Problem solved....below is my post copied from the “Denali Cluster in SLT” thread...

Well, as it sometimes seems to go, it’s the “easy” things that can bite us. After hours and hours of troubleshooting and some serious above and beyond “service after the sale” from MVI, the culprit was found out yesterday. It turns out that the new pins I had added in the cluster harness did not have a good connection to the new wires to which they were crimped. (Had I taken 5 minutes to check continuity BEFORE I installed these....hindsight...)

Fortunately I had a second set of terminated leads already made up and after checking continuity on each of them (one of the new ones was bad too; thankfully I had one to spare) I proceeded to replace the original set and just like that we went from this...

To this...

Thanks to those who offered their assistance but just as those posts were made I was making those elusive final (re)connections. So yes, with the right amount of patience, prayer (literally), and professional help this ambitious build can be done.

Thanks again to Anthony at MVI for the harness kit and the rock star level troubleshooting help! (FYI: MVI offers pins with terminated leads for a very nominal charge. IF there is a next time for me I’ll be adding those to my order.)

Also thanks to Chris at WAMS for the seamless integration of the cluster, HMI, and radio and the necessary front end communication to ensure I was sourcing the correct parts.

If I can be of assistance to others, especially those with Tahoe PPV’s (this is #3 for me), please let me know.

I recently got hit head on in my 2013 Caprice PPV and just got my replacement a 2016 Tahoe SSV. I am diving into this replacement cop car full speed. I purchased the i03 to i06 upgrade kit from MVI with full GM Navigation, Car Play, Sirius/XM Sat Radio, Antennas and all wiring harness's. I thought while I was at it I would go ahead and upgrade the Denali Gauge Cluster  from MVI also. Next I had my local Chevy dealer order me a Leather Wrapped Steering Wheel that has the audio controls on the right side (since the factory el cheap police steering wheel did not) with Heat and the Clock Spring to make it work. I have no ideas what I the people installing all these toys will run into but I have gained a wealth of knowledge in the last few days surfing the net on similar installs. The dealer installed the steering wheel and the audio controls didn't work with the factory i03/i04 radio and did not illuminate at night time either. The stereo shop got the stereo kit in today from MVI and once installed I will bring it back to the Chevy dealer to get the Gauge Cluster installed and hopefully all 3 to communicate with each other. I will keep you posted of my progress! Any help or ideas to make my Chevy Dealer grit their teeth less would be great also!

Great information in this thread

Have a couple of questions ....

I am starting with a 2014 WT with i04 package

I have added the rear camera , but have not paid to have it enabled yet .

I purchased the heated wheel with the proper (heated) clock spring.

I want to install the Denali dash later this year as well.

I have ordered the Alpine i209-GM for a radio replacement .

First question ....

Should I bother paying to have the HMI flashed for the backup camera since I will be using the Maestro going forward ?

Second question ....

Steering wheel controls, should I bother to run them to the stock radio at this point or just wait to run them directly to the Maestro ?

Third question .....

Will the Alpine unit display radio information to the DIC display ?

If it will not , then there is no point running those wires either ?

Thanks in advance

*** IO3/ Alpine restyle/ Denali cluster UPDATE ***

I received my Denali cluster again. It was acting up the first time. WAMS fixed it. I added the wire from the wheel to the cluster, and my issue with the steering wheel lights is solved. It was the communication. Next order of business is to reprogram the idata maestro. hopefully I wont need to add the other communication wires, or I can decipher how to run them directly to the maestro unit. The only issue I have, is that it says "Service power steering" every time I start the truck. A minor irritation, but I would like it sorted. Any ideas?

I had the “service power steering” come on on mine too. I think the cluster thinks it’s still in a Yukon with electric power steering. Correct for being in an HD without the electric steering and away goes the light.

You mean have wams correct it? Need him to enable my tire pressures as well. Good for the beach

Yes, have WAMS correct it. I had the opposite with TPMS on my 3500, they don’t have TPMS so I was getting the warning ⚠️ for that too. Chris definitely stands behind what he sells. He’ll get it right.

Thinking about this on my new International CV.....

Question:

Does following this wiring schematic also give illumination to steering wheel controls?

I have a 2015 WT that I upfitted pretty much exactly the same as OP did.

Had been patiently waiting to get all programmed parts back from WAMS and just spent a couple hours putting together thinking at this point it was all going to be plug and play! Sadly mistaken, steering wheel controls on new leather-wrapped steering wheel aren’t interfacing with cluster or radio...

This is why this community is the best because I thought I was going to be S.O.L. until I found this post! You guys are awesome. Hope someone can answer my question about illumination on steering wheel.

I believe the lights on the new wheel begin to work once you recieve your new cluster and plug it in.

@NitroDatsik, thanks for your response buddy.

I have replaced IO4, 4” screen, radio module, monochromatic DIC and standard steering wheel w/o audio controls with the following:

- IO5 / 2.5HMI (Programmed by WAMS)

- Radio Module (Programmed by WAMS)

- Color Z71 DIC (Programmed by WAMS)

- Leather wrapped steering wheel w/ full controls. (Non-heated)

The replaced parts mentioned above have already been installed and plugged into the original harnesses.

