Buy now or wait until 2019?

I'm bought a used 2014 and put zero down so I could get a 2019 when they're out assuming I like them ...people say first year models are bad but I've never had too many issues.

Probably a different amount then you....but I promise you your truck isn't perfect either because you waited 1 or 2 years longer then I did

I see brand new "better year" trucks on here constantly with problems I have not experienced

I brought my '16 in for a service...the shop said they were dreading the new 10 speeds. They hate the 8 apparently. Guy seemed relieved that I was only in for a service and did not want them to tinker with the transmission. Take that how you will...only one guy at one shop, but....

I have a 2014 with 2 years left on the extended warranty so I am going to wait to see what the 19's look like before I do anything . There prolly won't be any rebates when the 19's first come out so if money is a issue you might want to get a 18 . I am sure there would a ton of rebates on those . My own 2 cents I can't see me buying a 18 because it's not much different than my 14 . Except for the front end change and a few more minor things .

How many issues has your 2014 given you ??

Asking because I have a 2014 also and

Since half of people on here believe that they're just the worst trucks ever but the 2016 or newer are just perfect

Yrah, total BS...i have an early build 2014 (Aug 13) and my truck has been great. Someon here made a great point, i see just as many 2016 owners complaining about the same issues as 2014 owners. First year build vehicles are not the gloom and doom people make it out to be.

There will be deals on the 2019 since A) truck sales have been declining the past 12 months and B) the truck market is ultra competitive. Ford will drop their prices since the F-150 will no longer be the new kid on the block forcing GM to do the same to remain price competitive. I got $10K off mine easily, months after the 2014s came out.

I have had many issues with my truck .. blower motor ... 4 wheel drive issues ... etc .. Just since my extended warranty kicked it in I had the radiator replaced ..4 wheel drive module .. New front calipers and rotors and a new crack shaft seal .. The warranty has already paid for itself .

Personally, I would wait.
I bought my '16 Reg Cab Long Box optioned just how I wanted it back in September, but if GM goes forward with putting a diesel in the 1500, like they should have done years ago, I would like to trade mine in for a 2021 or 2022.
Up to you really. I hope they don't wreck the appearance on the new ones however, spy shots dont tell much.

Yep.. Not much to see . All the test mules have been covered up pretty good . I did see a article and video where someone ran up to a test mule at a redlight and put a magnet on the bed of the truck . It's says it was steel ?

Just buy a new one each year that way you do not get tired of it. No big deal.

Well, if you can wait, I would. If you need a vehicle, the current trucks are great too.

Waiting gives you two great options you don't have now. First, you could get the new model if it's what you're looking for. (Which you'll find out once more info comes out) Or, if not, you can get a killer deal on last years model. Everyone will be clamoring for the new one and the dealers won't want to have the old stock sitting around. Either way is a win to me.

At least wait until you can see what's different, even if they haven't hit the lots. A decision with information is always better than one with guesses.

The only caveat to this is if you require a truck in a very particular configuration. If you decide on the older model once the new one is out, you'll have to work with what's on the lots. It's a gamble, but if you don't need a unicorn, I bet you'd be okay.

Sorry for the story...

I had a '14 Sierra and now a '16 Silverado. Similar minor issues (no GM fixes on anything that plagued the '14). I like the '16 more and I learned a lot from the initial purchase.

I've had great service from both dealers in the same town. Here's my breakdown;

