Just wanted to share my thoughts after owning my '18 Silverado Z71 for a little over 3 months now:

1. I love this truck. Compared to my old '04 Dodge 1500 this thing rides like a Cadillac. I honestly never thought a truck could ride this good. I know some people complain about the stock rancho shocks and z71 suspension but to me it seems to ride exceptionally well. One thing I have noticed though is quite a bit of body roll in corners, more so than in my old dodge, but that could be because of the light tires that come stock?

2. I'm impressed with how capable this truck is offroad. Now I know most people will say that the airdam is too low, not enough ground clearance, etc. but honestly for the vast majority of people I think this truck has all you need. It's gotten me to my campsites, taken me to some great hiking trails, and allowed me to scout my hunting areas for this fall. All the things that I thought it couldn't do stock since my old truck had 33's and a leveling kit. Of course, It's not going to take on any hardcore offroad trails in Moab but that's not the reason I bought the truck and even then I'm sure someone could mod it enough to take on any trail out there.

3. The technology in these new trucks is great! I know a lot of people talk about the AFM system being annoying or intrusive but honestly I never even feel it! It's crazy that all of these new advancements allow me to get an average of 17.5mpg which is incredible compared to my old truck's 11mpg average. Apple CarPlay and bluetooth have also been great to have so far! It's nice being able to make phone calls hands-free, play a song using my steering wheel controls, and send texts by voice.

Overall I am just impressed with this generation of Silverado trucks. I have owned 2 chevy trucks before, a 1984 C10 and a 93 s10 and dang it feels good to be behind a bowtie again. Just wanted to share my love of Chevrolet and my truck with you guys and I hope y'all are out there enjoying your trucks as much as I am! I'd love to hear your experiences and thoughts as owners!

2018 loaded out GMC SLT, CrewCab with standard bed, big boy 6.2 that I traded my loaded out 16 DMax for and I absolutely love mine too. Very powerful and leveled too, Custom wheels and BFG KO2’s and lots of extras.

As resourceful as they are, one thing to keep in mind about these forum groups is this;

Out of every 100 owners of a certain year/ make/ model of truck, you might see approx 5-10 people have a moderate to severe issue with their truck, and have had issue confirmed by the other 4-9, if that makes sense. The other 90-95% usually range from saying no issues at all, to maybe a couple of minor things. There are exceptions of course, but for every complaint I see about AFM, for example, there are 8-10 owners saying they’ve never had an issue. I’ve heard about this huge vibration issue, or ‘Chevy shake’ as it were, and have yet to run across anybody that drives these style trucks that has the issue. And I did a ton of research before we purchased our 17 Sierra Elevation Crew. It’s just nice to know that when you do run into an issue, there are others out there that more than likely have the same problem, and possibly know of a fix or more pertinent info on said subject. Glad you like the truck!

Love my 2018 as well. I came from an 06 2500 HD LT Duramax. Lived that truck but it was just showing it's age what not.

The air dam don't bother me either. That is one of the reasons your gas mileage is so good.

The only thing I have done to mine so far is linex spray in bed liner and rust proofing from ziebart. I really want this truck to look good for years to come. My 06 I bout used and already had some flaws from previous owner.

My next mod will be a tanaue cover. Adventually want to level and add larger rims and tires.

I enjoy these types of threads.  Before I bought mine I read a lot of horror stories on here trying to check out the reliability and such.  Like mentioned, no one comes onto a forum to talk about how much they love their truck (rarely), its usually to help diagnose a problem so you hear all of these issues that are maybe 10% of the population that own one.  I absolutely love mine as well!  I came from a 2000 3/4 ton Yukon and this 1/2 ton rides way better, with the NHT package it will out tow my 3/4 ton, and gets TWICE the fuel mileage!!  Can't beat that!

I'd recommend a Bakflip MX4 when you start looking at tonneau covers...I loved mine before I switched to a topper...(or just get you a topper, you wont regret it!)

Congratulations, looks great! A bit of advice, my truck came with 20” wheels, I leveled which then I put on one size larger tires causing rub, purchased new 20” wheels with different offset and now no issues “but” I wish I had bought 18” wheels for smoother ride and more sidewalk to protect the new rims better.

Congratulations on your new truck. I’ve never personally run into anyone having issues with their trucks, only here. Most issues are after modifications done and then years later dealing with the results.

I agree these are great trucks. I am currently looking for a new one but struggling because my '15 is perfect and has no loan attached!  Unfortunately we've grown attached to the RV lifestyle and need a heavier tow vehicle!  This forum has admittedly increased my concerns about buying.  I think test driving a new version of my current truck shouldn't be for the purpose of checking for malfunctions.  I could quite happily deal on a new truck without taking the salesman for a drive while telling him about the features of gm trucks  Now I feel I must check for that elusive shake!

