Wow, HoosierZ, nice build. Waaayy better than the crap compressor I was using. 

 

I saw a guy, Mark Jenkins out of Maine, had a youtube video and used a Shankley compressor. It looked more like yours. I think all I could have done with that AutoZone special was Honda Civic coils, because it was bowing out worse than my boss's mother's knees!

Definitely don’t rely on the normal spring compressors that parts stores have. I built my own when I put Bilsteins on my ‘08. The screws on mine are 20mm (nearly 13/16”) and the hooks are high carbon steel. I also added safety pins to make sure the hooks couldn’t slip off the springs. The parts store compressors use 1/2”-5/8” screws and weaker cast or forged hooks.

I pulled the assemblies off and took them to a shop and had them swap the the tophats. After watching the guy do it I felt it was money well spent. I’ve swapped springs on a small car years ago so I’ve had that life experience.

Have you figured it out? I might have by accident. Revisit the strut tower bolt an tighten it again, if you couldn't torque it to specification which I think is 37 ft. lbs.  It has worked out for me which I could kick my self, plus got tired of the wife complaining. lol.

18mm socket for the 3 top nuts, 15mm for the bottoms. My info agrees with 14LTZ...37 ft/lbs, both top and bottom nuts.

 

Every job I do, I try to gather socket size and torque so that I can keep streamlining what tools I need to bring.

Have you figured it out? I might have by accident. Revisit the strut tower bolt an tighten it again, if you couldn't torque it to specification which I think is 37 ft. lbs.  It has worked out for me which I could kick my self, plus got tired of the wife complaining. lol.
For sure got the tq to spec. I'm betting its just these struts.

You call BS on anyone being able to do it at their home without issue? I call BS on your BS call. I am sure tons of people have knocked it out on their own at home, including myself. We used an air compressor to speed up the change with the spring compressors, didn't run in to issues and it was done in an afternoon. Was a little nerve-racking when compressed but went just fine, next time though if I ever have to do it again I will take them to a shop to knock it out.

Tyler... Really? You really think a auto parts store clamp wont bend. That's straight BS bro. I will not put someones life in danger. Just not gonna do that. Im not here to make things sound good. Its a shady at home diy bud. As seen it takes a stout clamp to fully compress these truck springs. That you wont find at an auto parts store. They all bend and that is the issue.

So I just purchased a 2018 Silverado LT2 this week and I am looking to do something about the rear shocks. I was going through this thread and other  on the forum and found a lot of information on rear shocks but most of them seemed to be for the 2014-2016 model years and I wanted to make sure I was getting good info for my year. On the outside my main "concern" with the rear Rancho shocks is they are pink. I don't know if that is the standard or they were painted but that is a problem for me. Also looking at them the lower "white" part is having the rusting issue that seems to be very common. As it appears that replacing the rear struts can be fairly inexpensive and an easy job to do myself I looking for recommendations for replacements. As far as I know the truck is stock height. It seems like a lot of the recommendations in the earlier model years were the Bilstein 5100s or 4600s, I was just wondering if that was still the case for the 2018. Also looking for options / opinions on what to do with current shocks as far as the rust and changing the color. Thanks

When my Ranchos rusted all to hell after the first winter, I pulled them off, cut the pink boots off, sanded and painted the shocks black, and put on some black bellows style boots.

My goal is to have 5100s all around.  I wanted to get rid of the ranchos since I got the truck.  I don’t care about leveling the truck, but if I can get a lift, why not?

 

I know I can get over 1.5 from the front on max.  I am thinking of replacing the rear block with a 2”.  I tow by boat and haul stuff from time to time... my truck is no mall crawler, I want to keep the rake.  
 

question is, if going max on front and the lift in the back, do I need to change or about anything else breaking or out of spec?  I am not trying to do a full lift, just get a better ride overall.  If I don’t do the lift, I will just put the front on the lowest setting and keep the rear block in place.

Installed the rear 5100 today. 15 minute job.  taking for a drive across the tracks and different things and it just felt better.  Have wanted to get rid of those other shocks since I purchased the truck and got tossed around on the freeway in Oakland... Going to let my local shop install the front.

If I am just planning on replacing the rear shocks would that have any effect on the warranty? the bumper to bumper warranty is still good for another year.

