Plasti dipping parts on your Truck

Dipped my bumpers today. Front bumper has some rough spots. I may try to lightly sand them down to smooth it out.

 

 

I've read that soaking a q-tip in acetone and lightly rubbing the rough spots will re-liquify the dip and allow it to lay down smoother. Haven't tried it. Here's my on-going attempt. I used a base coat of flat black (don't know if it was necessary) and then a few coats of charcoal grey (darker than the gunmetal grey and only available at dipyourcar.com) and then a top coat of satin clear.

 

One wheel left to go.

 

 

 

The charcoal grey with the satin top coat is pretty dang close to the factory plastic trim on the wheel wells and bumpers. I'm planning on dipping the chrome on the bumpers and likely the grill. If I don't like the grey, I can always hit it with black over the satin clear. I really need to hurry up and wear these SRAs out...... and get off my rear end and get the front windows tinted.

Not acetone, Xylene. Acetone dries much too fast and isnt recommended for plastidip. You can also use Naptha. Also a q-tip will work but the cotton fibers may come loose and stick in the dip. Its better to wear nitrile gloves and dip your finger tip in xylene and work it over the dip. Once you do that it will "ruin" the look of the dip and you will need to recoat the entire surface again to make it look even.

I ordered some from dipyourcar.com as it was the only place to get the charcoal grey color. After it has been on for a while, I think I'm going to spray black over the grey. The grey is pretty close to the factory trim in the shade, but it in the sun, I just don't care for it as much as I think I would black. I ordered the black and satin clear coat from Amazon.

 

 

What are people using to clean them? I drove some country dirt roads, and the automatic car wash did not do a very good job getting the road dust off. It is tough to wipe off since the surface is not flat and smooth.

I sprayed mine with turtle wax ice, it gives it a smoother feel, and gives it a layer of protection

I want to spray clear on my front bumper which is chrome. I have the sensors. Do I need to clean off the sensors aftwer or wil the dip not hurt them?

 

Can I spray the glossifer on after it is dry or does the dip need to be wet?

I'm going to be doing my from GMC logo on my truck soon. I've never used it before, Should I tape everything but the red off or do the entire logo and then cut the "red" part out?

You can spray over the sensors without issue. You can spray clear or color. Echavez has color matched his front and rear without any issues from his sensors

Yup. The stuff from Home Depot. As long as u only want white or black

Yep. And as mentioned Home Depot only carries white and black plastidip. Whereas they carry every color and option for flexidip. If you want to stick with plastidip tho then you'd have to check out your local automotive store (I find Pepboys has the largest selection of plastidip products)