A key aspect of test driving has always been to check for issues regardless of the vehicle.  I did consider changing my truck this year and I test drove  2 Crews/2 double cab 1500 and even took out a 2500 Silverado drove 5 vehicles in total and not one had an issue...

Many people including yourself look to the half ton for towing but after having all of them, Diesel is the way to go if you enjoy towing especially long distances. I had my DMax for two years with impeccable performance that no half ton could ever compare to “BUT” I will say that unless you tow a lot I’d stick with the half ton with the max tow and I think you actually have to specifically ask for the flex fuel version for the 5.3 cause now it’s an option lol. Either way, good luck on your future purchase, today’s GMC trucks are the best trucks from GM period.

I always do go for a test drive but not with the expectation of finding a mechanical issue.  It is more to see if the comfort and performance of that particular model is suitable for my needs.  Switching between a '15 gm 1500 to a '18 gm 1500 will not be a significant change for me and I could quite easily buy without a test drive,  if not for the problems other members on this forum have reported.

You’re absolutely correct,

My 14 had flat tire rattle until I switched tires out.

My 16 DMax “never had a problem but only got rid of it cause no one wanted to go out in the fifth wheel anymore so yeah, over kill.

And my 2018 6.2, well let’s just say, I’m very very happy and plan on keeping it and purchasing another diesel when the new ones come out in 2022 [emoji39]

CYA

Unfortunately the way of the world.

When I bought my used 2012 in 2015, the dealer let me take it home overnight.

I did a thorough test drive, you should to.

    • I know when I was looking around last year to see if someone handled Amsoil gear oil to buy at the retail level which of course means full price. I found an independent shop that works a lot on GM/Duramax pickups and they did not bring in the 75W-85 as they just stuck to the 75W-90 for the front and rear as a standard practice for the HD trucks which makes sense anyway for the higher hp/torque diesel and pulling heavy loads in four wheel drive. I haven't changed my diff oils yet but still plan on using the 75W-85 for the front diff as I highly doubt I will be beating on the truck and figured for my use type the bit thinner oil would be to my benefit for the winter for that slightly less drag. Very different weather here all winter vs northern Washington near the coast, that's for sure.
    • Ok that confirms the extra quart theme they are still going with which must mean they have noted some initial use more so then some engines and probably the bigger factor in all of this probably isn't the engine so much as its the insane distance or OLM that lulls a lot of the driving public into driving their new vehicle off the lot and not even doing one short interval oil change because the manufacturer doesn't say different and if the dealer follows that logic as well. Selling the rarely needing to be serviced concept seems to go over well with the public that wants to get away with as little as possible for dollars spent on the vehicles maintenance and I bet there are 3.0 engines just like other vehicles out there that never have their oil checked by the owner which goes back to why they probably felt the need to add that extra quart to avoid a costly theme.    Speaking of cutting filters open, it was probably over two years ago now that a youtuber who buys vehicles to do longer term reviews and pulls a fifth wheel through the mountains of Colorado on summer trips and that becomes part of the testing. Anyway he had a GM HD with the 6.6 gas and a Ford 250 with the 7.3 gas at the same time and of no surprise the Ford had more power etc but somewhere along the way in the few thousand miles he put on the truck, he changed the oil and was seeing glitter and cut open the filter and yeah, things were not looking spectacular. The truck about that time or soon after seemed down on power compared to what it had been and then threw some engine code, I expect the cam/lifters were failing and so he brought the truck back to the dealer and made some deal to get out of it as he knew it would sit for months waiting on a new engine as they were so backlogged at the time. He kept the GM for some time after that using it exclusively until he sold it after buying his next vehicle to do a review on. Definitely the filter can tell a story when things are starting to go sideways, but it would be a sickening feeling to cut it open and be faced with an ugly mess like that and be running a magnet through the pleats and the oil on the dirty side of the filter and see all the fines sticking to the magnet.    The dealer may have some ideas based on experience as to where that coolant smell is coming from, I would imagine if they can't find it but its smelling they would put dye in it to they could give it a run cycle and use the black light to see where it pops up, if its a hose connection, water pump, rad or even a head gasket etc.
    • Good looking truck, suspensionmaxx looks like a solid option
    • Thanks for the info, im considering a leveling kit or 4" lift kit.
    • charm.li (website) has the vehicle-specific diagnostic procedure for that code, you can use to find what the cause of it is.
