Hi I'm new here and really didn't find an answer to my question...so I just did an oil change on my 14 Sierra with the 5.3 and added the correct 8.5qts of oil. As I was doing the oil change the level was perfect...but I checked it again the next morning just to be safe and no matter what I did the oil level read pretty high as in where the dipstick starts to twist. I was on level ground and when I did the oil change I ran the engine for 30 seconds to fill the filter and it looked great until I checked it again. Is this something to worry about???

The recommended oil is 8qts.  GM reduced it from 8.5qts. I wouldn't sweat it.  Many trucks were driving around for a long time running 8.5qts in the sump.

You can always drain off some if you want but really it isn't going to hurt anything.

Capacity and Viscosity Charts for 2013, 2014, and 2015 engines:

Info from Oct 2014: (says there is no need to drain the extra 1/2 qt, but that 8 qt is the revised recommendation for 5.3/6.2

Ok that makes me feel better, I just wasn't sure for having that much oil was going to cause any problems like churning the oil to a froth by the crank/pushing oil out of the front or rear seal or causing any other internal damage. I've never ran into this problem before after an oil change its usually right on the money

Wow, thanks for the info. I would have kept doing the 8.5 qts as stated in my owners manual. How would i have learned this is not for you?

Not sure but when GM reduced it they should have sent a letter out to all the vehicle owners that purchased vehicle where the owners manual stated 8.5qts.  Why they didn't I can't say other than cost.

I've got a 2016 chevy Silverado 1500 with a 5.3l V8. Looks like you're doing everything right. I've had no problems with this issue. I always fill my new oil filter with 3/4 full of oil before I screw in on. Johnny01:
