Help! My new Silverado vs Used Raptor

Keep the silverado, and mod the suspension. Mazulla mid travel kit, 3.0 king coil overs you'll be WAY better off then the Gen 1 raptor.

I was between a gen 2 raptor or my 17 LTZ. For the price difference i could have a built silverado !

I think I am leaning that way. Just can't in good conscience ditch this truck that I bought brand new with an extended warranty for something with that many miles and no warranty no matter how much I love Raptors.

If I can improve the ride significantly, this truck will serve me well for the long haul.

I'd really like to run 35's so now I guess I am between a 4" coilover BDS/Fox lift kit to run 35's or just a Mazulla/Baja Kit/Icon coilover kit and 33's.

Thoughts?

I really appreciate everyone's input btw. First world problems here for sure haha.

You don't need to run a drop bracket lift to clear 35s.

If my tacoma with 3" lift could clear 35s your silverado can. It's all about back spacing! Might have to trim the fender liners some. e765810fd86af85d48b24f396827cb34.jpg

The used raptor street driven or not most likely will need a suspension refresh. Look into sdhq. They built a few k2s that came out real nice.

Unless you are doing high speed stuff there is no benefit to a raptor over the silverado. Small lift, tires and few suspension bits it will be pretty equal in terms of trail capability in Ohio. Seems silly to me and this is more an image purchase than an actual necessity purchase. Isn't my money or anyone's here though so not sure why you are asking a bunch of strangers what to do. You will hear exactly what you think you will hear on each forum. Here they will say trading a new truck for a worn down high mileage old truck is silly when it isn't as capable in many areas and the raptor won't be utilized. On the raptor forum they will say it is the best bro truck since sliced bread and more capable everywhere and worth more no matter how many miles or worn out than any new truck. Make your own decision...

Yea I've been there, do it or you will hate your truck real quick. You can't make it a raptor, and will be worth more in a few years if your reasonable with it. That is if it is as clean as you say.

Man, then gen 1 raptors value will drop like a rock in a few months when the new ones hit. This seems like the dumbest trade I could imagine. Of your gonna do it, get a new one and quit being cheap. You're gonna do nothing but loose money with a swap to a truck with high miles. My old 6.2 with headers, tune and TB would smoke my old raptor in a race. I know because I sold it to my buddy and we race all the time. Sure the raptor is better off road but damn, a little $ can fix the gap pretty quick.

You sure about that? I've read a ton of stuff on here and it looks like a 4" BDS is the minimum lift needed to run 35's and even then it has to be a 20" rim with 5.75" backspacing.

I'd love to just run Icon/King/Fox coilovers and stuff 35's under there even if it requires some trimming. I'd prefer 17 or 18" rims. Methods for sure.

Baja Kits/Mazulla look legit but may be a bit overkill for my needs. Not trying to go with glass fenders, replace axle shafts and all that.

4" BDS with Fox coilovers will most likely be the route I go unless I find something else that will work. Camburg UCA's and King/Fox coilovers is a possibility too.

I took the comparison to Raptor suspension literally with recommending the mid travel kit from Mazulla. I personally hate drop bracket/spacer lifts I will say that BDS is the cream of the crop in the drop bracket realm, just not for me though.

Just run Mazzula UCA, Kings, and some 34's.

It is a very poor financial decision to spend big bucks on a high mileage used raptor.

If they depreciate that slowly, you'd be wayyy better off buying a new raptor.

As for a mid travel gm, while I don't doubt it would be better than the raptor off road, it would probably not be as good as the raptor for the combination of off-road and everyday on-road performance.

85K miles seems high to me in considering a primary vehicle. Now if the service history is known and comes with an extended warranty then sure. Otherwise there are too many unknowns and I would pass.

Yeah, I've all but settled on keeping my Silverado. Coilovers, wheels/tires, exhaust upgrade and a tune should be more than enough to keep me happy for the forseeable future.

