Chevrolet let the cat out of the bag today regarding GMC's "mystery hood scoop." The HD trucks are getting a new air intake that GM says will enable cooler air to enter the diesel engine. Cooler air is more dense, and thus offers slightly better power as part of the combustion process. Interestingly, the scoop is not the only intake. Rather, GM uses that to introduce about 60% of the air to the engine and also uses another intake that draws dryer air from an area near a front fender. GM says that this combination is the best becasue even if the front intake is blocked the engine gets air. Translation: "We couldn't draw enough from just the front."

The new air intake system was designed by GM to handle "...towing a maximum-weight trailer through the Eisenhower Tunnel on a hot, rainy summer day.” Demonstrating the wet-weather testing, GM offered the above image.

GM explained how it rids the intake air of water, saying "The air charge enters an expansion chamber containing a sharp, 180-degree turn on its way to the air filter housing. That creates a velocity change that causes humidity or mist to form larger, heavier droplets that are flung centrifugally against the outside wall of the housing. The collected water drains through a valve, while the air charge continues on to the filter housing and into the engine." GM went on to explain that big heavy raindrops are the easy part. It is the mist from tractor trailers on wet roads that is the hardest to purge.

that was a mystery in rigs for decades.

the big air cans hanging off to the side.

my dads 2016 pete looks like the original anteaters, with a 550hp engine and no side cans..

gets air from the sides of hood.

it seems to be related to precision of part making, tubes and angles, it was crude for a long time.

we all had to wait.

I like it.

So they are sticking to the older headlights also. Was hoping for the newer headlights like the 1500 series.
