Chrome SLT Wheels Chipping/Peeling?

Recommended Posts

I did a quick search on here and didn't see any other instances but...

Has anyone had any issues with the chrome finish chipping in the inner radius of the wheel spokes? It's weird because it's only one of the four rims... I made a complaint to the dealer today while it's in for service so we'll see what they say.

You can't see the peeling in the picture - only the location of the issue.

Thanks in advance.

Peeling chrome is indicative of poor surface degreasing prior to chroming the wheel. They owe you a new wheel.

Yea they gave me the ol' - must have been a rock that chipped it...

But since it is happening in more than one radius I'm not buying it... The goal was to document it before i hit my warranty, which i did... so if it gets worse i'll bring it up again. I know that isn't right but i don't have the time to argue at the moment.

I am getting the lightbulb/bcm tsb done on Wednesday i'll mention it again then.

Cragar chrome wheels from the 70's and 80's sold by discount auto parts chains had similar problems. Many of them were peeling for the same reason I mentioned.

That is exactly the reason I don't run the factory 22's in the winter. I've had dozens of sets of chrome wheels over the years and they ALL had one thing in common: After 1 or 2 winters of snow and road salt, every set started to pit, flake and peel, no matter how good I thought the chrome plating quality was.

With these 22's costing almost $500 a pop, I opted for "winter wheels" that aren't chrome plated.

I would say GM owes you a wheel, simply because your truck is still under warranty.

Yea you guys are right... just hate to argue the issue with a dealer who has provided what i would describe as good service (so far). It's hard to find good service these days.

Luster those rims are bada$$ - btw.

When I was buying my truck I found one in Iridium Black with the 22's and it was a little out of my price range so I bought the truck I have now. Definitely have no regrets but every time I see your posts i think of it.

Thanks Jon... yeah, I definitely think they are the best looking GM wheels!

Stay after the dealer to submit the claim, GM will only warranty peeling chrome for the 1st year of the warranty. I would let the dealer know if they don't submit it for warranty you will call GM Cust Care and if you get the service survey you will be forced to fill it out with a less than outstanding survey.

Why only for one year? GM replaced all four wheels on my 2009 Impala LTZ after 3 years/35k miles due to corrosion under the clear coat without any arguments. Why should peeling chrome be any different than corrosion under the clear coat?

I've been getting brand new chrome lug nuts and locking nuts EVERY oil change since leaving the lot because they rust within months... 3 sets so far. Not sure if it's sad or funny haha

UPDATE: Have a case/reference number from GM Customer Care... they are contacting the dealer to get an assessment.

Customer care is saying they have to take the dealers word since they can't see the rim. They want me to bring it back if it gets worse.

I offered to take it to a second dealership but I'm not sure I want to do that - could be setting myself up for failure.

Take it to another dealer, I had that same issue with my 2012 Silverado with the chrome 20's. I had 5 wheels replaced due to the chrome corroding or peeling and they never asked 1 question, they just ordered me new wheels.
