So as i sit here in the stealership getting some maintenance done (don't worry they had a special) i see a 2018 tahoe. I ask the sales rep if I can see if my phone will wirelessly charge.  And guess what? IT DOES...

 

So it looks like i will be upgrading to the new charger but before i decide to shell out my hard earned money has anyone successfully gotten GM to replace this under warranty with the 2018 module?

A good argument to support this action are the prices of the modules:

 

2016-2017 module 23248791 List $252.78 Wholesale $161.38

2018 module 13521066 List $152.96 Wholesale $97.65

 

So... it is significantly cheaper for a much better operating part. Things that make you go hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmnnn.

The "body" portion of the new module is overall thinner than the previous module.  The connector area, they are basically the same thickness/depth.  Theoretically, it would fit as long as the "footprint" is the same as the original Impala module.

Thanks so much. I literally just received the module and it does indeed fit. Yay!  Well, at least without the connector installed. Still waiting to receive my adapter harness from Phil

Got the harness today (thanks Phil) and found that everything fits and works perfectly. It was literally plug and play. This is on a 2017 Impala btw

I can’t tell from the picture but I need the female end that is the same as the 14-17 single coil charger as I want to make a harness up and have the male end for the new charger.  Or if it is easier I can buy the whole harness from you but would like to do one or the other quickly.  Thanks Phil

I am out of stock of harnesses.  Mouser has a 3-4 week lead time for more material.

Got mine installed today.  Was waiting for a warmish day.  Worried about all the plastic being brittle and what not.  First thanks to Phil for making the adapters.  Made the process simple as heck.  Also thanks to him for the reco on the pry tools to use.  Second, it was an easy operation.  Took 20 minutes and I was methodical about "prying" open the console.  Everything fit back together like a glove.  I have a Pelican Shield case.  Thick and durable.  Even worked with that and it sits at an angle because it's so big.  It would flash on and off so I bought a smaller case so it would fit into the space provided.  Very pleased with the new set up.  My two cents.

I called GM Customer Care 1-800-462-8782.
I went to dealer and asked them to assess my wireless charging module as it has never worked for me, regardless of the phones used with or without cases, and both on and off of their approved list that was released January 2018.

(Even though the truck was sold in 2017, so retroactively becoming selective with approved devices? Like lol, what?)
They tested it and used EL-51755 Test Tool, a small tool that to my analysis is designed to sit a wireless receiver in just the right position completely flush with the charging mat in order to get a connection over the single coil, and which indicated the charging module was working properly.
I then asked two of the service men who had approved phones to place their phones in the charging mat. Neither worked, with or without cases.
I also walked them over to a 2018 same exact trim as mine, and had them replicate the process. The phones connected instantly, with or without cases and with plenty of variance in positioning.
While they understood the situation they had to deny replacing the module with a 2018, as per their official testing it was working as intended.
I informed them that while I understood they are following official process, there is clearly a valid issue at hand and would be contacting GM Customer Care.

I called GM CC and gave a detailed description as above.
Within 24 hours the agent assigned to my case returned my call, although I missed it.
Since they are closed weekends I returned the call today, and re-explained my situation. The agent was friendly, understanding, and said he would contact my local dealer.
Within 30 minutes a service man from my dealership called, said some GM department he wasn't familiar with was calling him telling him to approve "something with my phone".
I returned this call within 15 minutes. Unfortunately this conversation was a bit deferring in nature, the guy was a bit belligerent in asking if my phone was on the approved devices list, and made some other hostile comments, basically presenting a "not my problem" and "this is how it is" attitude.
He would be happy to replace it with a 2017 module, but when I specified 13521066 he got upset and stated to me that it was a 2018 part and as he told me before he couldn't order it.
I told him I would prefer to contact GM CC and clarify things.
I recontacted my agent at GM CC, updated him on the call with the dealer, and stated clearly that my intent is to have GMC provide for me, under warranty replacement, a 2018 module part # 13521066 and that I will install it myself as I am quite sure the servicemen would gripe about the harness plug being slightly different.
I simply want my vehicle to function as advertised, and it is also well within the bumper to bumper warranty (which covers electronics).

