2wd Crew Cab vs 4wd Double Cab

I've got a 4wd LT double cab with a baby seat, and have my three kids with me regularly with no issues. I'd trade that little bit of leg room for more useful bed space, and 4wd all day every day.

Like a lot of things on internet forums, the "need" for crew cab gets hyped to death. Toted my son in his car seat and then son and friends in the back of an xcab the last 15 years.

Never once cursed the Xcab, actually purchased 4 of them in that time.

Always had 4wd though, because if you live in WI a pickup truck without 4wd may as well not have wheels in the winter- bad news. In Florida I'd go for crew cab, unless at the boat ramp a lot. (which I am here- and "good tires" don't help pull a 2-5,000 lb boat up a slippery wet ramp)

When ours were little, there was no such thing as a 1500 crew. We thought the extended (now double) cab was a huge improvement.

I find it interesting that very few people are discussing the disadvantages of the shorter pickup box. Maybe it is because many with the crew cab and with shorter box don't haul very much. (yes I know crew cabs are available with 6 and half foot box , but that is not the part of the choices that the OP is asking) . I have a double cab 4 x4 with 6 and half ft box and haul grand children around in car seats on occasion no problem (even five year old in booster seat)

I find the advantage of the longer box is that for example you can fit 8 ft length lumber diagonally with tailgate closed, and ATV fits in, and with my Leer cap on I can fit a heck of a lot more Christmas presents for grand kids on trips down to visit. So OP should balance the need for more box space with need for more knee space and then add in aspect about 4 x 4 or not.

I agree, I hauled some lumber home the other day from Lowes and it was a great surprise that I could fit it in there diagonal without having it stick up over the tail gate.

Trailer, but most people if there honest need the back seat room more. Anyone with kids not in construction has people in the back seat more often than a full pickup box.

Honestly who is bothered by leaving tailgate down for lumber either.

I consider myself "honest" and need the bed more, because I use a truck like a truck. All winter long my 6'+ ice shanty is in the back, I fish 2-3X a week and it's easier just leaving it in. All spring/summer/fall I'm hauling my 16' canoe almost weekly, and my sons kayak and Honda as well. On occasion I even throw my 14'6" jon boat in back.

The kids I've hauled in back over the years may have wished for more inches in front of their knees, but I needed it in the bed more. If your truck is your mini van, the crew cab is the way to go, but I couldn't even live my life with a crew cab short box. (or without 4wd)

Anyone who hauls frequently and doesn't want to tie down every load. Yesterday I picked up a few sticks of 96" mirror trim at a site and drove 10 miles to the office. They fit fully in the bed and I didn't need to secure or flag them.

Good points Brian S and Georgia1911...........some people buy their pickups to be station wagons, some buy them to be waxed and polished sports cars and some buy them to be trucks, the OP will need to decide which priority takes precedence.

I use my truck. Hey, the extra foot of bed space helps me get more bang for the buck on a load of firewood.

Also, less load sticking out of the truck the better. I will admit though, I use my 5x8 utility trailer for large hauls and mulch. Easier to load/unload, and sorta helps prevent dings and stuff on the truck.