I am experiencing two bothersome issues currently as the truck sits:

1) Steering wheel illumination isn’t lighting up.

2) Bluetooth will connect, I can hear/receive incoming calls BUT can’t communicate. The other side can’t hear my voice. Also, no voice commands function either. (Steering wheel command and Siri AppleCarplay not receiving input)

Disclaimer: I have NOT started/completed the modified wiring that needs to be done in order for steering wheel controls to properly function. Will doing this resolve the issues I’m experiencing or am I missing something?

I am hiring a mobile electronics technician to do the wiring/splicing needed and want to make sure everything is done in one shot!

Hopefully @Harlech , @pgamboa , @GTPprix , @richamor Or any other pros can give some further insight. ?

To reiterate; I have a 2015 2500HD WT w/ IO4 option code. Huge thanks to WAMS for the programming and getting my project closer to completion.

Do you not have onstar perchance?

Honestly, not sure if the truck came with OnStar. Never subscribed to it. I took some photos of options sticker and interior for further reference.

The Bluetooth input/output on voice worked fine with original IO4 so I’m stumped as to why it’s not functioning now.

*tried uploading photo of mic above driver side visor but wasn’t successful. It’s there though.

Steering wheel won't light up until the connection to the cluster is made.

    • Progress... sort of.   Intake is disassembled, spider is out, fuel lines removed. Used a torch on the stripped screw with the lower intake off, much easier when I've got the intake sitting on my workbench, I made it talk. Walked right out with a pair of vice grips once it was nice and toasty hot.   New parts are piling up on my service cart waiting to be installed. Distributor, temperature sensor, new gaskets, fuel line kit, themostat, water neck.   My new pickle is I don't want to spend $600 on a replacement spider. I'm not sure IT is bad. I'm probably splitting hairs. Or it's $300 to send mine away and another 3 weeks of the truck just sitting. I have half a mind to assemble everything with the old spider to see if I can get away with just replacing the fuel pressure regulator to be safe. The obvious issue was the gushing high pressure fuel line which will be replaced. Getting to the spider really isn't that hard, and now I know what I'm doing , swapping it would be a breeze should it absolutely need one. Stupid, or smart?   The part that gives me pause is replacing the distributor. Well, it's already out. And I didn't mark it, whoopsie! Engine was at TDC when I removed it, I know that, so upon correct reinstall the metal tip on the rotor should point to the TDC mark on the distributor because that's where it was pointing on the old distributor. Worst case I'm a tooth off and have to re-stab it.   But then, what? I assume the truck will start. It doesn't appear the timing can be set. Here's the problem: These distributors can't be rotated but a degree or two, by design. What I read is Cam ****** needs to be -2 to +2 degrees, ideally at 0 (and checked/set above 1000 rpm). There should be enough wiggle to get that properly set, but checking the reported value is another potential issue. My Actron 9185 scanner says it supports enhanced GM PIDs and Cam ****** is one of them but it's unclear that I'll be able to correctly see it over OBD 1.5. I can see why people end up junking these things with life left in them. They're an absolute nightmare with tweener-year diagnostics/electronics and unobtanium parts.   Fingers crossed it starts and idles nicely. There can be hope, right? I'ma buy a lottery ticket the same day just in case.   Next steps..DO IT. I have not installed an intake before so I've been reading and watching a lot. Some say NO RTV except on china walls, some say DO RTV on water ports but not fuel/air intake. 1/4 or 3/8 bead on China walls? I think my strategy will be, obviously, RTV china walls with overlap on the gasket corners. Chapstick-style RTV the water ports. Leave intake ports dry. The only set of intake gaskets I could find locally are Edelbrock performance gaskets (uh...for an asthmatic 190hp V6? LOL) so we'll see how they do.   #NoToolLeftBehind. It took an hour, but my recovery mission for my deep 10mm socket was successful. It had rolled down the bellhousing and wedged itself between what I think are the fuel lines? I couldn't see it at all, but with a junk antenna I had laying around, I blindly went poking/sweeping for it, heard it clink, raised the truck, and caught a sliver glimpse of chrome with a flashlight way up there in Narnia. I had pushed it farther along the lines holding it captive, but within access of severely improvised tools, poking and cursing at it to finally knock it free to where I could get a fingertip on it to bring it home.    Not much to see.

    • It wouldn’t have happened if the government hadn’t mandated outrageous fuel mileage standards. It does very little for the consumer. It adds cost. Back during Covid there was a chip shortage. They gave a rebate for your truck if it didn’t have the chip to turn on cylinder deactivation. It was 50$ because at best you may see 1/2 a mile increase per gallon. Splitting hairs each fuel mileage trick wasn’t mandated. The government doesn’t do the engineering work and say use this until it’s already in use and they like it. The fuel mileage was mandated. And those add ons the results. There’s a mandate and they are the results.
