1999 Sierra 2500HD Outer Tie Rod Replacement

Recommended Posts

I needed to replace the outer tie rod on my 1999 GMC Sierra 2500 HD. The problem arose when I noticed that when tightening the tie rod connected to the knuckle, the rubber boot would just collapse, thus would not contain any grease and give me in impression that it would quickly fail. It seems to me that the hole diameter is much larger than the tapered stud on the replacement outer tie rod. It is my belief that the knuckle is aftermarket as well since I have never had this issue with many other vehicles. The GMC is lifted and the only name that I can find on the after market components are "BCD".

Can someone please assist in finding a replacement outer tie rod that would work. I have seen other outer tie rods from aftermarket vendors but have not seen the specifications of the stud sizes to see if they would work.

Thanking you in advance....

Most lift kits re-use stock steering linkages. 1999 2500 would be a non HD as well. HD trucks didn't come until 2001.

Got any pictures of the steering linkages and the knuckle to post here?

I would suggest getting some calipers and measuring the two pieces (the tie rod shaft and the hole in the knuckle).

Maybe you got the wrong part, maybe the lift kit uses a different tie rod, maybe the P.O. installed a different knuckle?

Maybe also compare the tie rod you took out with the new one...might be a maker/part number on the old one, and it would be something to show the parts guy to make sure the next part will work...

15H Driver - I always thought I had a "HD" because when going to part stores, the 6.0 engine that I have only shows for 1999 Sierra 2500HD. I am in no way an expert so I will succumb to your explanation. I have taken pics and the knuckles seem to have the 9073 stamped on them. I have also taken a pic of the good outer tie rod but did not see any number stamped on it.

Davester - If I don't get anywhere soon, I will get a caliper and do what you suggest. I have always needed a measuring caliper so now seems like a good time to get.

Does the truck have a lift kit in it at all? Just aftermarket wheels? Also, any part # from the rod end you purchased?

Yes, my GMC has a lift of 6 inch suspension lift. I indicated earlier that the lift might be a "BCD" which is incorrect, the lift is from "RCD". I do have aftermarket rims and tires. The part I purchased was an autozone part "ES3493". I have since purchased another part from NAPA and hopefully this will do the trick. The knuckles on the truck are definitely non-stock since the brake lines mount is not wide enough for the installed knuckle. When I attempt the install over the weekend, I will measure everything and add to this discussion.

I think I may have figured out your issue.

Additional Information:

-Vehicle manufacturing year must be after 8/2000 and have large tie rod ends. Models produced prior to 8/1/2000 require an upgrade to the large tie rod ends. Call for additional details.
-Recalibration of the speedometer, ABS and stability control systems (if applicable) will be required by an authorized GMC/Chevy Dealer
-Must enlarge lower control arm sway bar end link mounting hole to 3/4”
-Will not work on vehicles equipped with rear steering
-Some models may require an exhaust modification to clear the front drive shaft
-Full time 4WD models may require additional modifications.
-Factory shocks are re-used with ki/kit does not come with additional shocks.

So. Being you have a 1999 2500 non HD truck, early builds used the 1500 tie rod ends. The lift kit knuckle must be set from RCD to use the 2001 2500HD tie rod ends, which are larger. So, you need one of the follow part #s. OEM rod kit 15891515, AC Delco 89048972 (45A0834) Professional, AC Delco 88876340 (46A0834A) Advantage, NAPA ES3609.

Thank you very much 15HDriver. I was able to find a different site (https://rcdlift.com/) but the site did not have as much detail as the site you provided. I did request assistance but did not get any yet. I do appreciate your help and diligence and wish the 4x4 gods bestow good will upon you.

That other site might be just an RCD re-seller from the looks of it.

I settled on the part from NAPA (NCP 2693171) and replaced both tie rods. My truck has never handled so well and I am very happy to finally find the correct solution.

When replacing the passenger side, I found fabricated sleeve to "jimmy rig" a fix (picture).

A little history is that I have had the tie rods replaced by a couple of truck repair businesses and each did not last nor had the outcome I had wished. Now we know why. Sometimes to get the job done right, you have to do it yourself. Thank you everyone.
