Cheap Tailgate Light Install for the Kicker Speaker Panel

Recommended Posts

This is a simple install and takes 10 minutes (I did not find a write-up so hopefully this answers any questions others have). The hardest part is getting your gorilla mits in to access the trailer connector (add 10 minutes of frustration)

Lights used: (~$32) These were selected since the ad said the lights could be removed from the insert panel – better than paying $150 to GM for 2 LEDs and wiring

Tools Needed: Torx T20, T30

1.       Remove the 6 T-30 and 4 T-20 Torx screws holding the kicker panel on the tailgate and move onto the tailgate

2.       Locate the trailer lighting module in the second opening on the passenger side (red circle)

3.       I found it offered more room if you unscrew the tilt connector board (yellow circle)

4.       Unlock the connector by pulling the red tab up, remove the connector plug

5.       Take the supplied harness and locate the end with the two connectors together

6.       Connect one to the lighting module and the other to the connector you just removed, lock the connectors, reattach the tilt board

7.       Temporarily connect the lights to the other ends of the harness to test the circuit

8.       Assuming it is working, pull the rubber plugs out above the controls and USB area on the kicker panel

9.       These lights are directional so before you remove them from the panels confirm how the manufacturer had them installed in their insert panel

10.      Insert the lights in place of the plugs, route the pigtails from the harness and connect to the lights, Test again

11.       Zip tie cables if you want (I did not), replace the kicker panel