    • He is not saying that an SAE *W20 will have more viscosity than a *W40 due to MORE VII polymers. He is saying that although multiple *W40 may post in the PDS the same or similar 100 C and 150 C viscosities that the blenders choice of modifier TYPE and AMOUNT to get his chosen base to grade will not give identical real world viscosities in shear and at temperature. All will pass the SII test but not all will pass the 100 C HTHS (unpublished value) testing the blender does and relies on to get the required by law "percentage improvement' referenced to his last great work.    Tis the problem with the lie. Once told others are required to support it. 
    • I have a `25, 1500 that auto sets on incline. Never knew that at first. I have the electronic shifter. Just think if it didn`t do that? Unlike a mechanical shift that you can muscle out of park, how would you get this thing out? That would be a problem.   What I found out later is, I don`t have to push the button to release. Just put it in gear.   Setting parameters? Don`t know if it`s possible.

I usually set the parking brake (habit) when on flat ground for typical driving.    When backed down on the launch ramp to launch the boat and I place gear selector into Park, the parking brake activates automatically. My second nature is to set parking brake manually and noticed I was turing the parking brake off.  The parking brake appears to be setting itself automatically.   I looked all over my owner's manual and only found references to being on an incline and manually setting parking brake, or at times parking brake will be auto engaged, but nothing specific to my situation.    When is the parking brake automatically engaged?  Under what specific circumstances?  Can the auto set parameters be changed?     I like the auto set feature.  It would be nice if always engaged when shifted into Park and released when shifted out of Park (like my wifes 2025 RAV4).   Thanks!

Based on the 2000 samples in the SPEEDiagnostix database, increasing the oil viscosity in these engines, even those run on the track, showed no significant difference in results.   The smoking gun was in the oil chemistry. That is where the data shows higher instances of more wear. Molybdenum was the key; the higher the amount, the less the wear. Speed postulates that higher viscosity oils have more thickeners to artificially inflate their viscosity numbers. These thickeners lose viscosity under shear, and the result is that not all oils of the same viscosity have the same shear stability.   Having enough viscosity is the most important characteristic, but according to Speed, once that required viscosity level is reached, additive chemistry matters more than additional viscosity. Speed also states, oil pressure problems on the racetrack aren’t a viscosity problem; it’s an oiling system problem. Running a thicker oil is just a band-aid for an underlying oiling system problem.
    • Can it still be Assembled II?   Viscosity on the decline by various means. Heat on the rise making that worse. Engine RPM in the tank. Smaller motors with more boost trying to emulate an electric motor. Full torque, zero rpm. Then we will triple the OCI. Argh.    But wait....there is more. LSPI has pushed a shift from Ca to Mg and as that cost more PLUS the run to lower sulfur compounds the TBN is moving in the wrong direction for the increased OCI's demanded.    That not being enough to placate a demand for a parameter they can't measure the other sulfur bearing compounds are also under attack. That would be zinc and phosphorus sulfonate compounds. To some degree those are being replaced with boron esters and others, i.e. titanium ect. All of which have shorter service lives. And there there is the "Secrete Sauce" marketing for AW adds that 'Can't be detected by UOA's" but trust me because I (the blenders) never ever lie.    Spoiler alert; ALL additives are sacrificial! Smaller amounts of the old blended with less robust versions of the new do not equal longer service lives. So what are the blenders recommending? Wait for it.......   MOVING THE GOAL POSTS! OMG      Let's declare the long standing TAN/TBN crossover irrelevant and tell people that soot is a great 'graphite' based lubricant which can aid tribo films. Wait, what? Let's declare that the standards used for oxidation and nitration were to conservative and can be expanded. Let's tell them that because GDI fuel dilution, although being a VISCOSITY KILLER and an acid generator is actually okay because we have better base oils that limit viscosity failure limits. (Said knowing this is measured in fractions of a centipoise and in bases not commonly used in shelf oils)   Lying from the heart is not just the new normal but we have a public, a very young public, that is so ignorant of the facts and so sure of their "RESEARCH" into AI driven models base in regurgitated  instead of scientific research based unvarnished, peer reviewed FACTS that the incoming guard is loosing their grip on reality and the OEM's are tickled pink while the blends bend the knee.    You have an ever limited set of tools to work with. And sooner or later those will be taken from you as the API and the EPA strangle the last remaining fluids from the system. What you have left is your wits. If you care to use them.    At some point in the very near future it will not longer be possible to do "What is best for the machine", and be replaced with "The best you have access too". You WILL be rewarded with half the life and twice the cost. That isn't that hard to predict.
