Just like the Chevy commercial with Howie Long and dumping cinder blocks from a skid steer or dropping a toolbox in the floor.

Yeah, I would think the damage would be less dramatic than the bed sides shearing, but I'm pretty sure a 500 lb blunt object slamming into our steel bed sides would still smash it up pretty good. I'm not volunteering to run that test.

 

All I'm saying is that photo is a ridiculous extreme case of user error. I don't like the idea of an aluminum bed either, but for 90% of pickup owners, its probably fine.

How embarrassing!  That would've never happened with my old '96 F-150 XLT!  TT V6 is another foray into tomfoolery.  A single turbo with an inline or large V6 makes sense in lieu of a V8 with DOD when dealing with CAFE but twins and tiny displacement is no good for the long haul.  I reckon trucks so equipped will not outlast the durability of the ninth generation trucks.  There will be fewer of them on the road in twenty years as a percentage of production.

Yup...totally agree!  I saw 2qty mid 80's square bodies on road the other day.  Wonder why FERD is offering a 2 valve High displacement CAM in block again?  Need not say more....

I agree, for daily light use its not an issue.

The destroyed bed picture makes nothing more than a good day of internet trash talking. At the end of the day, the owner's insurance will have to replace the bed box no matter if it was aluminum, steel or composite. There is no brand that is repairable after being damaged in an accident unless it is very minor panel damage. Actually, the aluminum bed has one advantage in higher scrape value. We are talking one 12 pack of beer for a steel bed and one keg of beer for an aluminum bed at the recycle center. Your insurance deductible is the same for both.

These are the non-rounded figures:

 

2018 short box bed floor length:  69.33in. 

 

2019 short box bed floor length:  69.92in. 

 

2018 standard box bed floor length:  78.87in

 

2019 standard box bed floor length:  79.44in.

 

1/2 an inch on the short and standard box.  I wouldn't call that much change.         

Nice spec summary. The big change is box width on 2019 and depth which = more cargo volume. 

 

Happy with the 6.6 standard bed on my 18 but my new cooler needs to be 1” shorter or my bed a 1” taller to fit under my tonneau. First world problem :-)

Or they could bring back the 8ft option on a half ton with something other than a reg cab.  That would really up the cargo space.

I remember seeing half ton extended cab 8’ GMT400, GMT800, GMT900. 

 

Guessing they pulled them due to slow sales? Or make people spend more moving to 3/4 ton platform.

Probably slow sales. I didn't even know they had that option on the ext cabs for some of those generations. I can't recall seeing those unicorns. Seems like a 2500 6.0 comes out to about the same or less vs a 1500 more than one would think.

Yeah I remember the older square bodies, might have seen some GMT800s.  I remember I tried to build one of the generations and it didn't give me the option of an eight footer.  Oh well I know I'm different and want odd ball things.  Doesn't really matter, I doubt I could go back down to a half ton anyway, too used to the HDs now.

    • Monthly payment is only part of the equation. With today's prices and interest rates, I'd look at the total monthly cost: payment, insurance, registration, fuel, maintenance, and expected repairs. A vehicle that fits comfortably into your budget is usually the better choice than stretching for a higher trim. I've also kept my vehicles longer over the past few years. New cars have gotten expensive enough that driving one for 10+ years, while staying on top of maintenance, often ends up being the most cost-effective approach.

    • Thanks newdude!  By the time manual selection is needed, I'm probably too much of a control-freak to depend on the transmission sensing braking to activate automatic downshifting.  I would be anticipating the situation and already be manually downshifting.   This truck replaced a 2004.5 LLY diesel with the Allison 5-speed.  Putting it in T/H made noticeable differences (when the torque converter locked, upshift points, downshift behavior).  On this 2024 gasser with the 10L1000 I haven't been able to detect much, if any, difference.  Ok, I can never tell now when the torque converter locks up.  But I also don't notice differences in shifting.  For downhills, I've probably already manually downshifted by then anyway.  Since it's also more awkward (than the 2004.5) to engage/disengage I don't even bother.  Or maybe it doesn't really matter with just a 3k lb. camper in the bed?   Thanks also for the list of reasons the charging system might select various voltages.  However, what I am seeing doesn't fall into any of those categories.  It very definitely, and very consistently, rises after coasting/braking.  Maybe not immediately, but not very long after coasting/braking.  Very consistently drops voltage when no longer coasting/braking.  It might also be interacting with the camper battery charging (I might disconnect the camper and see if it changes the charging behavior).  I also need to recheck turning on headlights for when I want to force it to charge the camper.   Another JR, in June I converted the camper to LiFePO4.  Since it's not a good idea to try to charge lithiums directly using truck, I installed a Victron Orion XS DC-DC charger (which BTW is AMAZING!!).  Being cheap, I only had to buy that one item (besides the battery, of course) to do the conversion.  The camper OEM 120v battery charger (only 19 years old and works perfectly) and the truck feed the input to the DC-DC charger (not at the same time).  But I didn't want the camper charger feeding back to the truck so I kept the old separator.  I considered replacing the separator with a 30amp diode but that means more work and might add another 1/2 volt drop.  One thing that surprised me was the voltage drop over the long 10awg wire run, so I can only charge smoothly at 8 amps (because the DC-DC charger is completely configurable).  Another reason I don't want an added voltage drop with the diode.  I might also be a little lazy but all this work is being done under the sink with a small cabinet opening.    
    • apparently CA smog is (or at least was)  checking that the vehicle is using the oem and/or a ca smog approved tune, so I expect you'll fail inspection doing it.
    • yes, leaking exhaust will mess up o2 sensor readings, which in turn messes up fuel trims.