I would keep my current truck and not attempt to make it function like a Raptor or a Reaper. If I was planning to off-road in excess of my Z71 LTZ's capabilities, it would not be with my primary vehicle. Buying a used vehicle can be fine but there are risks. I opt for a new vehicle over a well used "deluxe" version.

Who off roads the piss out of a $60K truck? If you have the money to beat the crap out of a new truck like that buy new or build your own truck up. Raptors are nothing but an extravagant mall crawler, nice but again why would you wheel an expensive truck? Buy a trail rig and beat the shit out of that as Donstar said instead of taking a bath on a pre owned Raptor with 85K.

I'm with Aaron on this one, assuming yours is 4x4. If it's 2wd, go with lift spindles and 35's will fit right in.

If you WANT a Raptor, then go trade the Chevy for a Raptor and be done with it haha. Just look for another one, cause 85k miles in 3 years puts the truck in the same condition as a 2010.

As of depreciation, yes, Raptors with the 6.2 are going up on value due to the new ones having the ecoboost V6. But do you really care for depreciation more than caring for having a truck you like, with low mileage, problem "free"?

I like the idea of keeping your existing truck then buying a trail beater. I mean, if I was out on a trail and put a scratch or small dent on the fender of a $60K truck, I would have a heart attack. However, If I had a mid '90's Taco without 200K on the clock sitting next to my nice new Silverado in the garage, I wouldn't cry so much if I blew off a fender or snapped an axle.

One other idea is to take the patient route. Sell your Silverado privately so you get market value for it then buy a low-mileage used Raptor or a new one. (Even with the V6, the new Raptor seems to have some great features that make it more user friendly and capable off road.....even though the exhaust note reminds me of a mail truck with a busted muffler).

Agreed with this. Mazzula skid plates/bumpers would be nice too.

Get a tune as well.

    • The engine was done as part of the 6.2 recall?   You'd have to see if your VIN also has the 6.2 engine special coverage on it.  Coverage number is N252494003.  If you have this, your engine is covered under this and NOT the GM replacement part engine warranty which is 3yr/100k from the date of install.  The 3yr/100k mi warranty is in effect for non warranty purchases.     This is not any different if it was replaced under warranty without a recall or special coverage.  So if you had a 5.3 and it popped at 3 years in at 50,000mi during the 5yr/60k powertrain, the replacement engine would not get the 3yr/100k, and instead gets the remainder of the 5yr/60k as coverage.     So N252494003 gives 10 years or 150,000mi of coverage, which ever comes first, starting at the vehicle in service date.  So if your in service date is 01/01/2022, N252494003 gives you special coverage of the engine until 01/01/2032 or 150,000mi, whichever comes first.  So if your start date was 01/01/2022, you'd have left 5 years and 4 months (lets round to august 1st), or 62,000mi left of coverage.   So you need to know your in service date to know how much coverage is left.
    • Okiee dokie there bud, way to take things to the extreme.   I guess you missed the whole point and take things way to serious. I installed different EV6 style injectors that just so happen to be larger in my car running the same LQ4 engine and with a better spray pattern than the stock style injectors and I noticed no difference in the idle quality. Kinda was my round about way of saying that even if you put the same size but better style injectors in your truck, you will likely see the same thing.    I'm sure you're great to have conversations with in person if that's how you act through a keyboard. One little things sets you off and now I guess my dick is all up in your face.
    • I can't believe that could possibly be the case. It should be 36mo/100k miles from installation. Then again, it also seems like since a dealership installed it, it'd all be in the system and you wouldn't need to worry about registering, either. Shows you what I know. 😄 Hope this one outlives the warranty!
    • I haven't seen inventory recovery from COVID.    In the few random times I 'build my own' truck or SUV, no one has the exact one I want.   GM has been working to lower incentives too for a long time.    A $500 incentive isn't getting me off the couch to go truck shopping.
