production parts to Ford, GM, and Mopar plants for several decades, I have seen there is very little that is OEM made. And it gets better than that! Ford glass plants make many windshields for other OEM's. There is a lot of switch hitting going on. That a part is so-called OEM part doesn't much impress me anymore.

Could be true, but I believe there are some differences in the tolerances and quality of OEM vs. non-OEM, even if sourced from the same manufacturer, that's my observation anyway.

Found a puddle of oil under the truck this morning. I had left and returned because I forgot something and noticed the puddle of oil in the driveway. Upon crawling under the truck I see drips on the filter so I went to the oil change place. They said there was a recall on AC Delco filter PF 48 because they will not stay tight. I was down about a quart and a half. The filter supposedly was able to be spun off very easily. Anyone else heard of this?

I always do my my own oil and filter change. I never had an issue with a filter leaking until I used the new PF48E.

I have had excellent results with the UPF-48, which I'm told is the exact same thing as a Mobil 1 filter.

My truck had a PF 48E on it when I did my first oil change in May. I put a Team Ultra on it, just because of the E cores. I like to keep my truck all GM, but now the oil filter will be the exception.

I have always used the PF48 filter. Since they changed to the PF48E e-core, the regular filters are results hard to find. After I used my last PF48,

I now use Mobil 1 filters. AcDelco can keep their crappy e-core filters!

UPF48-R has the same guts as the PF48 non E-Core with a higher burst rated can than the PF48.

It's the same thing as a Mobil 1 from what I understand. It has the exact same anti-drainback valve on it as a Mobil 1 filter. I had a couple of them at the same time once, compared them side by side, identical. On the plus side, the UPF48R is a little cheaper.

Thanks for the tip on the UPF48R. Will call my dealer Monday to see if they have them. If not, Fram Ultra is a good filter.