I will update as things progress.

Phil let me know when you have an adapter available again.
Whether I get a 2018 module out of pocket or under warranty this will definitely be replaced.
This should honestly be a recall for our trucks, very dishonest to advertise something and to become aware it isn't working and then even try to  cover it up with an "Approved Devices" list post date.

    • No such thing as regenerative braking on a pure ICE vehicle.     Regenerative braking is the re-capture of energy from electric motors and stores it in the battery pack.  So hybrids, PHEV and EVs have regenerative braking.     What you are seeing is the charging system changing modes is all.  Its likely entering charge mode for some sort of reason is all.  All of the charging modes will be listed below.   As for L10 vs D.  L10 turns off automatic grade braking.  L10 puts you in control of grade downshifts where in D it will automatically do it based on brake pedal position and other factors.  Otherwise L10 and D drive exactly the same aside from that one aspect.    Battery Sulfation Mode The BCM will enter this mode when the interpreted Generator output voltage is less than 13.2 V for 45 minutes. When this condition exists the BCM will enter Charge Mode for 2–3 minutes. The BCM will then determine which mode to enter depending on voltage requirements.   Charge Mode The BCM will enter Charge Mode when ever one of the following conditions are met:   Windshield wipers are ON for more than 3 s. Climate Control Voltage Boost Mode Request is true, as sensed by the HVAC control module via serial data. High speed cooling fan, rear defogger, and HVAC high speed blower operation can cause the BCM to enter the Charge Mode. The estimated battery temperature is less than 0°C (32°F). Battery State of Charge is less than 80%. Vehicle speed is greater than 145 km/h (90 mph) A current sensor malfunction exists. System voltage is determined to be below 12.56 V When any one of these conditions is met, the system will set targeted generator output voltage to a charging voltage between 13.9–15.5 V, depending on the battery state of charge and estimated battery temperature.   Fuel Economy Mode The BCM will enter Fuel Economy Mode when the estimated battery temperature is at least 0°C (32°F) but less than or equal to 80°C (176°F), the calculated battery current is less than 15 A and greater than −8 A, and the battery state-of-charge is greater than or equal to 80%. Its targeted generator output voltage is the open circuit voltage of the battery and can be between 12.5–13.1 V. When fuel economy mode is active, the generator is not charging, only maintaining open circuit battery voltage. The BCM will exit this mode and enter Charge Mode when any of the conditions described above are present.   Headlamp Mode The BCM will enter Headlamp Mode when ever the head lamps are ON (high or low beams). Voltage will be regulated between 13.9–14.5 V.   Start Up Mode When the engine is started the BCM sets a targeted generator output voltage of 14.5 V for 30 s.   Tow/Haul Mode (if applicable) Pressing the Tow/Haul Mode button located on the center stack, the vehicle system voltage is raised and the remote (non-vehicle) battery will be charged. Having the headlamps on will raise the system voltage and if the Tow/Haul button is applied it will not serve any purpose. The voltage is regulated between 13.9-14.5 V.      
    • Hello from Australia Just sharing that there is now a way to delete the active shutters entirely with just a plug in module. Opens up tons of room to light bars etc.
    • I have an observation and a question... 1) I watch the voltage closely because I have had to dial in the cut-in/cut-out voltages of the battery separator to my camper.  The "smart" charging drives me nuts.  Anyway, I noticed that when coasting for a while, and especially if lightly using the brakes (though not necessary), the voltage goes up from mid/high-13 volts to mid/high-14 volts.  Then it drops back down after stopping or going again.  Consistently!   The only explanation I can come up with is REGENERATIVE BRAKING!  Well, maybe that's a little bit of an exaggeration, but it's certainly free extra battery charging.   2) Driving on mountain roads I will use L and vary the max gear.  Things straighten out and I end up in L10.  Sometimes I leave it there for a while.  Is there any difference between L10 and D?   
    • Do you think this width might affect the chalk test with a higher pressure closer to 65psi? I think lowering the pressure makes sense to get the tread to lay flatter
