I just had this issue. Installed original strut nuts which are deeper than the ones that come with the bilsteins. 

 

Stock nut threads are at top and 1/4” space at bottom (aka no washers needed) if you kept stock nuts.

I wanted rake from the start because I tow and put heavy stuff in the bed.  Having the front end higher than the back even when loaded is a pet peeve of mine.  Hope this picture gives you more of an idea of the rake it has now.  I forgot to take before measurements, but after I'm 3" higher in the back.

I know it's just the photo, but your front tires almost look larger than the rear.

Just picked up the truck from getting the 5100’s installed.   It looks great! I’ll post some pictures after I get the tires installed on Monday. 

 

Quick question though....I noticed the steering is tighter now. I also hear what sounds like clicking type noise when I turn the wheel. I don’t Hear it outside the truck but I hear it in the cab when I mute the radio and listen. Did anyone else experience this?

 

i have not done an alignment. I’m going to get that done on Monday with the tires so hopefully that helps.

FYI use your stock nuts when installing bilstein 5100. The nuts bilstein sends usually bottom out on the strut rod threads. If you have a squeaking or banging / clinking when hitting bumps, especially after you put some miles on your 5100s.  If you can turn or move the black top hat below he nut then that’s probably the problem. 

 

First pic 15mm bilstien nut. See how many threads are at top. 

 

Second pic stock GM 18mm nut which is deeper and doesn’t need threaded down to end of strut threads. Aka no bottoming out.

Yeah the guy I took it to used the stock nuts. 

 

I did some more investigative work and the clicking noise is definitely from the steering assembly. I’m thinking the toe alignment on the wheels is out and causing some pressure and binding and that’s why I hear the clicking at low speed sharp turning like when I park versus general driving around where there’s no clicking at all. I’m thinking (hoping) an alignment will correct this.

I've been searching the internet for hours and I'm coming across all kinds of information.  After reading multiple manufacturer forums, the following information seems to pop up in every one:

 

1) The clicking/popping sound and feeling in the steering wheel is extremely common and seems to be a problem unique to electric power steering setups, not hydraulic power steering.  Multiple people are reporting this issue.  In fact, a guy I work with had this problem after installing his rough country leveling kit and I'm going to ask him about it on Monday at the office.

 

2) GM, Ford, and Toyota forums all describe the same problem after leveling trucks their trucks.  Rough Country is the most cited brand of level kit associated with the issue, but folks with Bilstein 5100's are reporting it as well.

 

3) Apparently you're supposed to cut the power to the electric power steering system before installing any kind of level because the work could potentially cause damage to the system.  I did not know this and I'm not sure the mechanic that installed my shocks knew this either.

 

I'm not saying this is definitely what I have going on, but the symptoms described are extremely similar.  I'm still hoping that the new tires and alignment solves the problem but the more I read, the more I'm starting to think that my electric steering assembly is screwed up now.

This questions is geared more to the individuals that left their truck at the stock height with 5100s. I do understand that the shock will absorb potholes and large bumps better, but cruising down the road, is the ride better?

Update on my popping steering wheel:  It does not appear that my leveling shocks caused this problem.  I spoke with 2 individuals that I know that have the same exact issue I'm experiencing.  Both said that theirs started before they even leveled their trucks.  Both have also driven tens of thousands of miles with the "popping" noise and it hasn't gotten worse.  I also spoke with a mechanic on the side and he seems to think that it's more of an annoyance and not likely to be an issue from a safety standpoint.  He said the only way to fix it is to replace the power steering assembly.  In reading this forum, multiple people have had theirs replaced in an effort to correct this issue and the sound ultimately came back.  It seems these power steering assemblies are just junk.  I'll keep this brief so that this thread stays on topic.  I'm keeping the Bilstein's as is on the 3rd setting.  I need to fix a loose ball joint so I can get a proper alignment, and then it's on to tires!  I'll come back here and post some pictures when all the work is done.

Ride is stiffer and more controlled. If you just want to replace shocks and not raise the truck buy the 4600s.

Not yet..I was on the pre-release email/list but I guess that didn't happen. They said they are getting more in Friday and should ship them out that day. I hope to have them early next week.

What is the consensus on the rear shocks and their orientation?  Traditionally the protective rubber boot goes up, but I'm reading in this thread that people are installing them with the boot down and the Bilstein logo rightside up.  People are saying this is per Bilstein's installation guidelines.  Is this correct?  I have a mechanic doing the install for me tomorrow and I want to make sure he does it correctly.

 

Edit:  I've been doing a lot of reading and everything I can find says to go with the direction that has the Bilstein logo reading correctly rightside up....in my case that would mean that the boot is to the bottom and shock body is to the top.  Seems to be in line with what everyone here is saying.

I don't think it really matters but I installed mine just like factory... boot on top.  I actually removed the label and flipped it so it reads correctly.

Same here. Label off, Boot up.

I drove around a while with them Boot down and no difference in ride or handling.

Boot up looks better and makes more sense.