2014 Sierra Double Cab AllTerrain SLE, 5.3L, 3.43 6speed, 6.5' box, Bought December 2013, Sold May 2016

  1. I ran into electrical, specifically trailer brake, issues. I dumped it after GM did 6 hrs of troubleshooting and couldn't find the issues. I personally believe someone knicked the harness on installation or during a service but I could never prove it.
  2. GM also pulled the driveshaft 3-4 times for a "chirp" when it shifted. I also thought it was u-joints but the truck did it from about 5k miles until I traded it.
  3. The exhaust was replaced as the exhaust valve made a whistle noise, GM did this without hesitation. Unfortunately it was actually the driveshaft noise mentioned above that drove me insane.
  4. The leather tore apart at the seams on the driver side seat near 50k miles. Wear/tear, and poor material selection was the culprit.
  5. The alternator was changed as it had a bad bearing. GM replaced without hesitation.
  6. Cargo light took on water, the seal is poor as most of you know.
  7. The onyx black paint was poor from factory, GM paid to get the front bumper, rear tailgate, and area around the cargo lamp resprayed. The shop attributed it to poor prep or humidity when the work was done.
  8. USB port issues, fixed by dealer.
  9. Intellilink was extremely slow and would randomly shut off at times.
  10. The truck never rode well, very stiff in the front and too bouncy without weight in the pan.
  11. Pedal flex, this truck didn't show it as bad because I used to extend the pedals out as far as possible (adjustable). I guess the threaded rod would push against the firewall giving it more security at full extension.
  12. Shifting issues and hard shifts especially into 2nd and 3rd.

2016 Silverado Crew Cab Z71, LT, 5.3L, 3.43 6speed, 5'8" box, bought May 2016, current vehicle

  1. Whistling noise caused by the exhaust valve, just like the '14. I ended up cutting it out instead of dealing with it.
  2. Poorly mounted corrosion system (dealer's fault). Remounted this myself.
  3. Whistling noise around the engine, also seemed like intake leak or vacuum issue but I could never figure it out. This was accentuated by the fact there is noise getting into the cab around the driver side feet firewall area.
  4. Shifting issues like the '14, unable to decide what gear to be in.
  5. USB connection issues as well.
  6. Pedal flex much worse as this truck has no adjustable pedals. Did the DIY solution found on this website and seen tremendous increase in response.
  7. Rough ride like the '14, replaced all struts with bilstein 5100s, slight increase in ride quality but still very live rear end over bumps.

What I learned from the experiences with the dealer.

  • Convenience deals are anything but convenient.
  • Dealer would not pass my old truck for lights on in the dash. It was winter time and the only light was the TPMS due to the winter tires, but they would not give me a slip after paying $150 for an MVI, and 2 hours on the ramp.
  • A lot of accessories are not available for viewing. I would not suggest buying any items without seeing them in person as I bought the wrong style of mudflaps.
  • Both dealers had sat me down and worked out a payment plan, prior to adding warranty prices, rust proofing/corrosion inhibitor, and any other fees or taxes accrued in the deal. Some of these fees were negotiable, others were not. This was only finalized after being sent to another office with a finance employee. Fortunately, I learnt my lesson the first time.
  • Do not accept your vehicle delivery without ALL accessories, items, and any other work to be completed. This was a mistake by me both times, as I had to make multiple return trips and harass my salesman for parts and repairs. (There was damage to the window moldings upon delivery).
  • GM/Chev did nothing to repair any issues found in 2014 to my 2016 "remodeled" vehicle.
  • You have to do your research on here and go in with a list of problems prior to making a purchase. If these commonly found mistakes/flaws are still present. GM does not deserve your service IMO.
  • Test drive the vehicle for a week, or a week. You will pay on it for the next 36-80 months of your life and it is a big commitment. If you are not satisfied with absolutely everything, make sure it is addressed.
  • Buy any and all accessories from the dealer to be included in your price for a couple of extra dollars/month, and applicable warranty.

In the end, research the product, ensure the issues from '14 onward are not present in your brand new truck, and be happy with your decision. First year product versus 2nd/3rd year makes little to no difference. It is near the end of the model years they will actually have implemented the solutions.

The new truck may be different but not necessarily "better" other than the infotainment stuff. 2 years ago I did an extensive comparison of the 'new' F-150 vs. the Silverado, aluminum vs. steel, turbo v-6 vs. 5.3l. Conclusion - two different approaches that lead to basically the same truck performance-wise.

Silverado was cheaper so that is what I got.

BTW, the Silverado has been flawless. Almost regret the having the lease end in 6 weeks.
