Transmission Fluid Change

The Nick in the other forum was right, Carburetor and Choke Cleaner does work. There is still a lot of grime around the edges as you can see. I might try to get a little more off, but the wire brush is having a lot of trouble taking the rest off. So I think it is mostly stained in grime that will not effect the new gasket.  

 

Also just realized Nick said he posted it, so guessing it is a different account and you are one in the same?

This is the new gasket I plan to put "The Right Stuff" on. It definitely looks like a one time use gasket unlike the factory one.

I would love to hear thoughts on reusing this gasket. Even though it is a little rough it looks more like a 'lifetime' gasket than the other one. I took the pictures for comparison as well.

The new filter is on the left, you can clearly see they are not the exact same thing but otherwise look compatible.

The new filter is on the left again. Fortunately the neck and everything else looks to be about the same length, so I believe I am, how you say, good to go? I tried to get the seal out that the neck goes into for a few minutes and had no luck. I guess the idea is to damage the seal without scratching the neck walls and such. I imagine it could let contaminants through a newly scratched channel or something. Any ideas besides tapping a screwdriver in between them?

Jordan, good job on cleaning that pan and magnet, I'm sure you would agree after all the fine crud you cleaned out of both that a pan drop and filter change is worth it opposed to a flush only without dropping the pan. Replacement filter is somewhat different, must be an updated design which isn't all that uncommon.

Thanks for stopping by. Yeah the entire reason that I decided to put myself through this hell was to make certain it gets done right. I think in today's world it goes without saying that people usually do not treat your motor vehicle as they would their own and ones that do are difficult to find. Also yes, the amount of crap that I cleaned out was pretty unbelievable. I am also happy to see that a good deal of my fluid still has a somewhat 'red' tint to it as well.

 

Also about the filter I believe another user mentioned they are generally only used for removing degraded transmission parts to prevent them from causing failure to the transmission. I would have agreed with them as I have seen them cut open before and they are usually only like a 'net' material that looks like it would be poor for removing contaminants. However, it does have that paper material and the oil that is coming from the return side is noticeably red for whatever it is worth. I might just have to cut it open to see for myself.

Keep further posts about your fluid change in this thread. Don't start another one.

The shift linkage bracket is bolted from above using gm's large torx bolts. You would need some wobble extension and a flex head to remove and replace.

I just thought maybe starting another one would allow people to see the progress at the very beginning like Nick's. No big deal though.

I know there are plenty of complaints about this setup already, but it feels like it would be easier to buy a new transmission from a junkyard, change the fluids and rotate them out. I love General Motors but this is ridiculous.

If you wish to, you would need to put it into the "how to" section. I'd suggest you think about what you want to write, some of your pictures need to be better quality, imo. Be thorough.

Yeah you are right. I have been thinking about buying one of those Milwaukee Rocket lights that are like a stand. They have a new one out that is around $300.00 just the tool I believe and they seem pretty awesome but expensive nonetheless. I am thinking I could lay it under the truck and light up pretty much everything. Not sure how it would work though.

Yes, you have to use a small screw driver or what ever you have to move the seal off the side of the transmission so you can pull  it out.  You can see that in the thread I posted on my truck.

So I managed to get the seal out today. However, there are small pieces of it that will not come out. The remains are at the very top part of the seal going up into the outlet. I have tried using a wire brush, scotch brite and even scraping at it with a small screwdriver. The stuff is in there pretty good. I am afraid that it could interfere with the new seal. On the other hand getting any rougher with it could scratch the neck, assuming I have not already. I was not able to get a picture, not sure it would show up well any. I guess I could try for one tomorrow. Any ideas?

 

Also do you guys think the filter and seal are compatible? You may not be able to see it in my pictures but the actual collection part of the filter is about twice as big on the old one as compared to the new one. Also the new seal is a metal ring with rubber around the top (going into the outlet where the stuff is stuck) and the old one is all rubber.

You shouldn't have to use any kind of sealant on the pan mating surfaces or gasket. Also, if yours has the rigid gasket, reuse it. They are designed to be able to be reused. Lastly, that filter you have is the wrong one. The shallow pan filters are metal, and the deep pan filters are all plastic. Look at the difference in overall height side by side. You'll see the top of the pickup tubes will differ by about a half inch. If you use that metal one, the trans will starve of fluid during driving. Also, the seal will be just fine. Some are partially rubber coated, others a completely coated. It'll be just fine.

 

Could you take a picture of the little bits of seal left in the pump body? It sounds like it won't be an issue, but it would be easier to discern with pics.
