I have already a few pages back. Do the extra power of the 6.2 outweigh the cost and mpg of the 5.3

Judging by the guys in this thread, you have to have one of these to drive a 6.2...

spacer.png

at the end of the day its 65 horsepower, you have to put premium in it and it doesn't necessarily get up quicker.

If you want a sporty engine (with an actual noticeable difference) look at the Ram Hemi 5.7. But then you would own a Ram/Dodge/Chrysler. I couldn't bring myself to go that route as they are also ugly AF and look like a Walmart AD on the interior.  I test drove almost every half ton that they make and the difference b/w the 5.3 and 6.2 is negligible. Don't let the fruitcakes in this thread with buyers insecurities/remorse/defense mechanisms/tiny penis syndrome convince you otherwise. Drive them both and see for yourself...

That tells me what your question is but not how  you define BETTER.

Lol I hear you, but at this point I don't care. Either take it or leave it. The messenger is never popular. After all, the most popular messenger of all-time was pierced to a cross and left to die. Just crazy how in denial and ill-informed most of the people who spend/spent so much money on something are. As they say, you can lead a horse to water but you can't make it drink. Cheers man.

Better: 6.2 > 5.3 or 6.2 < 5.3?

I want to know if the power is worth the extra cost or not

That would be an opinion...

Let me try this another way.

Some people think strawberry ice cream is better than vanilla. To them what they LIKE makes a thing better

Some people think a 1/2 socket is better that a 7/16 for turning a 1/2 nut because what it's PRACTICAL is better.

Some people think a 2000 gas motor is better than a 1925 because what is more EFFICIENT make it better.

What would feature or trait of one of these motors would make it better to YOU.

Worth? That is not really a Better question.

Let me show you something.

A 5,433 pound Crew Cab 4X4 with a 5.3 has a weight to power ratio of 16.2 lbs/hp

A 4527 pound RCSB 2WD with a 4.3 has a weight to power ratio of 15.8 lbs/hp.

A 5433 pound 6.2 v a 4700 pound 5.3 is not the same thing as a 5500 pound truck with a choice of either motor.

If you drag racing this makes all the difference in the world. If you towing, now we have a different set of things to look at. Axle torque and in that case vehicle weight matters little.

When you ask a question without full point of reference and are not sure of what you mean by a key word you get 13 pages of........

Just goes to show the mental instability that’s plaguing our country, attack those with more than you, looks to be a Bernie Sanders supporter mentality lmao!

I’ve worked hard for my money and because I’ve worked hard for my money (enjoyed every bit of it) I’m ALWAYS buying the best. While others give their opinions based on test driving, not from actual ownership. Remember this, you’ll never hear of someone complaining that they wished they bought the 5.3 instead of their 6.2, it’s ALWAYS the other way around.

As far as the 4.3 is concerned, it’s up there with the 5.3 too. I had two of them as delivery trucks for my shop, much better at small deliveries not weighing much. The 5.3’s were ok but you literally cannot find 6.2’s or 6 cylinders on the lots, they’re typically spoken for and yes, I like that the 6.2’s are required to be in the higher end models or else they’d be everywhere and even the Bernie Sanders supporter would jump on it too thus lowering the trade in on them. I don’t buy based on the cost, I buy based on what my requirements are. After all, the 6.2 though modified is in use in the corvettes for a reason and not a 5.3 and if you want to go faster, supercharging the 6.2 is the way to go. It’s also got far better resale than the 5.3’s.
I see the 5.3 dwindling away as the smaller engines are taking the spot with same hp and torque or more. Look at the Raptor, turbo charged 6 in it but may be bringing back a 7litre for buyers like myself that demand a lot out of their trucks as I Hog hunt on weekends and hate sitting in the blinds so I’m on OffRoad areas frequently.

I do know that you cannot find the 6 cylinders on the lots as they’re typically spoken for and I do see why. They make excellent personal and delivery vehicles as they’re zippy and in my opinion somewhat better value than the 5.3’s exception of towing, that’s where the 5.3 is IMO are better suited. If you don’t tow but looking for more of a customized trim level and frequent Home Depot on weekends or cruise then the 6 cylinder is the way to go.

What I am pointing out is BETTER isn't a shape or a dimension. It's doesn't have mass. It can't be measured by anyone other than the one who is assigning that tag to it. When you ask  "BETTER" you have to give it a reference if you want others to weigh in on it and actually get useful information.

Max towing and power is what have to have as I use those attributes often. I sometimes tow a 7k# trailer and found that the 6.2 is far better at towing as I need quick passing power and as I’ve complained about my 5.3 having horrible towing power and mpg’s when compared to the 6.2, I speak from personal experiences. Others may guess at best or envy at a much more powerful and higher equipped vehicle, I see it as a requirement. The 6cylinder is a great economic little powerhouse of a motor considering it’s power to cubic inch especially the newer 4 cylinders

My 5.3 will do some pretty amazing feats... and that is V8 mode only... 27 mpg for 50 miles...

That's been my experience too.  My 5.3 just didn't cut it in our mountainous terrain.  The 6.2 does a much better job  of towing my travel trailer.  And the Max Trailering package is better suited for towing and gives me extra payload capacity, which I ran out of with my 5.3.

    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
