The kid must just be new cause iv had a inspection license for almost 20 years and all we have to do is make sure the lights work and are aimed right we don't care what bulbs u have or anything I have never herd of anyone failing a car due to its light being after market or stock

HID's in a reflector housing is an automatic fail.

You might not have heard of a car failing but that doesn't mean it shouldn't. He is right - all lights that pass DOT testing MUST be marked with DOT approval somewhere (most are molded in the plastic lens but a sticker on the rear of the housing is allowed too). Also as Chev-mekanik said above an HID (and most LEDs) in a reflector housing should not pass either.

I'm not trying to start a war, just telling you what the law says. You're right that most shops won't bother to check and won't fail a vehicle unless the lights don't work.

Nope.

Technically they're all for "off-road use only". Not street legal unless they are DOT/SAE approved for street use.

To the GMC SLE guys running HID's, I ran a 35w morimoto kit in my SLE for a little over a year with no problems at all then all of a sudden my drivers side bulb and ballast burnt. Is this something I should expect being the SLE lights are on all the time? Loved the lights just don't want to have to replace every year.

Every time you get in your truck turn the auto lights off that's what I do and it seems to work that what I was told by a friend and he has had his hids working for 2.5 years now

I've had the same kit for 2 years, no issues. I never bother turning them off, just let them run. 39,000 miles and about 1400 hours on the engine, so they've been on that long. Did you jump start your truck by chance? Do anything with the electrical?

No never jump started engine. I have a sub and amp installed but I had that before the HID kit. Don't see why that would affect headlights. Not one for having to turn off auto lights everytime I get in my truck. May give the HIDs one more try maybe the kit was faulty or something.

Just don't buy cheep ones from Amazon some of them are ok I have a 15 gmc and have had my DDM tuning ones for months now if you go with them there about 125.00 for the canbus system no power relay needed just plug and play the capacitors an error eluminator are built in

Also the morimotos are very good never had them but a lot of guys on here love them iv used DDM for about 8 years now and never had a problem

I've had both DDM and Morimoto, and hands down the Morimoto have a much better build quality. Don't get me wrong, the DDM never gave me issues on my 02 Silverado but the Morimoto kit is much higher quality, I just felt better putting it on a 50k+ truck

Looks like Morimoto is about $170? However I hear the DDM is overseas and leads to longer lag time should I have an issue?

Any group buys going for Morimoto. I don't think I'm going to skimp. I'll upgrade fogs too.
