a co worker has a 2001 impala, the cluster is failing (fuel gauge ETC) and now I guess the blinkers, tail lights and high beams work randomly...any ideas?

Sell it to a junk yard and tell him to go get a 2012/2013 Impala instead. Major improvements.

Sounds like a bad cluster for the gauges and maybe the same nor everything else or it's a bad multi function.

We had several 2000-2004 Impalas.

Turn signals work through the hazard flasher. For awhile turning on and off the hazard lights will fix the turn signals. When that no longer works, replace the hazard switch/flasher unit.

Multifunction switch also is a weak point. First you lose low beam headlights randomly, then all the time. We had to replace the multifunction switch twice on one Impala.

Gas gauge worked fine until below 1/2 a tank. Then would indicate random amounts. The DIC (Driver Information Center) would give close (within a gallon) reading of fuel remaining, IF you reset it at every fill up. We never found a cure for the gas gauge.

The "motors" (not sure of the correct name) for the gauges fail. New ones can be soldered to the printed circuit board of the Instrument cluster. We lost both temp and tach.

Lights for the heat/AC controls burn out and are not replaceable, other than soldering new bulbs to the printed circuit board.
