Trailer Hitch Plug

Just wondering if anyone uses a trailer hitch plug? I was thinking about picking one up to throw in during the winter when I don't really tow much. Thought I wonder if plugging it up might cause reduced airflow, thus allowing for more rusting?

I have had one on multiple vehicles over the years, never noticed any additional wear and tear because of it. I use a college logo metal one, so it actually doesn't seal up like the one in your link does (I don't think). I just think it looks better.

This is probably better than keeping the hitch in all the time. But anything that traps moisture creates the atmosphere for rust. That's why I leave my receiver open and empty unless I'm using it. But honestly, those things rust no matter what we do, so maybe it doesn't even matter...

Yea, I was just wondering if there would be a difference. Maybe I can live without a plug. I just hate looking at a rusty hitch.. though like you said, it’s pretty much inevitable unless you sand everything and repaint it often. Sounds like a PITA to me though.

If its clean & dry, simply hit it with a rattle can of hardware store rust paint.  (Tremclad etc.)  Holding and using a piece of cardboard in to protect parts you don't want painted while spraying makes this a very quick fix.  However, a little surface rust on the inside of the hitch is quite acceptable and expected on most vehicles!

i have that plug on our truck. its been in for 3 Wisconsin winters so far and it works great and wont cause and extra wear or rust. it helps keep the sand out and looks better.

i like ours.

This thread caught my attention right away.   So I just got  back from my first oil change on my  truck;   2018 Sierra Denali Ultimate.  Yeah... it was a leftover late build, I purchased July 2019.. in case your wondering.   I walk around the back of the truck and noticed my hitch cover is gone ,...it was a Reese pop in rubber cover, nothing special.  It only cost $6.99.  Just can’t figure out if the car wash popped it out or  if it was taken by someone less fortunate than me....lol.

oh well.....guess I’ll be looking for something that has a lock.

Here is what I use to plug my hole. Sorry for the angle but as you can see no room to get behind for a better picture.

Why not leave the hitch in it..?

i like my shins not to be in pain is one reason the other is that it will eventually rust its self in place, especially in cold climates.

I’ve used a cover for years & it doesn’t make it rust faster. In fact, I think it helps cut down on salt spray & road grime getting in there.

I’ve moved on to an HD & now I’m bummed that I can’t find the style of cover I like in a 2.5”.

Check out Kempter Kustoms, a bit more expensive but there are some pretty sweet styles. Also has the hitch pin hole so if you have a locking hitch pin, these are perfect. I'm considering picking one up soon (the plug, already have a locking hitch pin).