    • consider doing electrical testing?  I would guess some power or ground wire/connection has a problem.   alldata.com has wiring diagrams, connector pinouts and diagnostic procedures you can use to find where the problem is.
    • can you tell if the reader is actually trying to get codes, and the pcm is reporting none, or is your reader just silently failing because it's not communicating with the pcm?
    • Any joy with this truck seems to be short-lived.   The CEL for P0172 ("bank 1" too rich) is now "intermittent".   I'm not sure where to check, or re-check, and my energy to keep chasing problems with junk is wearing thin. The P0172 seems to set as I'm coming to a stop, completely off the throttle, when fully warm. At least, that's what it's done the 3? times it's set.   Everything appears normal on the scanner EXCEPT long term fuel trim. There's only one bank on this vehicle because it's an OBD 1.5 with only one upstream O2 sensor. At idle, it's around -16.4% and will dip to -18% occasionally at idle or off-throttle. LTFT approaches 0 when throttle is held at 2500rpm. Short term appears normal, much closer to zero all the time. The LTFT tells me the engine is running rich at idle but compensating at higher load. But, why?   The EVAP purge valve doesn't appear to be leaking/sucking fuel vapor continuously. Is it sticking just as I come to a stop and the engine is choking on fuel vapor and sets the P0172? But that doesn't explain the persistently negative LTFT. Disconnecting the purge valve doesn't seem to make any difference.   I suppose that leaves another dang issue with the fuel injector. A leaking fuel pressure regulator, a new leak in the spider, or a leaking fuel injector/poppet valve I didn't see, or a small crack in one of the spider legs.   The vacuum line leading to the fuel pressure regulator doesn't have raw fuel in it. It doesn't even smell like fuel when it's pulled off, not until you suck air through it, then you can tell it leads to a fuel component. I'd consider that normal? Nothing is signaling this is a FPR issue from the outside, at least.   The oil smells like fuel but it's not building volume. I've noticed most oil in most engines smells like fuel to some degree so it's hard to say if the smell is an issue or not. Or if the engine just still smells like fuel because the crankcase was full of it a few hundred miles ago. But it's been changed twice since that original issue of the leaking fuel line dumping fuel into the intake.   Patience is running very thin. Every win seems to be accompanied by two steps backwards, or another issue that leads to removing at least the top half of the intake manifold. Enough! LOL
    • First off you mentioned "Toyo Says" and then gave the pressures 45/50, was this some person at the tire shop that pulled those numbers out of his head ?   Now of course I can't know your exact axle weights front and rear, however I have much the same pickup as yourself other than not knowing your starting weight as per the pounds the truck rolled out of the factory at due to the options yours did or didn't come with or what you have added beyond the extra tire weight. The correct way to know 100% where a person is at is by weighing each axle with the typical weight the vehicle is driven with and that means taking into account passengers and making sure you figure in a full tank of fuel and a little grace for whatever you may put in the bed "groceries" !    I am looking at and not that it really matters as all the tire companies use the same charts anyway, but I am looking at the comprehensive Toyo tire chart in the section that your tire falls under and I know it sounds confusing but your tire is not an LT metric tire like your factory tire but instead because its a standard inch measured tire its under a different category called an LT floatation series tire. That makes a difference as LT metric tires they don't want to see run below 35 psi at highway speed where as with the LT floatation series it can be run down to 25 psi on the highway as long as the weight on the said size of tire is agreeable with or less than that minimum 25 psi. It blows many people away that how is this physically possible, an empty truck for one thing and larger tires with the same size wheel diameter have a lot more air volume so they can carry the same weight as the smaller tire with less air pressure.    So my truck, I have the stock 275/65R20 wheels and tires and I have a bit of weight in the box with a bak flip cover and a rubber bed mat and some tools and spare gas. The front of my gas truck weighs a bit more than some trucks of the similar spec due to double batteries and alternators. However with full fuel and just me in the truck I am weighted such that I can run 40 front and 35 rear and so that is what I have done since day one.    If I base your truck at or slightly below the weight of my truck, in theory with your tires going by the tire chart you might be right around a minimum of 30 pounds front and 25 pounds rear. Of course that would hit pretty much minimum cold inflation pressure one could run with that tire size and a near empty truck. If you have access to an accurate weigh scale to do individual front and rear axle weights I would suggest you do that and make sure your topped up with fuel and whatever else in the truck before you weigh it and then you will have a great starting point to work off of and figure out what your bare minimum pressures are you can safely run. If you do much in the way of hot weather high speed driving, bumping up a bit for a safety margin is never a bad idea but just depends on what type of driving you do. I will include the Toyo chart and the floatation series sizes start on page 31. Without a doubt at these pressures I am speculating at minimum wise for your truck, it would most certainly ride very different then it did when you were using 55 lb front and rear.     https://www.toyotires.com/media/pxcjubjs/application_of_load_inflation_tables_20200723.pdf
    • Take an automotive stethoscope to the vacuum pump. Iirc those tick as well.
